Jamison Battle to enter the Transfer Portal

Is this you after the second or third Jack & Ginger?

The lying is really getting old. Remember Parker Fox? He had either scheduled or was looking to take visits to several schools (Ohio State was one) and then suddenly committed to Minnesota. This was Ben's first (and would be his only) recruiting win in the portal his first year. It was played up and then there were whispers that he was injured. Later, those whispers were confirmed and he had torn his ACL. Now it was spun "Poor Ben, had Parker get hurt late and now he has to turn to Eric Curry, he didn't have time to get anyone else out of the portal". It wasn't until much later (maybe during the season) that it was acknowledged that Parker Fox was hurt BEFORE he committed to Ben Johnson. Now two entire narratives were gone: that Parker Fox was a big recruiting win (they were taking an injured D2 guy that would have to sit the entire year) and that Ben had this horrible luck with bigs in the portal which lead to Eric Curry being his starting 5.

Now we have Jamison Battle. Ben had multiple chances to answer questions in a different way that made it clear Jamison was just moving on from the program and not necessarily going pro. He didn't do that. The optics of Battle, from the same high school as both him and his lead assistant, a mid major kid who they gave all the minutes and shots to is potentially transferring...and for that to come out at the end of a 2-17 season right after a home loss to Wisconsin are about as bad as it could get. If this was known on that night, the calls for Coyle to make a move are deafening. Now it comes it out weeks later during the first day of March Madness...

Remember the "culture" BS from year 1? How these guys who were here 1 year to finish last place in the Big Ten somehow established some sort of foundation?

Yes, optics aren't so great but the piling on is disgusting. He's either going to do significantly better next season or he's a dead man walking right now. I don't see the point of piling on, jeering, and pissing on dead man walking.
Ben was hired to build the program, he has the local contacts, is a good recruiter but inexperienced. If he can't keep anyone what is the building that is going on. Loose the guys you are developing in the portal, get new guys that don't have the potential of the guys you lost in the portal, rinse, and start over. I've supported him to this point but it is time to pile it on. He's making a boatload of money in a job he is not prepared for. Not sure another cycle is going to make any difference.

Cbj apologists are making more rationalizations and excuses. Nothing more.
Battle was gone weeks ago. He doesn't fit playing with Garcia at the 4. Every game further eroded Battle's chances of a pro contract. I give him credit for his intelligence in making a good decision.

Culture. Build.

Still waiting for coach 84 to enlighten us.

And the reason was to make money, didn't want to go to classes anymore. All rubbish.

If mn leadership gives a rats tail about the men's bb program, they move on from this failed staff.

On what date did Fox suffer the first season-ending knee injury? Where was he?

So you wanted the same lineup next year?
No, but I wanted to supplement what we already had with guys with more talent. I didn't want to patch holes with guys who have no business getting a scholarship.

It's like the Cooper situation.
Do I think he was a really good PG? Nope.
Would I have been excited about him being replaced in the starting lineup by someone better? Of course.
How confident am I that our PG situation will be better next season without him? Not confident at all.

I dont see any way Gopher Basketball becomes relevant in the next several years. Johnson will be the coach again next year which will set the program back even further from its dismal low of this past season. I am utterly disgusted with the state of our basketball program.

Blow it up, start over and check back in five years to see where we are.

Fox injured his knee shortly after he committed not before. Unless you are accusing him of lying?

Yup.

He only posts negativity in my experience - can’t recall anything ever with a positive slant.

I don’t know, but it seems like the players may have to take a physical to be cleared and before a school can give them a scholarship worth tens of thousands if dollars - that’s a significant investment by a school.

Maybe Battle can rejuvenate somewhere else like Kalscheur did at Iowa State. Not sure what his deal was this year (regression to the mean?) but his shooting was awful.

This is the first I've heard of Parker Fox being hurt before committing. I thought the story was that he got hurt a couple weeks after committing. If true, that's really bad.

Link? Proof?
Or Spurious allegations?

Everybody knew the team would be bad up until 2027. It’s fine.

What’s the risk of letting Ben go now? Only financial with buyout?
This is not a super desirable job. It’s much harder if we fired the last guy, who was arguably a hometown hero, after two years. Even after three years, it’s still similar.

Pre-portal, I feel like 4 years was the standard and 3 years was the worst case scenario. I don’t know if the standard has changed now post-portal. But if I’m an up and coming coach getting offered $3M by Minnesota, and I hear that Minnesota fired an alum after 2 or 3 years (with no off-court issues), I keep looking or stay at my current job.

This is truly the worst case scenario that Coyle or the powers that be have put us in.
