Treyton Thompson has officially entered the transfer portal

It's hard to say what was going on behind the scenes. Perhaps TT had a different view of what he should be doing on the court than Ben did? Maybe he didn't take instruction too well? I'm not sure but once Evans decommitted I thought that Ben might take a long look at TT and he still buried him.
TT is the last guy he would look at after Evans decomitted. TT is a wing who doesn't shoot well. He has no aptitude and less desire to play post.

That sounds like being run off to me. It happens but I don’t like it. Ben knows more than I do but this looks like blinders to me. In a lost season Treyton should have been given a complete chance to sink or swim. Doesn’t appear he was given that.

Tangentially Damian Johnson tells his story that Tubby believed he was not a college player and wanted him gone. But he was given the chance to prove him and did.
Back ten years ago, you could challenge a player and tell them they weren't ready for this level and the good ones would take the challenge and get better. Today they go to the portal hoping the next coach will let them do as they please.

What? Players have been transferring for over 40 years… Ben Coleman and Leo Rautins for example…

And for the most part- they had to sit out a year to do so, unless a hardship exception was made. Marcus Carr was one.

So players were challenged and transferred over 40 years ago?
What are you getting at here? Make a point. 40 years ago when coach and player didn't work out a player could transfer and sit out. Coaches tended to stay put more as well. I like it that way. If you like it this way- then you are free to do so.

This isn't 40 years ago. The good coaches can challenge their players and keep them. The bad ones can't. How many comparable programs in the B1G are turning over their rosters every year? None of them.

Marcus Carr sure looks like he has embraced a coach not letting him do whatever he wants. The good players still want to be coached. You're just making excuses for Ben, again.

What you like and what the real situation is now.... Are two totally different things... You can live in the past or accept the here and now

Oh it is what it is. I will assume it is safe to say that you never consider other options than what is?

Ben is recruiting for his coaching career. If he does the above, his career is over after this year. In the past, it appears that Ben has recruited half heartedly when he got past 7-8 solid guys, because he was concerned about playing time. My guess is that the days of thinking that way are over. It's all in time for Ben.
I really hope so. I was really annoyed when he basically shut down recruiting early the last couple years. Taurus Samuels, Danny Ogele, Charlie Daniels, and handing Ramberg a scholarship were inexcusable.

Unfortunately I think the answer is being a little bit "slimier". He's going to have to sell some guys on a vision, knowing it won't come true for a few. And be okay with that. Seems like he was reticent in the past to recruit guys for slots 13-15 unless he could promise them playing time.

Maybe over generalizing but I get your point. There are interests in all of this that are not just the interests of the player.

I know that college athletics are no longer what they were... The rules of the game have changed. I don't like what it has become either but I'm not going to sit here and argue over what I wish it was still.. players are now free to do whatever... Coaches are free to do whatever... Players are now being paid out in the open rather than under the table... Time for this university to do the same if it wants to be competitive

Promise nothing. Cast a big vision that can be achieved. There's nothing wrong with telling 13 kids that they all have a chance to be a great player here. The rest is up to the players. To the best goes the playing time- to the rest goes a 4 year degree.

I hope our University pays more than others and gets better players- no doubt about it! And by the way- can we just put our Final Four banners up for heaven's sake? :)

Check out some of the replies to see our lovely fans being dicks to an unpaid, locally grown 20 year old college athlete.

“We love the Minnesota kids! 😍😍😍

I have zero issue with Thompson leaving. And it doesn't hurt us going into next year at all.

I like the kid and he loved the U, but it was never a fit here.

in the end, the coach decides who plays and how much they play.

if the coach fails, he gets fired.

so, unless the coach is nuts or wants to get fired, he is not going to deny playing time to players who - in the coach's opinion - can help the team win.

TT did not play. Ergo, the coach did not think he could help the team win.

Now certainly, the coach could be wrong. but if TT ever sniffs the court on another major conference D1 program, I will be extremely surprised. TT was billed as a big man who could shoot from the perimeter. this season, he made 3 of 25 3-pt FG attempts. that's 12%.

I was reflecting on this new for a day before opening this thread. Most of my thoughts have been covered by others here, but these were the things I was thinking. This situation stinks. Thompson:
-wanted to be a Gopher
-kept his commitment from Pitino to Johnson
-did what was asked of him last year
-I thought when he was an ironman in that short-handed win vs Rutgers last year that maybe Johnson had found a way to use him in that 2-3 zone
-suffered strange usage this year from starting to MIA

None of this sits great with me and now there’s certainly a non-zero chance Ramberg and Purcell both have scholarships next year

TT is certainly a better player than Samuels. And Charlie Daniels. And Danny Ogele. And the shooting guard from last year who's name I can't even remember. So there's a at least a 50/50 shot he'll be replaced by an inferior player.
Well of course.

Who will actually transfer here, at this point?

I guess it's one thing to go buy some billboards in a bunch of major cities saying "Do you want to play in the Big Ten?? Call Ben Johnson!"

But we've already done that ...

So this kid thought he was Dirk Nowitzki??

But Dirk did play defense in the paint, did he not? Aren't you automatically required to, as a 7footer?

I don't get it

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. But, it is certainly much, much greener for Marcus Carr. He is one of the key players on a #2 Texas in the NCAA tourney this year. Way better situation than the lowly Gophers.

This isn't grass this team is sitting in.. it's shit.... And maybe he wants to get away from the putrid, rancid, decaying smell that is now this program

My guess is that the coach is telling Thompson that in order to help this team he has to become a stronger 5 man, rebound, defend and hit the boards and Thompson is thinking differently. Just a guess but Ben doesn't seem like a coach who runs guys off for no reason. If anything he seems far too nice to me.

He appears to me to be the type of leader that avoids all contact which leaves everyone guessing.

He certainly does very little to boost public interest and build confidence in the program, that's a valid point. I do have feeling that he connects well with the players though.

What does that tell you about a 4* rating??

Honest question
Was he a 4*? I don’t remember that score being assigned to him.

I remember wanting Kenny Pohto more than TT.
