Spit Ball Some Transfer Gets Here

Will actually start to see some guys enter here shortly. Seasons coming to an end.

and it begins

Another one who entered in the last few days:

Xander Rice, Bucknell (the school that was smart enough to recruit Roseville's Mike Muscala). He's listed as a point guard and has played 4 years so he'd be a one-year player. He is the son of King Rice who played for Dean Smith at North Carolina in the late 80s and early 90s.

Grant Nelson (NDSU) would be helpful. Had 20 and 22 last night. 6’11. I know we have some bigs but I’ll take him over our other options besides Payne

Dawson Garcia would be putting up just as big of numbers on NDSU as Nelson has

Averaged 14 pts and 3.8 assists this season.

Are we just gonna rename this thread the all things transfer portal now?

I think that would be a good idea. Kind of a waste of time to discuss players before they indicate they're transferring. Otherwise, you might as well call the thread "All things - random eligible college basketball players."

I was going to mention him!...but I haven't looked at his season stats to see whether last night's performance was an outlier. He looks the type that would fit Wisconsin's scheme well: size and skill. Didn't pay too close attention to him on defense.

He was consistently good based on game log. Would help us immediately IMO

Correct. So having another guy who is equal to our best player would help the team. I think your comment just reinforces that we could use him.

well you said you would take him over all our players other than Payne.....so was just giving Garcia some love as he was by far and away our best player this year

but yes a Garcia/Nelson combo would be great....wont happen....but we are spit balling here

He’s not a center though. That would be coaching malpractice

That’s fair. I think he could play with Garcia which is key. He’d be more like Payne, Garcia seems more comfortable around the perimeter.

You’re right though. None of this matters 😂

If that means he would be as good as Garcia here he might help us a little.
He’d be better. He is taller, more mobile, a better dribbler, a better passer, and a better rebounder.

I think Garcia is the gophers best player, I just think Nelson is better.

yeah its not really that big of deal...im not debating who is better....Garcia this year was all big ten honorable mention and Nelson could be at the same level for sure.....

Sort of a tangent here, but the key is obviously to identify the Grant Nelsons...and Geno Crandalls and Nate Wolterses and Ben Woodsides and Andrew Rohdes and...before they go to the Summit League. And make no mistake, those players are identifiable.
Don't we pay someone $2M a season to do this...and then on top of that there is a staff that makes a few hundred grand more....

They may also never be as good as they got without the opportunity to develop or grew like they did by playing in the Summit. Rhode chose to commit early and didn’t let the big schools in when they tried. With the portal, most schools are smart to just let someone else hit or Miss on them and develop them for you. P6 schools don’t get to be young very often.

This is part of the changed nature of the game. It amounts to a farm system but without the team affiliation you have in the pros. You're throwing a small fish back in the ocean and hoping you can catch him again later when he's grown. You could also keep him in an aquarium for a while, but he'd be taking up space in the meantime, and he might not grow as well as he would in the wild.
