Portal/transfers around college volleyball

I am hoping Murr and Shaff's connection isn't all that rusty. If we are more in system, there is no doubt Shaff will have her best season ever. With the new Coaching Staff working really hard I am sure they will have more GREAT NEWS for us come May besides the signing of Murr.
I'm sure her communication with the hitters would be more crucial. Also with the DS.

Nebraska, Wisc, and Texas are nothing but all-star teams. I hope there is something to be done about that.

Time to think about making players sit a year if they transfer.

Neb and Wisc by far and away the biggest home crowds, though I could easily see Texas filling a 10k arena if they build it. Texas likes to have the biggest of everything, even if they aren't the best.

I used to respect Sheffield. I really find it hard to now.
I am glad someone finally stated this becausse I have felt this way FOR SEVERAL YEARS.

What is going to be more interesting is seeing Orzol or Franklin BENCHED for Thomas and Smrek, Crawford or Robinson BENCHED for Booth. Heck I wouldn't doubt if Damrow replaces GG at Libero.

Or if any Badgers transfer out in the next portal window...

One standout about this Minnesota program is the dedication to the whole person athlete. This is their team where they are important and they are the team. They are not expendable to who's in the portal.

Emilia Weske as an add would complete what this team needs. As others have said, maybe a back row player. The team is world-class and growing into even better.

Smrek is already a starter and isn't going anywhere.

Can't see Franklin being benched. She was a huge transfer for them, and probably one of their best players.

That was why I asked @sptimes if he knew if Franklin was a situation where MSU had to dump players for covid, as I'm assuming he is assuming TTA was such a situation.

But probably not, as she would appear to have two full seasons left.

I assume Franklin - and Gros! - used MSU's coach leaving as nothing more than a convenient excuse to transfer to a more competitive team.

Hmm ... where have we seen that recently?!

Let me put it this way. There are 8 players adding Wrobel to the mix that would be starters in many programs, but only room for 4 of them (OH-MB-RS) to START and/or Play. That is what is disheartening about programs like Wisconsin with a HC like Sheffield.

Recruiting players and developing them for 1-2 years by redshirting them is an entirely different story. Or bringing in a 5th Year Grad (Like Murr) when it appears you have nobody on your roster that can start in the attended position. This is Minnesota Volleyball and it will continue with KCook.

Do people really believe that Rettke was DEVELOPED at Wisconsin? I would take 10 PITTMAN'S above her at that time anyday.

Jess Robinson transferred to Duke, so she can come off our list as potential middles. I don't think there are any quality middles left right now so we wait until May...

Wisconsin volleyball added a terminal outside hitter Tuesday when Temi Thomas-Ailara announced that she will join the Badgers as a graduate transfer from Northwestern.

The 6-foot-2 Thomas-Ailara, a three-time first-team All-Big Ten Conference and second-team All-American selection, led the Big Ten in total kills (502) and was second in kills per set (4.33) and hit a career best .252 in 2022. She led the way in conference matches with 338 kills and 4.63 kills per set.

NCAA: Biggest Impact Transfers thus far.

Kylie Murr: Ohio State to Minnesota (libero)

Another highly anticipated transfer announcement came late January — OSU's decorated libero is heading to Minnesota. The Gophers have seen quite a bit of change this offseason with head coach Hugh McCutcheon stepping down, Jenna Weenaas transferring to Texas, and the loss of their star libero to graduation, CC McGraw. New head coach Keegan Cook found the perfect answer with the transfer of Murr. Murr was known as one of the best liberos in the Big Ten last season, if not the entire NCAA. She averaged 4.69 digs per set at Ohio State in 2022.

A mish-mash of Big Ten transfer portal and NIL news.

Wisconsin was both a big winner and loser for transfers

Penn State won the transfer transfer portal

Of course, Minnesota achieved a huge transfer portal pickup:

Very happy we picked up another middle. However, there are lots of questions before the season begins.

1 - Will Phoebe Awoleye be able to play this fall with NCAA transfer regulations in play.
2 - If Phoebe can play, will there be enough time for her and Shaff to try and connect. There is about a three week window in August for her and Shaff to start developing that connection, before the 2023 VB season begins.
3 - I read in the VT thread that Awoleye would be so much better but has struggled connecting with her team's setters. Unfortuantely, I don't see that trend changing right away here at Minnesota.

I feel Shaff's game really needs to go to the next level and I hope this NEW COACHING STAFF has a plan on how that is going to improve. IMO they need to surround her with an experienced high flying Opp and a very established DS to complete this plan.
