Jeff Goodman on Pitino and Miles: Each had a really tough gig in BT, and now look at each spot. Those guys did as much as they could at those spots.

Piekell did it. Bo Ryan did it. It takes a great coach.

I’d also add that every coach that has left MN the last 30 years has won more at their next job. (Clem is the outlier, but that was a little different circumstances).
Total wins, sure, not winning percentage.
Monson was 118-106 here and at Long Beach 245-252
Smith was 124-81 here and after 131-144
Pitino however is doing better. 141-123 here and 30-21 since leaving. Better win percentage.

I think you’re flip flopping him and lynch

Wasn’t mbakwe a DUI?

Mbakwe was accused of felony assault charge, I don’t think he was convicted? And was it sexual in nature?

It’s kind of interesting to know he is a high school basketball coach now with that record.
Yeah, you're right.

The final charges were physical assault. The allegation was that he punched a woman in an attempt to sexually assault her. Her ended up pleading no contest resulting in a conviction.

He then was arrested for violating a no-contact order against another woman - violating his probation. He then was arrested for DUI - violating his probation. None of these things ended his career at the U, his career ended when he blew out his ACL.

The entire reason that I bring this up is to say that with Mbakwe, the U was extremely flexible with him.

As far as Lynch, yeah, he had many sexual assault allegations.

Pitino won the game. They are 17 and 2. The all access added more pieces to my thoughts that
Richard can coach the game. He is going to have the same problem at New Mexico as Minnesota...his style relies on individual talent versus a system. So when somebody gets hurt or suspended the team collapses.

New Mexico was in the Top 25. Couple losses and presently on the edge. He did the same thing at Minnesota but it always got derailed with missing pieces.

Hopefully, they stay healthy and he has a great year. He does have a third guard he is developing...maybe he is learning.

I wonder how pitino would have done at minnesota if he had started at New Mexico and then came here. After 8 years, you have to move on, but I don’t think he’s a terrible coach. Wonder if a bit more experience before starting could have kept him from making some of the big mistakes.

Fair point. I should said were successful. Tubby turning around Texas Tech at that time was highly thought of and turned that into a decent job at Memphis. Monson won quite a bit in his 6 years at Long Beach. His bad record has really came from the last 7 years. Its hard to win here

Happy to see Pitino doing well in ABQ. Might have to make a trip again to see a game in The Pit if I can find a good home game on the schedule that works from a travel standpoint.

It's truly one of the better places in the country to watch a college hoops game when the Lobos are playing good basketball.

Tubby turned Memphis into a decent job...pretty sure John Calipari turned that into a decent job. Granted he brought sanctions, but the success put the program back on the map and they have stay on the map...even if their Derrick Rose national title didn't happen.

Just reading the blurb that was pasted, but if I'm following, two coaches who were overmatched in the Big Ten are doing better in a much weaker Mountain West, and the author's conclusion is that somehow that proves you can't win at Nerbaska or Minnesota?
Goodman is largely a joke. He's also the one who posted that coaches were upset coming to Mpls for Big Ten start of the year kickoff for hoops. He has it in his head that Mpls/St. Paul is some small outpost, not one of the biggest metro areas in the country - bigger than any other markets in the Big Ten except Rutgers in NYC area and Northwestern in Chicago. All it would take for Goodman to change his mind about MN or NE is to have a coach he likes win for a year.

I meant that Tubby turned his TT success into a decent job with Memphis. I never said he made it a good job. Pastner did fine at Memphis and kept that a decent job after Cal left.

Exactly. As much as I like Pitino and wish him well, he does not have a history of finishing strong. My guess is the year won't end as good for him as it has started. It's kind of simple really. We haven't made a good hire since Clem. Once we find that coach though, basketball turns easier than football. Yet, it will take time to change the narrative.

People forget because it's been a long time now, but this program had a long run of being pretty successful with a lot of talent going to the NBA through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I still remember listening to Dick Vitale talking about the job being a top 15 program when Clem left. However, I don't think anyone knew how deep the recruiting sanctions were with such limited on-campus visits, etc. The sanctions absolutely killed the program, and we have never brought in the right coach since. Hope Ben is it. If not, we'll try again.

The sanctions also opened the door to programs like Wisconsin and Michigan State to raid the local talent. Once they began making inroads with local coaches and talent they never left.

Yep. In addition, we used to have a great base in Michigan with a lot of talent coming from there. Work to do, and hopefully Ben can make progress with it. Also, recruiting has changed so much in 20 years. Now, no matter where a kid goes their parents can still watch every game online/TV, and facetime with them all the time. It's not a real big deal to be away. 20 years ago if you wanted to see your kid play, they largely had to stay local other than a few nationally televised games. That made a big difference to kids I know who were getting recruited nationally - it was a big deal in the 90s to leave MN because your parents were not going to be able to see you play hardly at all.

None of these things ended his career at the U, his career ended when he blew out his ACL.

Trevor came back after the knee injury for a senior season (2012-13) that saw him make 2nd team all-Big Ten after leading the Big Ten in rebounding for a 2nd time in his career. He helped the Gophers to their first NCAA tourney win since 1997.

If COVID didn't end the season a few years ago, he would've taken Rutgers to the NCAA tournament three years in a row. That's impressive, given that Rutgers has been one of the worst P6 teams during my lifetime.

Debatable. Tubby had one good year at Texas Tech, two bad years and then two bad years at Memphis. Monson been at Long Beach and hasn't sniffed another High Major job

They would have three if not for the pandemic and considering the joke of a program Rutgers was I would say he's done a great job

It's junk science. People like Goodman would prefer that programs like Nebraska and Minnesota are wastelands because that means more wins and more attention for the other programs he likes better. That's the narrative here. There's no reason that any program in any city can't become successful with the right leadership.

Tech was in really bad shape. His turnaround there was pretty darn good
and then two bad years at Memphis.
. He won 20 and 19 games and was on the bubble. Got dumped because Penny blackballed him.
Monson been at Long Beach and hasn't sniffed another High Major job
Monson has said in interviews he basically refused interviews. The MN experience soured him and he wanted a stable place for his kids to grow up and be on the west coast. He could’ve job hopped during his high time at Long Beach State.

Like I said earlier, winning was the wrong term, but they took jobs and improved them and had success.

So Monson doesn’t accep t blame for his time here? Ridiculous - his final games were almost theft - payment for services not rendered.

Totally agree with you. It takes building relationships, a coach with an honest and appealing personality , and good coaching.

You are correct. The sanctions from the academic scandal were a death knell for the program that they have not yet recovered from. That left an entire generation of high school kids seeing a team that was usually mediocre, with an occasional year where they did well. So they didn’t experience Williams Arena at its most electric, and they decided to go elsewhere, often the the Sconnies.
