Bucky Irving with a very impressive TD run against North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl.

Followed by a long story about he didn’t like the “Bucky to Bucko” nickname migration here. But that wasn’t the reason he transferred. He “wanted a place he could compete.”

What does that mean?

It's probably his belief he has a better chance at competing for conference and national championships at Oregon.

He'll always be Bucko to me.

I'm not sure Irving gets that many additional carries at Oregon.

He got about as many carries as Bryce Williams and Trey Potts combined. I think he takes up the vast majority of those touches and probably eats into Mo's carries a bit more.

Then, of course, he would get 200+ carries here next season.

He left for $$ and a bigger spotlight. That is okay.

He’s dead to me. Our running back room is looking very nice for next year. I am excited to see who the top running backs will be.
 

We knew he was good while here and when he left.

At least that's a sign of 'crutin success that unfortunately did not translate long term on the field.

Recall the the covid season is embedded in everything now going back to when players like Mo and Tanner started. It's a factor that hopefully will never be seen again.

As for NIL or better success, Bucky is the epitome of the promise of the Portal. Sucks for us but good for him and Oregon.
 




This article here quotes the following reasons.

He wasn't thrilled with the offense he was playing in though. He felt his versatility was wasted in the Minnesota scheme and believes he's found one that will showcase his skillset better.

Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham intends to get creative with his running backs, Irving says. Backs might line up in the backfield one play, then in the slot the next and possibly flexed out wide a few plays later.

Being utilized in such an offense excited Irving, who sees himself as a great pass catcher, but made just eight catches last season.

But it's clear he also was not happy with the nickname issue.

Irving cleared the air. His preference is to be referred to as Bucky. It's a moniker his late father gave him and it carries great sentimental value. Bucko belongs in the past, he explained. Minnesota coaches forced that one upon him as they weren't thrilled with referring to their up-and-coming running back by the same name as rival mascot Bucky the Badger.

No, I remember PJ’s stupid “we can’t call him Bucky because of the Badgers” and saying they’ll call him Bucko. What I’m asking is did anyone actually ever call him Bucko. I always heard him referred to as Bucky 🤷‍♂️

When I was at the U, if anyone had changed my nickname I would have run for the hills.

Who needs that crap.

Truth be told, I didn't have a nickname. But, boy, if I had actually had one, and someone had tried to change it, heck, I'd be gone like the wayward wind.

If he left because he didn't like his nickname, I'm glad he left.
 


This UNC team looks like they are going to be a tough out for the Gophers next year.

He’s a home run threat and Mo isn’t. Our offense needed that. You can easily try to dismiss him, but he would have been our 2nd best back this year and our starter next year. It was a big loss.

He was our biggest loss from the portal and IMO it is not even close.

He would probably be the star of our team next year.

And if they were smart he and Mo could have been on the field at the same time quite a bit. With CAB going down he could have easily gotten 40-50 touches in the passing game.
