I see rivalries a bit differently. I see it as the Gopher program's job to make sure it can hold its own in the rivalries with Iowa and Wisconsin. This isn't new ground. Did the Michigan/OSU rivalry create BETTER teams? I think so. Keeping up with the Jones' has a way of raising BOTH programs. The better Michigan got, the more pressure it put in OSU, and vice versa. One day everyone noticed people were referring to the conference as the big 2 and the little 8. Are those instate recruits going to Iowa and Wisconsin because they are GOOD, or because the Gophers are NOT good? Probably a bit of each.
Using your logic, we should be placing our hopes on Iowa and Wisconsin sucking so the Gophers can compete with them. I see it the other way around.
Does it create more urgency, and desire in your program if your closest rivals are bad? Now, IN CONFERENCE games... that is another story.
If Iowa and Wisconsin suck, and by extension the rest of the conference... we will just be losing those recruits to other schools. I think it is very short sighted to think that top talent will choose the Gophers because their rivals suck as bad as they do. The better the national image is for the Big 10, the better it will be for all its member institutions.
Again, sorry to hear that you hate me... but cheering for our conference brothers when they are playing non-con or bowl games is in my DNA. Always will be.
