Ben Johnson is a Disaster

There were many in the offseason talking about the Gophers making a run toward the Tournament, and now there's an extended discussion about whether or not the Gophers can win a single Big Ten game.
There were many delusional fans in the off-season.

I'll give Johnson some credit in that, at least he knew we were going to be terrible, so he loaded up on 250+ teams. To bad we can't play ourselves, that might be another win!

If things don't work out with Ben, maybe we can hire that Pitinio guy out at New Mexico. He seems to have a pretty decent season happening. 😎

Uggghhh.

And we wonder why we have the reputation of being cursed...

Wow, you guys got this up to 18 pages already?! Could someone give me a short summary? Are we looking to fire Johnson already?

Well one Badger-seeming-fan on here turned-out to be a Michigan State fan. But at least he was finally called (at least one time finally) on his non-stop trashing & ridiculing of the Gophers.

Yes, real Gopher fans have the mentality of children too. They'd have thrown (or did throw) the same tantrums every game during Clem's rebuild too. But yes, there are Badger fans on here posing as Gopher fans...there's no question about that...despite the denials.

Perhaps true but throwing the Badger fan subversive as the first dagger in the fight is over the top.

I think most Badger fans are perfectly OK with Ben Johnson being the Gopher coach. That's not a dig at Ben and it doesn't mean anything, but I don't think Badger fans want Ben canned.

Many posts are ridiculing Ben & the Goohers. Mocking them.

Saying stuff like right above your post - that Ben is "busy game planning for that savvy Chicago State squad"...that "Hopefully by 2027 we are still giving the freshman quality minutes. And steadily improving on our high five and butt slap metrics." Etc., etc...

You didn't take a dig at Ben in your post I quoted. But many on here do it non-stop.

How much of the probability model is subjective data? The "odds" of winning any given game with 100's of variables do not exactly equate to the 1/36 chance of getting snake eyes, which is an exact mathematical equation, with only six variables per die. Modeling isn't exactly the same, especially in something as subjective as games played by teenagers and young adults, who can also be quite unpredictable. My suggestion is that it is impossible to suggest an exact probability in basketball like you can with dice and cards.

For fun, I wonder what probability models might have given to Villanova to beat Georgetown in what is likely the biggest upset in NCAA championship history.
Yes. The question of course is the assumption of the underlying probabilities which are much more subjective than the analogy to dice and cards, which are fixed and known. My own editorial position is that people are tempted to equate the probability certitude of snake eyes to things like winning games. Modeling has a subjectivity to it that typically isn't addressed in a 300 level stats or QA class, or I suspect on a public message board. Subjectivity notwithstanding, it will be a disaster if the Gophers go winless in the B1G.
Yes, you have to take into account the statistical variability. An expected point spread can be converted to a percent chance of victory if you know the standard deviation. Of course, the best data about standard deviation would be aggregated over the statistical set, which itself has variability (i.e. some teams being more consistent than others). One way or another, any estimate is a snapshot in time, based on the current relative strengths of each team...which change and drift throughout the season.

And you are hiding who your favorite team is oh antigopher.
The only sports team I follow and support is the Minnesota Golden Gopher Men's Basketball team. Weird that is like a gotchya moment on this board, but you really got me now.
