And most explosive plays come from passing. With a great running game and Mo imagine the explosive plays we could open up. Its not rocket science. Even Iowa tried just enough of them to win.

Throwing deep with an OL struggling to pass protect and a young QB who hasn't shown amazing accuracy is just asking for a sack / or INT vs that Iowa defense.

Didn't PJ have some game winning formula that included explosive plays? I thought it was something like if you do x,y, and z you will win 67% of the games. And explosive play margin was one of the factors. Seems to me like he understands the current team is not capable of winning the explosive play margin, and therefore has eliminated that variable from the equation.

Hopefully we go to the portal and find offensive linemen, better than what we signed last year. There was a reason why Mich. and ND encouraged both to leave. Should have seen the hand writing on the wall.

Has Fiagala been bad? I don’t notice him a lot. Seems like he was a solid pickup.

And Carroll starts. So he was a better option than whatever else we have.

Adding two starting OL has benefitted is.

This lack of even attempting passes is something I truly do not understand. The Michigan State game was a great example of very good balanced offense and then it disappeared for most of the rest of the year. Here's the 1st half drives against MSU.

5 run, 5 pass = TD
5 run, 5 pass = TD
3 run, 8 pass = FG
2 run, 1 pass = fumble
5 run, 3 pass = time expired (half)

The Gophs then went heavier run in the MSU second half to bleed the clock, but still passed.

I get that the Gophs tried to pass against Purdue and it didn't go as well (Purdue didn't need to account for Mo), but that game should still have been won if not for some weird breaks.

In the PSU game, the coaching staff tried to protect AK by going almost pure run the first several drives, but that totally backfired. PSU got a nice lead then pinned their ears back with pass rush in obvious passing situations.

The only TD against Iowa came in the first half when the Gophs allowed AK to mix it up with the pass.

To totally abandon the passing game since Penn State is just weird. Call me frustrated.

It’s frustrating.
There are three very important variables from the Michigan state game that weren’t available against Iowa.

1) a really bad defense to play against
2) no tape on what the gophers would try to do post Crab injury
3) Tanner Morgan

I do find it frustrating that Iowa 3 of the last 4 years draws up big plays in the first half. We adjust and shut it down. I’m not mad at the D. KC has had no wrinkles in the games we lose, at least no wrinkles that work

Yeah, I remember after the Purdue and Illinois games when everyone was like "where the hell did the passing game go???" and Fleck was just like "yeah you know, the receivers just need to play like they did against MSU!"

OK, sure, there is the CrAB factor.

One guy (other than the QB) makes or breaks the entire passing game?? Damn. That's tough

You could add a 4 to your list - Good Weather

on Gopher Gridiron Podcast this week, Ryan Burns had this set of stats:

in the 2nd half of the games against Purdue, Illinois and Iowa, the Gopher QB's collectively did this:

40% completion; 3.9 yards per attempt; 0 TD and 4 INT.

Now, you can argue both sides: is the passing game ineffective because the players can't execute the offense, or is the passing game ineffective because of lack of practice and lack of emphasis on the passing game by the coaches?

but either way, for three key conference games, when the games were on the line, the Gophers got nothing from the passing game.

Oh - 1 more stat:
PJ Fleck has coached 6 games vs Iowa. In those 6 games, the collective score after the 1st quarter was Iowa 54, MN 10. It's hard to win games coming from behind if you can't produce some big plays on offense.

Good stats. Just going by memory, I'd say:

Purdue - the second half was players not making plays
Illinois - Dropped passes. Bad blocking. Morgan hurt. New QB AK being forced to play from behind against a good D.
Iowa - on the coaching staff. AK passed well in the first half, then coaches abandoned the pass in the second half except when behind the sticks which is not a recipe for success with a young QB against a very good D.

Yeah, if people think second half offense was the biggest issue in the game they missed the first quarter defense and offense

Deep passes is not how to beat Iowa. They play a zone and get home with their front 4. Running was the way to beat them and it was there for the taking.

Yep he’s better than anyone we have that’s for sure.
Not even close. He is better than Crab who we didn’t have

Also would’ve been easier to play them without laporta and Dejean

Remember we were down 10 to this Nebraska team at half. They play hard

I don’t disagree. My original comment was on how a poster said you don’t beat Iowa throwing deep. Nebraska is doing that fairly well so far.
I feel that throwing deep to MBS is different
way different

The problems we have this year are roster/health/recruiting in my mind. Not the field

Some questionable things here and there but that’s true for every team every week

Yeah I wasn’t comparing MN to Nebraska only saying they’re having a field day throwing downfield on Iowa, which Maxyjr said you. Any do on them. I’d take Nebraskas WRs over ours any day

Also I would rather play against Iowa’s backup rather than their all American safety

There’s no way you’re a real poster. You post immediately after every new thread starts and always defend the staff no matter what. Are you PJ’s director of communications?

Yeah that’s likely…. a bot for a backwater fan forum.
