Kadyn Betts to officially redshirt 2022-23 season

No it wasn't. Thompson was a 4* recruit and had offers from Michigan, Baylor, and a bunch of other power 6 schools in addition to Indiana where he ended up.

Betts had received only one other offer this year and that was from Nebraska which is his best offer besides the Gophers. He's not close to the same level.
Race was in the 80-120 ranking spot which is where Betts was going to be in 2023. Betts was a little more late on the scene. Not as many prep players are getting offers as when Race was in school due to the portal. More than fair to say that Betts isn’t more acclaimed, but same or similar isn’t far fetched.

First, Betts comes in much more highly regarded than Race Thompson. The plan the whole time was to give him a chance to prove himself this summer and fall or redshirt. He was fully aware of this.

Johnson and the program wanted to lock Betts up as there other programs sniffing around. Betts got the benefit of locking in his schollie this summer instead of an injury potentially putting it in doubt. Betts will have an opportunity to hit the ground running next year after a full year of B1G level training, conditioning, and meals. Betts gets to focus more on academics to ensure that he is where he wants to be in that arena.

He was going to receive a schollie for 4 years anyway. Johnson had an extra schollie for this year so he gave this to the young man. This doesn't extend the risk to the program another year. It simply uses what would have been an unused schollie for this season.
Ahh yah no that isnt true ha. Race was a fairly high 4*, ended 134th in the country his year, had IU, MN, Baylor, Creighton etc offers. Betts was a 4* on some sites yes, consensus high 3* 233rd in the country with offers from MN, CSU, Neb.

I have no problem with disagreeing with my stance, but your statement is just incorrect so.

Why would he care about that? The only people who follow the team close enough to care would understand that was the likely scenario if he wasn't playing. If there are injuries, the same group of people will be the only ones asking him to pull the redshirt.

The casual fan won't know or give a crap.
The media might.

Otherwise no clue.

134 is a very low 4 star and a 3 star in most years. The offers thing isn’t a great measurement because of the portal anymore. Totally agree on Betts not being more highly regarded, but they are closer than many assume. Betts rankings went up by people who actually watch him play and were on par with Race. Very similar.

I'd like this move a lot better if we weren't dealing with so many injuries. This leaves us with only 8 healthy scholarship players until Carrington/Battle are upgraded. Praying for this team's health right now : )
You can always pull the redshirt and play him if that becomes necessary later. Announcing now he is red shirting is just sharing the plan with fans. It is subject to change.

When did programs begin sharing information like this with fans?

Read my post again. I am not talking about rankings. I said that the buzz surrounding Betts was much higher than Thompson. The rankings did not necessarily follow the buzz because he committed so quickly when the MN offer came in. Betts reclassifying to this year also led to his ranking not rising.

I am fairly plugged in to the high school recruiting scene. Betts was getting a lot more attention than Thompson was during their respective rising senior summers. A lot of this may be because Betts kinda came out of nowhere and really opened up some eyes. Thompson did nothing to hurt his stock in 2017 but didn't improve his stock either.

Programs can do whatever they like. Ben chose to announce his plan now to eliminate wondering by media and fans as to why he is not playing.

Barley anyone even knew who Betts was prior to committing here. Thompson was known for years and getting attention from Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, and a long list of others. Betts was getting attention from Nebraska and the Gophers.

Race Thompson was named after a character from the "Jonny Quest" cartoon series.

that makes him cooler in my book.

as to which player was a better prospect coming out of HS, who cares?

Thompson did not go to MN. Betts is going to MN. Now it's up to the MN Coaches to help Betts develop into a quality player - for MN.

Yeah, it’s weird that people in Minnesota were familiar with a local player who is the son of a Gopher legend, and we’re less familiar with a player with a similar rank from 700 miles away.

Anyone know if Betts is younger than most freshman since he reclassified?

Don’t bet against Betts

I was about say Virginia and Villanova were starting to sniff around when Betts committed in July, think he would have had a pretty good offer list and alot of options if he had dragged it out into the Fall, kudos Ben and Jenkins for closing the deal early. Treyton Thompson was highly regarded when he was younger, he just didn't get any better when he went off to prep school and was so so his last AAU summer in 2020.Race Thompson had an injury and was kinda out of shape in high school. He Red shirted to essentially get treatment from a D1 program's doctor's and Athletic Trainers. At IU, he's done a great job of transformating his body, he put in the work and is benefiting from it now.

Probably depends on how 'hard core of a fan one is. Most fans don't know who anyone is until they're here and playing. The hardos who follow sites like 247, On3, Rivals, Prep Hoops etc, different story. Ryan James was driving the Betts hype train for about a year before he committed on all of his platforms

haven't seen a birthday, but probably
3.9 GPA, said after his junior year he was one credit shy of graduating and had to take summer school to graduate early

played tennis and basketball. maybe someday another mardy fish?
or not. that form looks more like my tennis game

A year of hype? Hard to believe there was a year of hype with functionally no mention of it on this board. I think hardly any of us, even hard core fans, knew who he was until right before the commitment.
