All Things 2023 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

I hope Evans commits to UMN but I am tired of the “ I will be announcing my commitment on (date and time) on (media outlet).“ Everything is about self marketing these days. It’s too braggadocio for my tastes. Just make a decision and inform the coaches. Of course everyone does it these days.

I agree with your assessment generally, but I don't think the social media fed ego thing is an issue with this guy. I don't follow social media, but those who do say he is invisible, and doesn't seem to be an attention grabber. If he were, Kansas would have been a finalist, and he would be shopping himself around a lot more than he has. I would even guess that he will let the coaches know before he announces publicly.

Like it or not, that is the way the world works.

Nothing is real until it's posted on social media.

In one sense, it's the most efficient way to do it. a kid that age is not going to issue a press release or hold a formal news conference. so the easiest way to tell the most people at once is a social media post.

could be worse. he could be announcing it live on KARE-11 with Randy Shaver........

On the topic of how kids announce, again its 2022 and its a HUGE day for a kid. Its like the winter situation with WI where people say "Ohh how could he I NEVER would" yah because none of us know what that is like. Imagine being that good and thinking you could very well make millions on dollars playing sports, you've been the biggest deal on your team/school for your whole life. Say what you want, 99% of people would do the exact same thing. Its a big moment for a kid, let them do what they want.

Back to '23, to me if we don't land Evans i would pretty well shut down HS recruiting for this year, at this point we likely arent going to land a game changer, save that scholarship for a transfer, you never know who that might be at this point. Give me an impact transfer over filling the spot with a ho hum HS kid.

Evans has likely already made his choice and let both coaches know. They're letting him have his moment next Monday. His HS coach made it very clear a few weeks ago MN was a favorite, and I think the official solidified that.

I hope you are right. The kid seems like a straight shooter, no pun intended.

There are a lot of things that 'everyone would do' if put in that situation. That doesn't mean that it's good and that we have to like it.

Gosh, I’m thinking what time Monday on Twitter?!!

Additionally these kids have grown up on it and that is how they communicate.

We only want Minnesota kids, what the hell, why are we recruiting out of state stars to play hoops for us?? Welcome Dennis, may you become a fabulous basketball player and individual at this fine university!

What is next for 2023 class? Waiting for spring to see who transfers out and who may be available? Not seeing any other individual player threads for 2023.

Individual player threads often only go to in-state recruits, and I don't think there's any of those left. Fall recruiting is done now. Any future additions will probably be transfers in the spring.

I'm guessing recruiting is shut down for '23 at this point. If someone unexpected leaves after the season, then they'll look at transfers.

Is there an all things class of 2024 recruiting thread? Do we have schollies available for 2024?

Funny thing is I think he’s a better basketball prospect than a football prospect. He’s got really good court vision…..wonder if he will try to play both???

I'm happy to have another "Shik" on campus in maroon and gold, but the kid didn't even get a scholarship offer from MN for either sport. So before we get excited about him playing both sports, let's hope he can earn a scholarship for one of the two first.

Go Shik!!

Assuming nobody transfers, are we all out of '23 scholarships now?

His scholarship is year to year. No guarantee he gets one next year
Exactly, walkon's have no guarantee, the others are guaranteed four years of eligible college scholarship years.
