Buckeyes Wire first out of the gate:

3. Minnesota

Why the Ranking?

It’s time to give Minnesota its due. Many had a wait-and-see approach with the dominating fashion the Gophers had early on with a rather easy schedule, but after a dominating win against Michigan State, it’s time to take notice. I’m not feeling Minnesota about the Gophers being on the same level as Ohio State and Michigan, but they look like the best team in the West right now … by far.

Go Gophers!!

Wolverines Wire chimes in:

2. Minnesota

Besides our new No. 1 team, there was no team more impressive in Big Ten play than Minnesota, which went into East Lansing and embarrassed Michigan State. In the 34-7 drubbing, the Gophers only let up a touchdown near the game’s end with their backups in. Tanner Morgan was nearly perfect, going 23-for-26 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Mo Ibrahim topped 100 yards, leading Minnesota rushers, who amassed 240 total yards on the ground.

On the other side of the ball, the MSU offense managed little, with Noah Kim’s 70 yard drive coming in garbage time. Payton Thorne only managed 132 yards passing on the starting defense, while the Spartans could only get 38 yards rushing vs. Minnesota’s stout front.

Considering Minnesota’s schedule, there’s a strong possibility that the Gophers go undefeated in the regular season. Purdue is up next, then Illinois. The big question mark of a game comes when they travel to Penn State the week after the Nittany Lions play Michigan.

Nittany Lions Wire chimes in:

4. Minnesota

Last game: Won at Michigan State, 34-7

Last Week: 4

Sometimes you never really know how good a team is based on a weak nonconference schedule. So consider this a bit of a statement by Minnesota. It’s one thing to win at Michigan State, but the Gophers flexed on the Spartans all game long and racked up over 500 yards of offense while pounding Michigan State on defense with three turnovers forced.

Minnesota has now outscored its first four opponents 183-24.

Next game: vs. Purdue

4) Minnesota (4-0) — Last week: 4

The Gophers should get their respect in the rankings this week after a dominant 34-7 win over Michigan State. Tanner Morgan(268 yards, 3 TDs) is clicking again in his second stint with offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, and Mo Ibrahim (103 yards, 1 TD) and Trey Potts (72 yards) are all the way back, forming one of the nation’s top running back duos. Joe Rossi also has worked wonders with this defense, which limited Michigan State to just 38 rushing yards. The Gophers are the Big Ten West favorite and the most balanced team in the division.

Next: at Minnesota, 11 a.m. Saturday

Go Gophers!!

I thought the OSU was not a dink until I read the michigan ranking. Neither are dinks.
State Pen gave the West the worst 6 teams except The U.

Also about Michigan State:

"There may be no other way to say it, but Michigan State got absolutely punked at home in East Lansing. A week after losing at Washington, the Spartans were run over by the Gophers and outgained 508-240. This was total domination from the jump and the Spartans had no answers all game long."

Spartans Wire chimes in:

Record: 4-0 (1-0 in Big Ten)

This week’s result: Win at Michigan State

Next game: vs. Purdue (Oct. 1)

The Golden Gophers had their first true test of the season and they passed in flying colors. Minnesota completely dominated the Spartans on the road on Saturday and is the clear-cut favorite in the Big Ten West Division for now.

Outside of the Gophers at #4....this guy has every other West team behind EVERY East team. Forget about the fact that Iowa just beat Rutgers by 17 points.....this guy has Rutgers ranked #7!

lol.....ban this man from the internet.

Last Week’s Spot: #3

Enter Mo Ibrahim in the Heisman conversation. He extends his streak of 100-plus rushing yards to 13 games and breaks Minnesota’s all-time rushing touchdown record with his 41st touchdown. What happened when Minnesota finally played someone? They dominated their fourth straight game.

Next Up: Purdue.

I think the Wolverine writer is sandbagging it's own team a bit, but it's one of the very few with a high Illinois rating. The Ilini might be the second best in the West right now. This week's Illini/Fadger game will be big.

4. Minnesota (4-0)

Last Week: at Michigan State, W 34-7

For three weeks, we’ve been wondering about the validity of the Gophers. Well, in Week 4 Minnesota put some of those questions to bed. PJ Fleck’s squad went on the road and piled up over 500 yards of offense and produced 3 takeaways. Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but Mohamed Ibrahim had 100 yards on the ground and Tanner Morgan was efficient throwing the ball. It’s a winning combination for the Gophers.

Up next: vs. Purdue

Think about this: the Wolverine's Wire just ranked Minnesota No. 2 and the Wolverine's No. 3. My mind can hardly comprehend this. Of course, in the media, Michigan is still ranked top five by coaches and the AP. And the Gophers have just managed to dent the 20s. But closer observers in the B1G are starting to notice what we already know: that this is a balanced and deep Gopher team with good coaching on both sides of the ball. Don't suddenly get too full of yourselves, Gophers! Pride goeth before the fall. Just keep rowing!

4. Minnesota
Other than Ohio State, Minnesota had the league’s most impressive win, dumping Michigan State 34-7 on the road. It was nearly a shutout, too, with the Spartans only tacking on a score with 17 seconds remaining. Golden Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan was near-perfect at 23-of-26 passing for 268 yards with three touchdowns. Minnesota hosts Purdue in Week 5.
