1. Boye Mafe — The sixth-rated in-state recruit in the 2017 class developed into a menacing edge pass rusher at the U and was selected 40th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2022 NFL draft. In his first month on the job, Fleck went into Hopkins High School and won this recruiting battle over former U coach Jerry Kill, who was then Rutgers’ offensive coordinator.

Go Gophers!!

I was pretty shocked to go through the list. I thought it would be a more impressive list.
Good thing we recruit all over the country..

We couldn't have recruited him out of Independence? Or he blew up too big there and was out of our reach?
Looks like he was rated a 2 star out of high school. Fleck offered him out of C.C. but yeah, he blew up at that point and had a bunch of major offers. Might have had a better chance to build a relationship, but Fleck didn't really have time while he was in high school.

I think he started school at St. Thomas?

Yeah, he blew up huge out of Independence. I think he was the #1 JuCo player in the country.

Coming out of HS, he supposedly had terrible grades. It wasn't close, it was why recruiting just fell off. Supposedly major maturity concerns in general. So I can't really blame Fleck for not making a strong connection with him out of HS.

That said, good on Jermaine Johnson for turning it around.

Not sure you can count Jalen Suggs as a "miss." Nobody got him, at least for football.
Same way Mayer was a miss
Bad career choice for both - guaranteed money in a sport where you have longer career are injured less

Bolded: ah, yeah, that would do it!
