Brock Annexstad in the Portal

I have no issue with fair catches, but letting a ball hit the ground and losing 20-30 yards is a different story. No coach in their right mind is telling guys not to catch punts.
So after he let the majority of the punts drop in front of him the coaches still had him in on punt returns every week? That's still on the coaching then. If they didn't have anyone better to field punts...that's on the coaches then. Like I said, our PR game was 100% on the coaches.

Hopefully they have more confidence in Redding next season.

Disagree. Brock was never going to see significant playing time and now his brother who he probably enjoyed being on the same roster as has also moved on to somewhere else.

If he wants to play he needs to drop down a level and find a place where he is likely to see a bigger role in the offense. He doesn't have to follow ZA but I am not surprised that he has decided to transfer.
NM not worth it.

So if he doesn’t transfer to the same school this makes no sense.

He was likely not going to get any run at WR here in the fall. He may have returned punts. And likely was going to be paying his own way if he came back for a sixth year. He has his degree.

So, I actually think it makes total sense.

I agree it's on the coaches for either not teaching him better, or finding a replacement. All I'm saying is there's no way he was told to let that many balls bounce. I wonder if he just had a lack of confidence back there.

Maybe he goes to Mankato and decides to get more involved in the family farm. Can't imagine him getting a scholarship anywhere. Data on the portal doesn't support it.
I don't think he had a scholarship here, after it was switched over to Zach.

I'm crazy to wade into this ..... but, what about the risk of it being muffed and the other team gets the ball?

If you do a little searching on the site I am sure you can find about 50 threads with discussions about punt and kick returns..... :)

No doubt in many of those threads this exact question was debated until every single possible angle had been dissected and redissected and redissected again just for good measure.

As I should have figured, smarter people than me have already figured it out.

Yeah I mean certain balls are uncatchable or risky to catch, and in those cases it likely makes sense to avoid them, but in Brock's case last year he let way too many hit the ground.

The gripes about fair catches on kickoffs were stupid IMO. It makes sense in some cases to return them, but for the most part avoiding penalties, fumbles, and injuries and getting the ball at the 25 is the better play.

Missed it.

The comment was it was "not shocking" because his brother left Minnesota. I said unless Brock goes to Illinois St., that comment makes no sense. It is illogical.

The thought logic to support that comment would be Brock thinking "I'm going to leave Minnesota because my brother transferred to Illinois State. I miss him. I'm going to transfer to a different school, where my brother isn't."

That's why that comment made no sense.

I'm not totally surprised that Brock is moving on. Unless he goes to Illinois St., it's not because Zack left for ISU.

Agreed. But that was a failure at the coaching level and not on Brock. It was apparent he was coached to play it overly safe.
Yup, exactly my point...It could have been anyone back there. And I agree, special teams coaching under Fleck's time here is completely baffling. Rob Wenger must have photos of PJ's cyborg clone closet.

Oh good lord give me a break.....I said.....

Not shocking with his brother gone. Best of luck to him, hopefully he can drop down and find a team where he can see a lot of playing time.

You are getting way hung up on that first line and twisting the comment to mean something it didn't. Didn't say he was leaving because Zack left, just not surprised to see him go since he wasn't going to play much and no longer has his brother on the roster either.

Not going to wade into the return/no return thing but it would be nice if Special Teams in general could find some consistency. Has been one of the areas under Fleck that has been very unpredictable.

FWIW I understood what you meant!

You're still off. While I of course don't know the details behind why he's leaving, here's a very plausible set of circumstances.

- Brock came here originally in large part because his brother was here.
- He didn't climb up the depth chart much, but was happy to stay here because he's playing football and attending college with his brother, even if it means less playing time than he would get at a lesser school.
- Now that his brother is not here, he would rather go somewhere without his brother and have a shot at playing time, than be here without his brother AND not see playing time.

The comment about not being surprising since Zack left makes total sense.

Has been with Fleck since the beginning at W Mich. In fact has mainly been special teams coordinator, there and here, this whole time! (!!!!)

Has done a bit of coaching on defensive ends ("rush ends" here), as he played LB himself.

He knows where all the skeleton's are buried, for sure.

- Brock enrolled in Jan 2017, redshirted the 2017 season, largely never contributed much other than primary punt returner last year, while Zack enrolled in Jan 2018, and we all know what happened in 2018 and beyond.
- Both had gone to IMG academy, I believe the same year (Brock's senior year, Zack's junior year).
- Their dad played for the Gophers.
- Faalele and Dunlap were the same year as Zack and played with him at IMG
- Zack was announced with the 2018 signing class, even though he didn't receive a scholarship that year, because they had already signed 25 new scholarship players (the max, by rule), two of which were Faalele and Dunlap

So, there is definitely a story in there to be told, of how it all went down. We can probably infer bits and pieces.

I bet there are many untold stories about how many kids end up at schools. Probably more so QB's, how much wealthy families are contributing.

Illinois state opens up against the Badgers. Zach is running at first team QB and appears to be much loved by the coach and players. Noah Hickox there as a DL. Now Brock A is there as a WR. First time in my life that I will be watching a Badger opener!

There are three good reasons on the team for an upset.
