Gopher 22-23 Transfer Portal Needs/Watch List

Actually, if you look at the part I quoted before my comment, this person was being very snippy about being corrected. So I just pointed out that there are other places they could comment on those other teams. Anyway, I do enjoy following all of the conversations, but like a lot of folks, we’d rather keep conversations on track.
Thanks BballMama. I realize that I should have messaged you instead of calling you out. I need to follow my own advice!

I am happy to have you posting on this board. It is great to have more fans here. I was one of the posters that started posting here after Sue Street quit hosting her board many moons ago. I welcome more participation and was just concerned that we might be scaring someone away!

This discussion makes me think that boards might benefit from some easily found posting etiquette and suggestions. It would help newcomers from running afoul of the local culture.

Two targets to one school! Why San Diego State? Haha!

The coaches must be gutted to see so many of the athletes that we understood had interest in the U going to other schools. This is going to be a rough year unless we find some talent (or even some bodies) soon.

Another potential transfer home off the board :(

This was a big miss, Hakes is a local kid, but I was hearing she was very smart and the college education part might of trumped the athletics
I’m not sure it was a miss. She announced a day after we announced Mi’Cole Cayton transferred in. She may have been waiting on that decision, but I would have preferred to sign them both. I don’t recall reading on this board anything about Cayton before she signed and seems likely the staff is in contact with others not on “our” board of available players.

Is the reason why Cayton's stats were so light because she was still recovering? I barely remember her playing against us.

no......coach williams is/was very aware of what Cayton went through with the knee. like i mentioned before...she was told her basketball career was very doubtful. Cayton knew what her role was. some good talent in front of her and, imo, coach was somewhat cautious with the minutes on that leg.
2020-21 avg 11.9 minutes
2021-22 avg 8.3 minutes
Mi'Cole is a competitor....i'm sure she feels she could have played more. maybe she feels she could see more minutes for the Gophers.

So you're saying there's a chance?!

Thanks for doing the work on this. I was wondering what possible options were still left. Too bad we don't know how many slots are left open on Power 5 teams.

Let's hope the new assistant/associate coach has some connections/coat tails and will help bring a high-quality transfer in.

Wasn't Finau a Gopher verbal commit at one point?

Are there any head coaches in the portal? Just checking for a friend...

So I don’t follow the womens team very closely so I don’t know the state of the program as well… but I do know a current grad transfer looking to possibly enter the portal from a small D1 school. She started most games (from the middle of the year to the final game) for her team as a 6’3 forward who can defend 1-5 and played big minutes down the stretch. Her ppg and rpg stats are not super impressive, but she was a 4-star recruit out of high school. She can stretch the floor and is outstanding from the free throw line.

I’ve been trying to convince her to enter the portal to go to Minnesota but she is still unsure. Is she someone Whalen would be looking at if she entered the portal? I’ve seen the Gophs really strike out a lot recently and I genuinely think the team would need an experienced player like her.

I believe the portal deadline has passed. So if she entered, she would need obtain some kind of hardship waiver or sit out a year. At least that is my understanding of the rules.

Grad transfer, eligible to enter at any time and be immediately eligible.

Probably need the grad student's parent or HS coach (or other) reach out through back channels to those on the other University's coaching staff to see if there might be interest. That seems to be the kind of thing that happens for recruiting when the age is too young for direct contact and probably other scenarios.
