Oberg Coming Home

This is great. I saw she had her first collegiate career double-double last season vs. Creighton. I’m looking forward to watching her play next season!

I am not sure why the U doesn't always include this in the official release when they add a player through the portal, but I believe that she should have two more years of eligibility since she was a freshman in 2019-20 and gets the COVID freebie for 2020-21.

Great news, I wonder if she considered the Gophers, as a HS Senior?

I remember her attending Gopher games when she was in high school. And according to her bio at Arkansas:
Chose Arkansas over Florida State, Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Dakota, Purdue, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and others.

I am glad to have Destinee but I am also very concerned she will not be 1st string or even 2nd string caliber player. I hope I am wrong but looking at her stats last year is what makes me concerned. The only significant contributions she made on the court were against Arkansas Little Rock, Central Arkansas and Jacksonville State. She did get 14 minutes against Tennessee but she only had 1 steel, 1 turnover and 1 personal foul. It really doesn't look any better in her Freshman or Sophomore years either (see best games in each season below).

Looking at these data only gives me confidence she can give out assists, don't get me wrong, this is super important. If I new she could defend, score and rebound I would be much happier. Anyone able to be more positive than me?

I wouldnt look just at her stats at Ark, if they were a person to person defensive team, Oberg cant defend or run the floor with the athletic 5's.. But, she is a very polished player that always had good footwork. As a youngster she was dominant, but over time her size was her detriment as she struggled to move real well. I think with players that size, the good ones have a motor that never stops, I think Oberg's motor is limited minutes. Helgren was a little more athletic, but that is where it ends when compared to Oberg.. At the end of the day, whether Oberg dominant or not, she is probably only good for 20 min a game, which could be just fine.

Seems like a good analysis based on some video I found from her HS days.

I found the following prospect nation article about her, again, from her HS days, it was an interesting read.

https://prospectsnation.com/story/feature-player-destinee-oberg

She does have nifty/nimble feet and is clearly not afraid to take shots inside and can find space to get the shot. She looks confident with the ball and this is definitely not what Helgren showed. I expect she will score more than Helgren and get more assists but the blocks and rebounds will be the big questionmark along with her overall ability to be in the right spot when playing team defense.

Hopefully the last couple years have been good for her as to developing speed, getting in position and so forth. College is a different animal than high school. I trust Whalen she knows what she is looking for.

I have not watched Oberg in college, but I saw a lot of her games in high school. She is not Helgren at all, she will be much better, unless something has happened since her high school days.

I have not see her in either HS or college. She appears to really struggle to get up and down the court in the video posted with Paige. Will she be able to play more than spot minutes?

A lot of time, with a lot of training and conditioning, has elapsed since those brief clips. It seems weird to try to gauge her abilities based on them.

That is one of the least of my concerns, with a post. I just want them to be able to play with intensity once they get down the court. It is rare that the post is relied upon to be the first defender down the court. I am much more concerned can they score and defend once in the paint. I am confident she will be fine.

Great analysis insights. I think she is a great pickup because she's a center, the thinnest position on the team. She also outplayed Mershon who got regular minutes.

Hence my question to those who might have more intel than I do!

As I said, I have not seen her play in HS or college. I noted that there were times in the tape where her teammates had already scored and she had yet even made it to half court. That was concerning to me. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I understand, it is not ideal to be somewhat slow. Historically, I think we have had a lot of post players that were slow up and down the court. The only ones off the top of my head that moved well were the Bellos and Amanda ZB. I have noticed this seems to be true with most teams. Since post players are usually deep in the paint on both ends of the floor they will usually have farther to go too.

I also expect she will be somewhat better conditioned in college so she will move at least marginally faster.

Interesting. Didn't Janel M lose a bunch of weight prior to joining the Gophers? Also Destinee mentioned that coaches told her that they want to employ more of a high-low post action offense. That would suggest the need for a few more portal transfers?

John Shipley Pioneer Press:

Destinee Oberg’s college basketball career started inauspiciously. One of Minnesota’s highest-ranked high school recruits as a senior, she was a freshman at Arkansas when she was hit by a truck. Literally.

“I was riding my scooter back to my dorm,” she said.

Oberg suffered broken bones in her face and wrist and a concussion. The injuries kept her off the court until late in the season, which itself was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. She played only eight games.

It was the beginning of a tough run for the 6-foot-3 post from Burnsville, a nationally ranked prospect — Prospects Nation had her ranked the sixth-best post player in the nation — who never found a home in a guard-oriented offense at Arkansas. She stuck it out for three seasons before entering the NCAA transfer portal this spring and will start over at Minnesota when summer school begins in June
