They still need another defensive lineman or two, but I think drafting a WR high is becoming much more possible.

This. Unless they trade down later in the first round, there isn't a high-end talent at WR worth taking at 12. This roster needs high end CBs and OLs. Or if the right DE is there, take him. Competent DT are easier to sign on the open market than quality DE's. At 12, go get somebody you can't afford to pay as a UFA. IMO, if you're in the top half the first round, unless there is some transcendent talent (think Ed Reed at Safety), you draft the highest value positions that are hard to get quality players via free agency. Those are QB, DE, OT. I wouldn't normally put CB in that group, but the need is so bad for this team that in this instance you have to. The WR group in this draft is decent, but lacking high-end prospects. Even if the "higher-end" guys like London and Wilson "fall", I'm still not taking them. If they want to go that route, they can get a decent WR prospect in round 2.

I believe that they used James "Duck" White at nose tackle. Must have been '82 or '83, I think?

This draft will be interesting, we should see some kind of idea of how the new regime approaches the draft; priorities, willingness to move for players they want, etc.

I'm anxious to see how Jeff Gladney does for the Cardinals. He's getting a 2-yr, $4M deal. It's a low-medium risk, high reward signing for Arizona. If he pans out, it'll be like getting a first round talent without spending a 1st round pick.

"this was the guy we wanted all along."

"we can't believe he was still available. We had him ranked higher on our board."

"we were not drafting for need. we take the best player available regardless of position."

having said that, I still think CB. Now, if they can trade down a few spots and pick up an extra draft pick, I'm OK with that, but I don't want them dropping out of the 1st round.

a lot depends on how the front office views the OL situation. If they think Wyatt Davis has a chance to be decent, they probably don't go for a Guard in the 1st round. But, if they think they really need a Guard, that is where I could seem them trading down from 12 to maybe 18 or 19.

I'm just hoping the new regime doesn't continue the Spielman tradition of trading all his valuable draft picks into about 10 6/7th rounders.

There were a few times where his wheeling and dealing actually came out advantageous. But more often than not, he acted like he was the smartest guy in the room and instead of just staying put and getting a potential high-end talent, they dropped farther down the draft, decreasing the likelihood of the guy they ended up with panning out.

re: Gladney- it seems there should be an avenue where a team can put you on suspension during legal/criminal trouble is being adjudicated and not have to pay you (or have you count against the cap), but they still keep your rights. Kind of like how the league can put you on the "commissioners exempt list". Maybe that's a thing that I'm unaware of, but with how long the legal process takes, it stinks for the team that can't play a guy either due to league policy or public perception, and then just lose your rights because they have to choose to pay you or release you.

Chris Reed is heading back to Minnesota and will be back in Purple.

Minnesota announced Friday it has agreed to terms with the guard who played collegiately at Minnesota State University Mankato.

Originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the Jaguars in 2015, the 29-year-old most recently played 14 games for the Colts in 2021. He made six starts for Indianapolis.

Prior to joining the Colts, Reed spent 2015-18 with the Jaguars and in 2019 split time between the Dolphins (five games) and Panthers (three games). He was on Carolina's roster for the 2020 campaign.

Reed has started 29 of 61 career games.

I saw a tweet that the Vikings have ~$15 million in cap space. Kind of hard to believe. Not sure if Peterson's contract is part of that # yet and they need ~$8 million for draft picks. So they probably have a few million left.
 

article in the Strib today on how the Vikes plan to use Hunter and Smith on defense. O'Connell - according to the reporter - was positively beaming when he talked about the options the team will have on defense - moving guys around, different blitz packages, different coverage schemes. Said Hunter in some sets will drop back into a short coverage zone.

it definitely sounds like a big shakeup on defense from what we've been accustomed to.

which means we won't have to listen to the TV crew go on about the "Double A-Gap blitz" package anymore....

If the defense improves with mostly the same guys, Zim will lose his mind.

The number I've heard more often is around $10M for the draft class, so they don't have a TON left after signing the last few guys.

I'll take a pass on Udoh. Too many penalties and mistakes. I recall being especially disappointed with how bad he played in Carolina with a bunch of family/friends in attendance (he played at Elon, which is in NC, and I believe is from there).

Cleveland/Davis as starters, at least to start out the season.
Reed/Wyatt Davis as backups.

I think Jesse Davis played mostly OT for his last team, so maybe he didn't get a rating at OG.

I tried to look up the PFF ratings for Jesse Davis - but it's behind a paywall.

I seem to remember Mackey saying that Jesse Davis was one of the lowest-rated OT's last year in the NFL.

He was. Davis is not a Tackle. His numbers and grades from last year should be completely dismissed. He's a fairly solid Guard and he'll be fine and probably an upgrade from the last couple years. Important to remember, the Vikings should actually be pretty strong at both Tackles this year with O'Neill and Darrisaw, which alone will make the OL much better this year.

And thank God the Klint Kubiak Experiment is over once and for all. Just a disaster
 

Now if we had a Center who didn't get forklifted into Kirk's lap every single time against any kind of competent, powerful DT.

Chase immediately became a star and they made the Super Bowl with one of the worst OL's in the NFL.

Theilen isn't getting any younger. I would not be mad about a Wilson or Olave pick in the first round.

We don't have Burrow as our QB.

First two picks will most likely be defense. Then probably a Guard 3.

Bowles was vastly overmatched when he was the Jets HC - some guys aren’t capable of running a team -we’ll see how he does in his second go around

The Jets?? Seriously? Vince Lombardi couldn't have done jack with that roster and that shitshow organization. Plenty have tried and failed their first go around and been successful later. Belichick, Pete Carroll, et al. Besides, he's got Brady for at least another year, in probably the worst division in football, and an OC that knows what he's doing.

I'm admittedly a Bowles fan; that whole crew, Arians, Bowles and Leftwich, had the Cardinals flying high in the desert while Arians was getting drunk on Saturday nights before game day. The Jets gig was a while ago, here's hoping Bowles learned a few things along the way.

Hey, some people (think they) operate better after having a few. Calms them down, takes the edge off, call it whatever you want.

I'm hearing more talk about the Vikes trading down in the 1st round. One common idea goes like this - if the QB Willis is still on the board, the Steelers might want to trade up to get him. as always, it would depend on what they offer.

But, if the Vikes could trade down and get another 1st-round pick in '23 - when there is a much better QB class coming - I would be fine with that.

I don't understand why any team would draft any of these QB's in the first round at all.

The talent just doesn't seem to be there. Why hamstring your team by gambling a 1st round pick that one of these QB's MIGHT develop into a Top QB in the next couple of years?

People hate Cousins already, for example. If you don't think one of these QB's are going to be substantially better than a QB like Cousins, why would you waste that pick? Makes no sense. We've established in recent years that you need an extremely high caliber QB to win or to be a big time Super Bowl contender. If you don't think one of these QB's is remotely that guy, it would be dumb to spend that pick.
