2022 Transfer Portal Discussion

Here's an impressive one-year mid-major center transfer: Jake Stevens from VMI

He just dropped. Really good stats across the board. Ist Team All Southern Conference this past season; 3rd team last year. #1 in league in PER this year (13th in NCAA) and 4th last year. Also led the League in True Shooting Percentage (.684) this season and is #9 Career (.613) for the Southern Conference. He's listed at 6'10" and 266 lbs.
Just checked him out. Solid numbers. VMI has no grad school so according to article its portal or bust.

That has to make it tough on some of these schools. For example the guy you're talking about. Sure VMI would love to have him one more year.

We're way ahead of ya, GII! In addition to helping out a prospective basketball team, Edert would be perfect to include among the cast if they ever remake Saturday Night Fever!
Oops, I’m way behind.

I see Josiah Strong, most recently from Illinois State (last 2 years, previously at Navy and Iowa Western CC) who played for Champlain Park (with Wright and Theo John?) is in the portal. Averaged 11.5 ppg last two seasons with 40% 3 point shooting. For those familiar, do you think he can hold his own in the Big Ten?

Edit: Looking at stats, seems to contribute in several ways-3 rbg, 2 apg, 1 steal per game as a 6’4” shooting guard.

If you have the eligibility left, is there any reason you can't just graduate in 5 years (like my brother!) without an advanced degree?

You have to ask someone with a higher pay grade than me about that one.

Of course, you can also pick up a second major. But, some schools may not fund a 5th scholarship year just based on policy.

Yes, it's hard to make a very good living as a professional athlete. I think most people with any experience in life realize that.

There are a relatively small number of people making a good living at acting, directing, singing, writing and performing music, writing novels, plays, non-fiction, etc.as well; basically anything in the entertainment industry (which includes professional athletics). But, the surest way to not making a living in the entertainment industry is never to try. If all of the people in these positions stopped doing them after college and became accountants, actuaries, insurance underwriters, engineers, and pastry chefs instead, our lives would be much poorer for it.

Of course,
May not have room for three of them.

I know they had a nice recruiting class under Willard. Assuming those guys are still on board. But they had 6 or 7 seniors who played a lot. Don’t know if any of them are returning with COVID extra time.
So ya, seems they’d have spots but I don’t know.

Candidly, I was shocked at some of the gopher transfers this year and their comments on professional aspirations. The boldest statements were by the guys who barely played. Confidence is king I guess….

Interesting. He shot a LOT of threes, 85/208 on the season.

He put up 15 points on 5/12 (5/9 3PT) in a 4 point loss to Wisconsin.

Looks like he played a year at Navy, then 3 years at Illinois State but sat out a redshirt year, so I am guessing he has 2 years of eligibility available. Seems like a late bloomer.

Sy Chatman from Cretin is also on Illinois State.

I too am very impatient so I thought I would look up when we got our commitments for last years portal's crop.

Luke Loewe entered Portal on March 26th and Committed on April 2nd, 1 week elapsed time to commitment

Sean Sutherlin entered Portal on April 1 and Committed on April 12, 11 days elapsed time to commitment

Payton Willis entered Portal on April 1st and Committed on April 16th, 15 days elapsed time to commitment

Jamison Battle entered Portal on March 8th and Committed on March 29th, 3 weeks elapsed time to commitment

Charlie Daniels entered Portal on May 15th and Committed on June 7th, 3 weeks elapsed time to commitment

Parker Fox entered Portal on March 22 and Committed on April 15th, ~3.5 weeks elapsed time to commitment

EJ Stephens entered Portal on March 7th and Committed on April 3rd, ~4 weeks elapsed time to commitment

Ogele is not even listed on the 247 transfer roster so I don't know when he entered the transfer portal but he committed on July 17th according to his twitter account. Since he was the least impactful player on the court and his addition was in response to Ihnen's injury I won't bother to include him in the calculations below.

Taking this all together, the average time it takes from portal to committment is 18.7 days. Since the championship game is on April 4th along with the fact the high impact on court players on our team (except charlie), had all entered the portal by April 1st I would expect all but 1, maybe 2, transfer players to commit by April 23rd. I would also expect to get at least one commitment within the next week to 10 days. Excitement is building!
Well, my prediction I made here was WRONG! Should have had our first commit by this past Monday, oh well, any day we should get a commit. There are a lot of players that are available so I am still optimistic we will get some players that are both good teammates and have some game.

We've sent out a bunch of feelers, hopefully we can hone in here soon.

Nice research! It's crazy that they put it together that fast last year and just as frightening for this year that they have nobody yet. This next week will tell a whole lot.

Ragnor, would you say EVERYONE seems to be slower this year? Sure seems that way to me.

Arkansas grabs another. That's two for the Razorbacks. Makhel on his third school. Went from Maryland to Rhode Island. Good sized. Damn, make that two today. They got his brother also, Makhi. So they have three. He had the same path. (Guess Arkansas isn't slow.)

Mussy is thinking about a National Championship. They are going to be loaded.

These are the players Tony Liebert says the Gophers have "officially" reached out to.
Sam Sessoms
Cam Spencer
Kyrell Luc
Nick Honor
Jamel Horton
Cameron Parker
Ta'lon Cooper
Ethan Wright
Cam Hayes
Camren Wynter (It's evident he wants someone named Cam or a variation of that name.)
Will Richard
Jalen Bridges
Jaelin Lewellyn

Riddle me this. I realize their will be a gap between when a player enters the portal and when it is reported he is in the portal, but damn, he had those two locked up before the ink dried on their portal papers.

And none of have jumped on the offer? This is the same as last year - offers go out and diffident Ben waits for the phone to ring.

All on the up and up, of course.

There aint no quick fixes at Minnesota. We will likely have to build the old fashion way. Develop our young core and grow into greatness. This means a couple more lean years.
most guys we have offered haven't chosen a school yet...patience

Are players allowed to identify the coach they want to play for and contact that coach first? If so - that might have happened. If you look at the commitment dates of some of the kids we got last year a few came in pretty close proximity to the end of the season for their teams.

I wonder if some kids don't even put there name in the portal until they know they are going to have the right suitors. I really am not sure how the game is played these days.
