Sconiers Enters Transfer Portal

Her former high school teammate, Kaelynn Satterfield, entered the portal earlier this season out of Xavier. Satterfield started her career at Ohio State.

Wish Klarke the best. I assume her development this season was limited by injury.

Knock me over with a feather. Was pretty sure this was going to happen. She has looked completely disinterested this year since she was relegated to a deep bench player. Hope she finds a landing spot that she is happy with.

She's just really limited athletically imo, isnt quick enough or big enough to defend well and struggles to score around the rim against size. She does have a nice midrange jumper so she should be able to do well if she drops down to a mid or low major type program.

What a shame. Sconiers is a good player and she would have helped a lot in the post position this year. More skilled and definitely smarter than Micheaux. IMO, The only thing that limited her season was the ineptitude of the coaching staff. Like Powell, better things ahead.

Sconiers hasn't shown that much talent, although injuries may have played a part. Micheaux was much, much better in her freshman year than Sconiers was in hers.

Not surprised that she's entering the portal. Wish her the best wherever she lands. If Gopher program is going to make a jump next year, they'll probably need to find a post in the portal...and/or Micheaux is going to have to up her game.

Its becoming apparent that these coaches are not big into player development. No need to develop what you can (hopefully) can get from the TP. Not a winning strategy BTW. Powell, Sconiers, Cummings.. plus the 5 seniors leaving. Not a good look.

I still have never heard even a hint, from the coaches, that Sconiers was injured. She has appeared in 4 games from Iowa-Illinois. I don't think she would have played if she was injured. Even if injury was the reason she wasn't playing much, I would have expected her minutes to increase, with Rose's known injury the last 2 games, if she was anywhere close to being a regular contributor. Where does this injury talk come from?

I’ve been saying for months that there will be multiple transfers. Writing is on the wall for a lot of these girls. The freshman next year are going to need to help and that’s why they are coming to Minnesota; to play right away.

Agreed. Playing time should be adundant almost immediately considering how this roster has performed. At this point, next year's recruits are Whalen's saving grace. For her sake, I'm hoping they can perform.

What would you like her to do about the five seniors?

Also Grace medically retired….how is that on coaching staff? Ignorant.

The 5 seniors leaving part of it cracked me up, like do other programs not lose seniors? I get how hes trying to fit it into his narrative but considering 2 of them stayed and used their extra covid year here contradicts the narrative hes trying to create.

Found Coach JD's comment that the transfer portal is not the way to build a program interesting. It's certainly worked out OK for Ohio State. And Maryland has almost always welcomed a transfer or two every year. I agree may not be the perfect way to build a program but it's a very good way to fill holes...and like it or not, the transfer portal is now a big part of college basketball. And Whalen's incoming class is a top 10 class, so they haven't ignored recruiting.

And, as others have pointed out, it's a bit ridiculous to blame the 'leaving' of 5 seniors on the coaching staff.

Rose has been injured? How did I miss that announcement? What’s wrong with her?

With freshman forward Rose Micheaux in concussion protocol, coach Lindsay Whalen went to Kayla Mershon early and the senior produced, with five rebounds, two assists and two points as Minnesota built a 40-23 halftime lead. She finished with four points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Some of these kids like Cummings, Hedman and Justice were not even on top AAU teams, so not surprising, this isnt as much development as it is recruiting. Other then the 5 seniors, I predict there will be at least 4 more leave.
Sconniers
hedman
Lex
Strande

we better keep all 3; Kadi, Rose and Scalia otherwise it will be a disaster. If all we have is the 4 freshman next year, I wouldnt be surprised to see Scalia leave to greener pastures.

Well .. it looks like we have a mass exodus at Minnesota WBB. Not Surprising. Every now an then you miss on a coach hire. This is definitely one of those times. I agree Kadi and Scalia should seek greener pastures. I'm sure the AAU teams, players, and families are all talking. The more that leave the worse the look.

I don’t think Kadi and Scalia will leave. This is the first time in a few years I feel like Whalen actually has some buy in from her top girls. I think they are excited for next year. Scalia has been at hs games supporting these kids.

I would not be surprised to see anyone on your list leave except for Smith. Off of your list, I don't think Sissoko or Rose will leave but I wouldn't be surprised to see Scalia leave. Scalia is harder to read because of her apparent introverted personality. I hope all on your list stay, (Obviously not counting Sconiers).

It doesn't appear that any of the players have bought into to what this coaching staff is selling this year (or any previous years - Destiny Pitts). I agree that it would be tough for Scalia to leave since she probably helped Whalen sell coming to MN to the incoming freshman class. She just needs to be at peace with being a BIG10 bottom dweller for the duration of her career.

2 leaving is considered a mass exodus?

Wow! It sounds like the end of the world to some of you. Have you heard how good the new recruits are? I think they’ll have a much better record next year than this year.

Maybe its the old coach in me but i like watching how the bench reacts to certain things and the 2 players that havent been engaged at all on the bench are Sconiers and Strande. Kadi and Rose are probably the 2 most energetic players on the bench. It doesnt mean anything but its usually a sign.

very good point

Well, transfers (in and out) are now a big part of college basketball. I could never blame a player leaving for sake of more playing time somewhere else. On Whalen's behalf, she had an unusually large and mostly healthy roster of 13 to 15 players throughout the year. It's hard to get playing time for that many people. Also, it should be pointed out that only one player transferred out last offseason. That must have at least meant the players were somewhat content here. Will there by more players transferring out? Yes, almost certainly. But if it's players who haven't been playing, I can't fault them and I can't say that's bad for the program. If it's any of the key players, that could be a problem. Although it might seem that I'm going out of my way to defend the coach and her staff, I will also point out that when you have players leave because of PT, it does mean that you either didn't do a good job of developing them or you didn't do a good job of identifying talent when you recruited them. I do hope that from this point on when they accept transfers, they take transfers who can contribute at a decent enough level that it won't impact the development of the younger players on the roster.

One other thought...Curious as to why Sconiers didn't wait until the end of the conference tourney to announce that she's entering the portal? I suppose it doesn't matter much because she probably wasn't going to play much anyway, but I'm also of the feeling that it sends a signal that you're abandoning them.

I'm not suggesting that she would be disruptive, but I'd rather have her leave than be a malcontent in practice or on the bench.

Class of 2020 (Hedman, Smith, and Strande) were ranked #18 in the country. What make you so sure the Class of 2022 will be any better? because their MN?

very good point
Call it selfish if you want, but as an athlete I never saw any reason why players who practice hard everyday and have a strong competitive drive but are relegated to benchwarmer in games should be so enthusiastic about team spirit. Why not transfer some place where they let you play in games and show your stuff in competition? Find a place where you get to play, not spectate.
