Purdue's Edney says Gophers were first to offer, but Pitino seemed to be "going through the motions" in recruitment, Edey said.

But they're saying Minnesota was first major offer
I'm not doubting that, Purdue and the other schools came in right after with the same idea from what I recall. Again, I could be wrong, but I know the offer wasn't out for very long which is probably why it never made it on to 247.

What are you talking about? Clearly he was going to come to the University of Minnesota and play football therefore foregoing the NBA draft lottery. He even said so. If you don't believe him you are clearly a Pitino apologist.

Either that or you have a fully functioning brain and realize that Suggs was 100% full of sh!t with that statement. There are hundreds of things to rightfully rip on Pitino for, but anyone who believes Suggs had actual interest in coming to the U to play football is delusional.

I'm not sure why your sarcasm is directed at me. I never said I believed Suggs about anything.

He’s agreeing with you. Some people still believe Suggs when he says he would have committed to the U to be a dual sport athlete if Pitino just showed more interest in him.

I can only believe the questions to these athletes is in the line of ‘why not the u?’ And these guys are fortunately blaming Pitzy. It could be worse much much much worse.

If one person says something, that's one data point.

If ten people say the same thing, or something similar, then that carries more weight.

How many players have to say "Pitino did not recruit me very hard" before accepting the fact that he wasn't a top-notch recruiter?

That doesn't make him a bad person or evil. the head coach does not have to be a great recruiter IF he has some really strong recruiters on his staff. But, it sure helps if the head coach at least can be a closer.

He was ranked in the 400’s and had 3 high major offers, clearly a lot of coaches didn’t recruit him very hard, probably because they didn’t think he was capable of being a substantial contributor at the high major division 1 level. There are already players that Ben Johnson “didn’t recruit very hard” and didn’t get, in Damarion Watson, Ahjany Lee, and that one kid who went to BC that Johnson didn’t offer. I feel like we’re bordering on “Why didn’t Tubby recruit Nate Wolters” level criticism here.

I don’t get many dates with 600 pound women. Is it because I’m not trying hard enough? Or is it because I’m not interested in going on dates with 600 pound women, and I think I have better prospects and want to prioritize them instead? If that morbidly obese woman dates another guy, diets heavily, gets some surgery, and becomes a model, oh well, I guess I failed to predict that unlikely scenario.

Shaka Smart didn’t re-offer Jordan Murphy after accepting the Texas job. Wisconsin didn’t offer in-state recruit and current NBA player Tyrese Halliburton. Sometimes lower ranked players vastly out play their ranking, and good coaches are going to miss out on them sometimes and fail to see that potential.

Lol. Pitino couldn't get some players because they were highly rated with lots of offers
...
And apparently he couldn't get others because they were too LOWLY rated with too FEW offers.

You can't make this up.

I think Cayman is saying that it is complicated and we don't always know the full story. Let's leave it at that and hope that Ben's recruiting leaves less of us second guessing. Wins will do that!

I’m not trying to split hairs with this post, It’s absolutely fair and probably warranted to say Pitino wasn’t a great or even good recruiter.

However to cherry pick every successful player that went elsewhere is a lazy criticism. Even if suggs, edey, and other players imply that they would have been here with ‘more attention’, even those individuals lack the full context in order for us to evaluate Pitino’s ability to evaluate and prioritize given everything else going on in the program at a given time. Recruiting is a risk-reward assessment. Only so many hours in the day. Perhaps Pitino was off in his prioritization of Edey, as judged in hindsight, but it’s more likely that the eval for every coach but Painter suggested the risk was too high.

With regard to Suggs, even Richard Jefferson laughed out loud at Suggs when Suggs said he was ready to commit to the U during this infamous interview. He called him out as politely as he could during the interview and Suggs had a weak ass explanation.

even still, lack of talent was never a problem under Pitino. He had more than enough influx of recruited talent to win. He just simply could not do it. Do we really need Strib reporters asking about former coach and then writing headlines about it?

Not “couldn’t get,” more “didn’t want.” Coaches will extend offers to players and then lose interest in them and drift apart. At Ahjany Lee’s commitment ceremony, when he committed to St. Thomas, he had hats on the table from Kansas and Stanford, but there was no way that Kansas was still interested in him or would have accepted his commitment. Did St. Thomas “beat” Kansas for a recruit? No, of course not. Kansas offered awhile ago and lost interest.

Barely any high major coaches offered scholarships to Edey. Pitino apparently showed some light interest, extended an offer, then likely backed off, and didn’t make him a priority, which is being framed here by Edey as “didn’t try very hard.” If he got the feeling that the Minnesota coaching staff didn’t want him that badly, he was probably right, because he was a lowly ranked prospect, and very few programs did want him. Coaches prioritize recruits and will pursue some players harder than others. Ben Johnson wanted Payne over Lee, and he got Payne, and Lee went elsewhere.

Too much nuance for USAF.

Tyrese H. No offer from Madison hahahahahahahahahaha. ‘ have you considered Marquette?’

part of the issue is the whole idea of "offers."

some coaches seem to throw out offers like a Shriner throwing out candy during the 4th of July Parade. you toss a handful of candy at the curb and let the kids scramble for them. (ps - I have done that during parades - a real pain in the butt job.....)

other coaches are more selective - they offer kids who they really want.

you see people on this board arguing about whether an offer was "committable" or not.

so an "offer" from School A may not mean the same as an "offer" from School B.

I really hate to dredge up an old thread but it turns out we WERE the first to offer edey.
And this just reiterates that RP was going through the motions here. How can you succeed at your job, if the general public can blatantly see you are going through the motions.

One local D1 recruit said that Pitino seemed like he didn't really care, during his official visit. That was during Pitino's first year coaching at the U. That was strange to hear.

I'm not going to defend Pitino. His recruiting results landed him in New Mexico. I would ask Edey about the other 10-20 schools that probably also offered him. Were they also going through the motions? This sounds like Suggs saying he would have been a gopher if Pitino had DM'ed him 20 times a day instead of 15.
FWIW,Per 247 only three teams offered him, non of them Golden. Late bloomer

Pitino was always 'going through the motions' in recruiting, yet his final Gopher team had 4 players turn out to be conference all americans this season.
I only found two Gophers in the All-conference honors list for 2020 on bigten.org. They were Oturu and Carr.

When you have the opportunity to energize the fan base by getting a slow, lightly recruited, out of state big man ranked in the mid 400’s in his class, you HAVE to go all in.

Liam, Carr, Gabe...and spacing on the fourth ....he was talking this year, I think about guys who left. Brandon Johnson was vital at DePaul in his time there....not sure if he was Big East all some team in his season. Ha Mashburn...I only saw like 8 New Mexico games.

So Edey isn't telling the truth?

LOL.
Nice try ace, I simply posted what the site has listed and relayed that in my post ( that’s what the “Per 24 7” indicates 😆)- but if making false attestations, makes you fly like a bird, then good for you.

You’re better than that, aren’t you?

So then you're doubling down on Edey lying. Pitino never offered.

Got it.

I simply related information, as signified by the attestation “Per 24 7” - seemingly you’re the only one who can’t comprehend it.

Got it Sarge? Or do You need a flyover?
