With the current season going the way it is. I personally am going to start getting excited for next…..what any true Minnesota sports fan knows how to do.
Obviously they have the big 4 coming in, but with two open scholarships (for now, and I could a couple more opening) i figured we needed a place to discuss options.

I personally never had a great feeling about this current season. Yes everyone was back, but they were all back from a not successful season.

I would hope they use both scholarships on post players that can defend and score enough to keep defenses honest.
That sounds easy! Sarcasm alert. This team has been missing a couple of dependable bigs for the last couple of years. Without an inside presence, this team is doomed. I know that every other D-1 program is out there looking for bigs but I truly hope that having Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller on the recruiting trail for over 6 months now will lead to the recruitment of some more effective bigs.

Or we find some in the portal.

It's not like we haven't found bigs in the portal...we still need to know what to do with them.

It's not like we haven't found bigs in the portal...we still need to know what to do with them.
Have we found any good ones? The bigs they have taken so far have been role players at best. They need to find something more than that this year.

I could be wrong; but I think most bigs entering the portal carry a role player tag. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try. It does mean that when we get Helgren or Sissoko etc. their games need to be developed.

We have recruited a few transfers from the portal but they have not panned out as I had hoped.

I expected Helgren to be a little more polished after her time at Kansas. She seems to lack positional awareness and confidence in using her size to her advantage. Someone her size should be able to find a go-to sweet spot in the post by this time in their career. I was very pleased that she hit her free throws today.

Bagwell Katalinich has been solid as a forward but is not an inside presence. She came up big with 10 pts today.

Mershon had a solid 20-21 campaign but, like LBK, is not someone who offers a true back to the basket post presence. I am looking for someone who isn't afraid of contact, is willing to post up and call for the ball, and able to pass the ball out if doubled. Call me old fashioned but every team still needs to be able to get the ball into the paint to exploit defensive lapses.

As a recruited FR, Micheaux has promise to be a true post but seems to have hit a bit of a wall of late. I think a little work in the off season and she will be an asset in the future... especially if paired with another big to give her confidence that she can go all out without hurting the team.

Sconiers has taken a major step back this year. I honestly don't know what has happened. Has there been an announced injury or something that I have missed?

Losing Powell could actually increase the number of looks into the post but it seems like our guards have lost confidence in the post bigs and rarely even test the inside.

Sorry for the rant.

My hope is that Micheaux overcomes her fouling problem. She needs to be on the floor. Look at her rebounding numbers compared to her minutes. Her soft touch is an asset, but she has to develop the ability sense where the defender is and not force her way through the defender. That and a 8 to 12 foot shot like Bello developed later in her career and she will be what the Gophers need. And oh ya, the ability to pass out of a double team to the perimeter. Not asking too much is it?

Alright. 3 open scholarships…..who we getting? I wish the ones leaving the best of luck, but I for one am excited to see a whole new team. I believe Scalia is going to enjoy her next year or 2 if she wants it.

Sissoko has entered the transfer portal.

Sissoko has entered the transfer portal.

Ok. It’s now getting to the point where someone has to start asking the tough questions. And the fact that they’re all post players and we have a new posts coach 🤔

Well that sucks, such a physically gifted player. Was really hoping it would click at some point. some big holes up front for next year now.

what posts? Kadi is a post? I guarantee Kadi is not at the practice end with the post players.

Well, she’s listed on the roster as F, so I would have assumed that she’s not practicing with the guards…

So the current 2022-2023 roster
Mara Braun
Amaya Battle
Nia Halloway
Mallory Heyer
Katie Borowicz
Maggie Czinano
Alanna Micheaux
Alexia Smith
Sarah Scalia

Transfer portal will be interesting. The Gophers I do not believe will get a high profile transfer. So they need to get some girls who want to work with this group. I still believe there is a solid line up in this group. I am interested if Czinano will contribute ever.

I was disappointed when Scalia, Sissoko and Stande left. I felt with the above roster that next year’s team could have been competitive. Now after the shock has worn off, I am excited about seeing a roster full of athletes that want to represent the U. I plan on being there the first home game of the season to help support and to kick off the season. Go Gophers!

new recruit!

EDIT: odd, the tweet was deleted.

also just digging around on Twitter..

The Gophers and Kelly are following Abby Prohaska from ND..

On the face of it this is concerning. She has played such limited minutes though it is really hard to say, although limited minutes is concerning too especially in the Junior year. As you can see below she did have a game where she had a double double and another where she scored 10 but those were early season games against mid majors.

No idea why she didn't get more run as their only center unless they like to play more small guard heavy lineups. I thought I would do some projections if she would have received 30 minutes at the rate she did in the 2021-2022 season. In that case she would theoretically get the following stats:

Minutes/game: 30
Pts./game: 6.4
Reb/game: 7.3
Ast/game: 3.4
TO/game: 1.2
BL/game: 0.73
FG%: 48%
FT%: 42%

Considering that she would most likely be replacing Helgren. I did the same for Helgren:
Minutes/game: 30
Pts./game: 3
Reb/game: 6.4
Ast/game: 1.2
TO/game: 1.3
BL/game: 0.73
FG%: 54%
FT%: 89%

Based on this she would be likely a more productive player than Helgren. She would certainly put more pressure on the D than Helgren but her FT% was horrible in extremely limited sample size.

I like that she was ranked as high as the #6 post and #38 overall player in he class according Prospects Nation on her Arkansas team page. But according to Prospects Nation it is really #12 & #64 respectively. Where have I seen this inflation before:unsure:.

I think she has potential but definitely not guaranteed improvement based on the limited sample size. What does everyone else think?

Well, not sure she would help a lot either:unsure:. Will see if we get to find out...

Apparently she is really scrappy and plays hard, could definitely use more of that.

She's a big body which we just dont have. Shes always been pretty skilled offensively but I'm worried about her defense. I dont expect alot from her but we need size in the worst way and she has that.

I’ve been missing the tweets of “does she wanna be a gopher”…. need more of them

I cheer for both as well and watched most of the ND games on the ACCN. She brings a tenacity and energy that the Gophers need. She rebounds and passes well. I think all her injuries made her less of an offensive threat but there might be an opportunity for her here to be more of a scorer.
