Done Deal - All Chips In

I don't totally buy this whole football thing. So many high-major prospects are so heavily recruited long before they play football as seniors.

If football was an issue, that means the kid likely went through last spring and early summer without any high majors offering him.

So why is Armelin available this late in the recruiting process? He said many of the schools that were interested stopped following him when he chose to play football as a senior. He was talented enough as a wide receiver to get looks from LSU and Texas A&M.

Why would you stop following a kid just because he is going to play his first season of high school football? It's not like he was quiting basketball! Also, did he even have one official offer from any major schools to play football or basketball other the us?

Since he played football as HS senior, he skipped (or missed out) on the summer basketball camps and tournaments in 2009.

It does not appear that he had any other high-major "offical offers", just intrest. Someone please correct me if you know of one.

Chip Armelin (Sulphur, LA) is a 6’3 shooting guard who averaged 23 points a game as one of the state’s best scorers in Louisiana the past three years but after giving up AAU events for football before his senior season and not getting his name out for colleges before that Armelin went un-noticed this past signing period and looked as if he was going to play junior college ball to get that exposure he lost in high school.

“This past fall and summer I decided to play football and that hurt my exposure from the AAU circuit and then the AAU team I played on before that didn’t get out to many big tournaments and because of that I didn’t get the looks I felt I should be getting.”

Technically Armelin has never seen himself play so he's not really qualified to offer an opinion.

You can't watch yourself play basketball.

He reportedly had an LSU basketball offer as an underclassman that was withdrawn as senior.

He didn't get a Gopher offer until this week.

I laugh when people second-guess recruiting decisions on players they have never even seen play. Don't you think Coach Smith has a FAR better viewpoint of the situation? I certainly trust his expertise in evaluating talent and molding a roster.

In addition, it seems to me that, the Coach and his staff have a lot more to lose if their decisions are incorrect and a lot more to gain if their decisions are correct. In the end, we can only determine the relative merit of a decision after the results of that decision have become final and we know all the facts and consequences.

Thanks Caption Obvious.

You have a link for his LSU offer?

From Myron's Star-Trib article today:

Armelin, a 6-3, 195-pound shooting guard from Sulphur (La.) High School, also had offers from North Texas and Louisiana State.

I've posted it before. Feel free to search GH for it. I'm tired of re-posting stuff.

Where is your previously posted 'credible' link about reported LSU offer?

I don't read Myron, he seems to fact check about as well as you.

Yeah.. there was no LSU offer.

Myron's article also says, "Chip Armelin said he will sign a letter of intent Sunday to play for the Gophers."... and while Chip may have very well said it, he of course won't really sign a letter of intent. I did like the, "I also have to say that the facilities were pretty good" comment..

I think Myron mixed up his Louisiana schools. La Tech instead of LSU offered him this year, I THINK.

But I do remember reading that LSU offered him as HS sophomore in 2008 along with teammate.

Clipped from Arkansas newspaper article dated November 27, 2008:

Some of the top players in this year’s Rumble include two Sulphur juniors players who have verbally committed to play at LSU in 6-8 guard Matt LeBato and fellow 6-3 guard Chip Armelin.

Richey said from what he and head coach Scott Bowlin have heard about Sulphur, it is a very good team.

“Everyone we have talked to say they are very well coached and the don’t make mistakes,” he said. “They are not as athletic as a lot of the teams in the tournament but they do everything so well they make it hard for you to win.”

So far this season, Sulphur is 3-0 and Richey said its wins have come against very good competition.

“They’ve played some close games but they have played some highly ranked teams so far,” he said. “We know we’ve got our work cut out for us, they are a really good team.”

Sulphur’s top two players are both junior guards, and both have already committed to play for LSU when they graduate.

Chip Armelin is a 6-3 guard, and Richey said he is as talented as anyone at the rumble.

“Everyone we’ve talked to said he’s the real deal and that you might see him in the NBA someday,” he said.

Sulphur’s other LSU recruit is 6-8 guard Matt LeBato.

Richey said LeBato possesses rare skills for a 6-8 player.

“He’s a really good shooter and he can do a lot of things,” he said.

Prospect Watch

Sulphur: The Golden Tors have a few players who are getting looks, mainly from instate Football Championship Subdivision Schools. Leading is outstanding athlete/receiver Will Hassien, who boasts an offer from Southeastern Louisiana. He had a 77-yard TD reception and ran a kick back for a touchdown in the jamboree. ... Quarterback Garrett McCain is getting looks. He has good size at 6-2, 195 and showed good command of the offense last season. ... First-year wide receiver Chip Armelin has been attracting college coaches to Golden Tors basketball games until now. Look for college coaches to come flocking to check out this 6-3, 195 pure athlete. He will likely earn FCS scholarship offers soon on pure potential, but if he would have been playing football all along, head coach Paul Bourgeois is confident he would be a major recruit.

Four consecutive worthless posts that no one wants to read in the same thread by FOT. The sooner he gets banned the sooner Gopher Hole becomes enjoyable again.

My biggest concern about Armelin is that he visited Oregon and didn't leave as a commit. Taking kids that Oregon passed on (if that is what happened) is certainly not a winning strategy and would be very disappointing sign of where the program is at.

The problem is this was taken from a small county Arkansas newspaper story, based on a guy trying to talk up the competition. For various reasons, sometimes people just get it wrong. I could probably find hundreds of articles that claim eating feces is cool and healthy, but it doesn't mean it's true.

BTW - I think LeBato's dad was their coach at Sulphur. I'm sure the LSU fans are excited to cheer on Matt this season - maybe they'll stop out for the games at LA-Monroe and LA-Lafayette when his college - the University of Denver - visits for conference clashes.

BTW2 - For whatever reason, I like to know where kids are from... Sulphur is in the SW part of the state.. 'suburb' of Lake Charles. Gotta think it's not more than a 20 or 30 minute drive to the Texas border. This is not anywhere near where Damian was from... a good three hours away.

BTW3 - Jennie Finch's husband, Casey Daigle - a part of the Twins organization for a very short time (thankfully) and former MLB first round pick/bust - went to Chip's high school.

I personally appreciate reading about the new Gopher recruits and what other media have to say besides our own. It is interesting to see other perspectives. It saves me the time of googleing it myself and puts it all in one relevant thread. If you'd rather do all the looking yourself, then just don't read the articles. I can't see why posted articles offended you so much???

And yet the majority of people on this thread are bashing the poster for the source of their articles??? Yet others can just say "I have a bad feeling about something I can't talk about" and it is taken as immediate fact and everyone starts jumping off bridges.

Even the negative Gopher BBAll media isnt as upset about these recruits as some posters here are. At least give them a fair chance.

Can't wait until the Gophers have a great season this year and so many people r forced to eat their words, maybe we can start a big apology thread from everyone who wrote them off after seeing how many stars the recruits had, and maybe after, Coach Cal can explain to us how great it is recruiting all 5 star guys every year and his 0 titles to show for it. Tubby doesn't recruit like many college coaches do, and people just can't seem to get that the guy isn't Calipari.

He brings in solid players, some highly ranked, but not classes full of 5 star recruits that will be gone in a year. This at a University without a practicie Facility, which many recruits rank VERY highly as a necesity, even Iowa State has one, and in a stereotypically slow conference. Anyone who expected the U to turn into Kentucky after 3 years was very sadly mistaken.

Hahah, I agree. I am losing trust in Tubby's recruiting ability with every passing no-name commitment.

So lets just forget about Devoe, Ralph, and Colton. Ignore Royce White, Trevor Mbakwe, and Rodney Williams (in case your memory is getting bad, those r recruits from the last 2 seasons. Monson didn't get a recruit close to that "rating" his entire tenure, with problems or without them.)

If you want ranked players, lets also forget about Austin Hollins and Mo Walker. (BTW, those are part of your 2010 recruiting class ...)

I wish Tubby would have just sat on all the scholarships we got from transfers and laptop thefts. Its not like we need more than 7 guys ... right?

Anyways, even though I am sure they will be described as worthless posts, here are some tweets from Marcus on Chip ...

GophersNow

There weren't many alley-oop plays designed for Williams last season, but they need to find a way to get him & Armelin the ball at the rim.

GophersNow

One thing I'm already looking forward to is the Tubby Tipoff dunk contest. Armelin said he can't wait to challenge Williams for slam title.

For those of you complaining about the athleticism / pace of the Gophers, welcome Chip Armelin.

Tubby's recruiting the same way he did at Kentucky: Sleepers, under the radar types and some real head scratchers mixed in with a sprinkling of great prospects. Some of those sleepers and head scratchers will pan out. Others will not. Tubby's doing the job Minnesota hired him to do: return the program to respectability (check), provide a stabilizing influence after a decade's worth of turbulence (check), return to the tournament (check) and become a factor in the Big 10 (check).

Tubby's just not going to recruit the talent consistently it's going to take to make Minnesota a consistent Top 3 program in the Big 10. It's just not going to happen. What he will do is recruit to a program that every 4-5 years or so will be experienced enough and just talented enough as a whole to make a Sweet 16 type run and challenge for the Big 10 title. And I think most Gopher fans, the ones that are honest with themselves, would take that and be content. The other years? It's probably going to be up and down a bit because the roster is always going to be turning over, kids don't pan out, chemistry is an issue. But when it happens, when everything clicks for him..I think you'll be happy with the results.

So getting down on a reach offer or throwing in the towel because you've never heard of a kid or don't like his offer sheet isn't the end of the world.

The standard cannot be Monson. He failed. He got fired for poor performance. Doing better than Monson is a given to retain the position. But at least give Monson some credit.

"Monson’s second recruiting class in Gold Country netted one of the top 10 classes in the nation, according to many recruiting publications. National Junior College All-American Jerry Holman and McDonald’s All-American Rick Rickert made an immediate impact in 2001-02. Rickert was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the first in school history, and Holman worked his way into the starting lineup by the beginning of the Big Ten season.

Impressively, Monson has coached three NBA draft picks, two of those selected in the lottery, in his five seasons in Gold Country. Joel Przybilla was selected in the 2000 draft in the first round by the Houston Rockets with the ninth pick. The Minnesota Timberwolves tabbed Rick Rickert in the second round in 2003, and in 2004, Kris Humphries was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 14th pick of the first round.

Vincent Grier named to All-Big Ten First Team status, marking the third straight year a Gopher has earned the first team accolade. Greier was selected by the Miami Heat." That's from the Gopher website.

Monson also recruited Hoffarber and Nolen. In addition, Monson recruits Abu-Shamala, Jon Williams, Westbrook, Dan Coleman, Tollackson and McKenzie all helped Tubby.

If Trevor plays this year, I don't think anyone expects anything but a top three conference finish.
It is down the road that has people concerned with Tubby's role players recruiting class of 2010 and nobody in the hopper for 2011. Do we have an NBA prospect on the roster? If even the departed Royce White was that caliber wouldn't he have declared this spring? If Rodney Williams is NBA potential, shouldn't he be good enough in college to play? Ralph and Colton are not NBA players in waiting. They happen to be tall. They are nice Gopher players. I have not seen Trevor play since high school...hopefully he hits the court. Devoe is your last chance for Tubby to have an NBA draftee. Monson had four NBA draftees if I didn't forget somebody. Dan Coleman was also close.

Oh ya, and knock Monson....he was on probation forever....not his doing. Tubby has not been here as long but he has to recruit somebody new to catch Monson by your standard of NBA talent or four and five star recruits. Or did Monson develop his guys better?

And I am not a Monson guy at all. Much more so a Tubby guy. They play harder for Tubby than Monson, but Tubby needs to recruit somebody who can score.

Sorry, it's just gotten to the point where everything that FOT posts is worthless and annoying to me. If he hasn't become annoying to you yet it probably means you simply aren't on this message board very often. He has 3000+ posts arguing with people about Tubby (close to 6,000 total and he's admittedly not even a Gopher fan) and single handedly takes over the board sometimes. His facination with Tubby is beyond weird and it almost seems as if he values Tubby's reputation more than he values his own life. It starts to get a little creepy when someone dedicates their days to defending someone they don't even know on message boards and via email with other people they've never even met.

I can assure you that some (probably most, assuming people can be reasonable/sane) would not expect a top three finish.
