Official 2022 Roster Status - Who is Returning and who is Leaving

Bunch of updates.....think I got em all.

Updated with McGill to Pittsburgh State

Is Ky Thomas the only transfer that stings? Not that all 16 transfers can’t be replaced but he’s the only one that got enough playing time to validate he really could play…amirite?

Based on production, agreed.

I think people expected MJ Anderson to start and had some expectations of him. We'll see how he does but hopefully the transfers in and the youngsters mitigate the loss.

I think PJ has made a point of getting better players into the program than they had previously. I believe now with the portal he's doing that even more quickly and it helps offset any recruiting misses or shortfalls.

I think every incoming transfer is an improvement so far with the only loss being Ky. I think this is trending in a great direction for PJ.

When you look at it like that we lost MJ Anderson but gained Surgers, and we lost Cheney but gained Chris Smith ... at worst that's a wash but possibly also a (slight? who knows for sure) gain.

I think that's more and more how we're going to have to look at things. Transfers are here to stay and teams can change quite a bit from year to year.

Anderson is a loss. Surgers does not make it a wash. Overall we have upgraded through portal.

It will take a few weeks into the season to see, but it may be that sitting behind Anderson were some very talented young DEs. I consider Anderson a loss (like Ky), and Surgers may it may not be a “wash.” But if Joyner or Logan-Redding or Booker (or Gage keys, depending on where they line him up) are ready to contribute, we might still be quite fine at DE. Lots of potential.

There will be breakout stars behind MJ Anderson who are chomping at the bits. We didn't hear much from Boye Mafe until his third season.

Yup. This is pretty much what I'm thinking. If the program is moving at all in the right direction as it appears, there will be an increasingly larger percentage of these types of 'hits' on recruiting like Mafe, et al.

There will be some players who are on the roster already that in a year or two we'll be wondering how they weren't playing more by this point and why hadn't we heard more about them previously.

He would have been a starter in a critical position. If Surgers is that good we will be fortunate.

You're talking about what they would have been projected to be in 2022 - a projection. I was just mentioning what they already achieved in 2021 - stats.

Understood. But I saw Anderson play. The projection is solid. Have not seen Surgers so not sure. Agree the stats are comparable so hoping for best from Surgers and younger guys coming along.

Not saying transfer of MJ is a disaster, just unfortunate and definitely a loss.

Surgers started 8 games for an SEC team (albeit a bad one) and had nearly double the amount of tackles. PFF grades are also very close as well, within a point.

I’ll say I’d probably rather have (a fully bought in) Cheyney over Jeffries though and Smith is a guy I think we’d have taken either way.

We have 16 going out but only 4 of those 16 are headed to power 5 schools. The rest are all dropping down to lower FBS or FCS schools. Thomas, Anderson, and Boyd are unfortunate transfers but that is going to happen in the current college football landscape.

On the flip side we have 7 guys coming in who can hopefully make an immediate impact for us next year.

All told, the transfer portal has been very good for us as we have picked up way more quality players from it than we have lost (this year and previous years).

Fair enough. I likely underestimated the MJA transfer.

Added Udoibok transfer although like Barron not sure this one frees up a scholarship.

Wasn't he a Maroon Shirt in the same class as Tyler Cooper? Meaning, walk-on the first fall with a guaranteed scholarship in either the spring or the following fall (don't remember exactly how it works)?

Not a Gopher recruit but just read on the internet that former Okla. QB, Caleb Williams is seriously considering Bucky. Apparently a former hs teammate of his plays for the Badgers and he is recruiting him hard. Also the new OC is well acquainted with Williams. Bad news for us if it comes to fruition.

Latest I read was that scenario is unlikely.

Thought I would revive this thread in light of the recent activity. Have removed Smith from the incoming and added Emilien and Irving to the outgoing.

Sucks to see a guy like Irving leaving but this is probably an unfortunate reality of the current landscape that allows for free transfers without having to sit out or get a waiver.

That said, it is unlikely that we see the extreme numbers of guys going out in the future as the scholarship numbers will be corrected following this season and there won't be a need to have as many guys leave in order to get to 85.

Every team better get good at adding and subtracting.

Added Brock Annexstad, Updated Irving, and removed the returning section so now just shows transfers in and out.
