Way Too Early Top 25 Polls

Why have polls at all before the end of the year?

2020 was a gain for G5 as there were teams that had great seasons like Coastal Carolina in a fluky COVID Season. Getting back to normal and still ranking these teams as high as they get ranked is ridiculous. There are 1-2 competitive G5 teams each year.

Having a 13-1 Louisiana team that had one game that mattered on their schedule and lost to a 5-7 Texas team, ranked is ridiculous. (They won 6 of 9 Sun Belt games by 8 or fewer pts.)

Then to have those teams in the top 25 preseason is even more ridiculous.
To be fair, last year they had beaten Iowa state at their place and had fewer losses than Iowa state and were ranked behind them:

Nobody really cares about teams 15-25

15-25 are more about number of wins than anything else.

Power 5 = 9-10 wins to be ranked
Non power 5 = 11-12 wins to be ranked unless you have a big victory or two

Couldn’t the fact that none of these teams were ranked at the end indicate that it was fine that there was a preseason poll because it didn’t determine the final poll

The argument against preseason polls is that in skews postseason polls. But that clearly didn’t happen this year. Preseason #6 went 8-4 and beat Alabama yet didn’t jump 4 other 4 loss teams in the final poll.
That isn't really the main argument against preseason polls. It is true that over the course of the year the polls sort themselves out but again will go to Iowa last year as a prime example of what can be caused by the preseason polls being way off on teams early in the year.

The only poll that really matters or should be viewed as being close to accurate is the end of season poll. All the others are just there for entertainment purposes and to give people something to talk/complain about during the season.

Agree with everything you said here.
But I was responding to people saying there should be no preseason polls. There is no harm in preseason polls and in fact it probably draws attention to the sport

The issue with early polls is that Louisiana says that they lost to #21 Texas when they really lost to 5-7 Texas.

Purdue beat 10-4 #23 Iowa and not the #2 team in the Country

tOSU lost to the #21 Oregon and not a top 10 team.

Early rankings are all eye test without common opponents and data.

Yeah. What’s the matter with that? It all gets taken care of in the end?

and be careful saying that. I got yelled at for saying the gophers didn’t have a win against a top 25 team this year
