Gophers in the portal

Looks like a Soph and 4 freshmen at the QB spot for Illinois State. (Near as I can tell looking at the roster.)

Zach Annexstad to Illinois State.

BTW, Illinois State plays Wisconsin next year. They also face strong FCS programs including So Dakota State and NDSU.
Drops down a whole level. I’m surprised by that. Guessing he wants his best chance to be able to play. Just wants to play some football and not be on the bench.

Finding a home in the portal is not easy.
That'll be 1 benefit to cutting it down next year, seeing how many guys going from a scholarship to needing to walk on or playing for shitty schools like Illinois St will make them reconsider leaving

I'm not shocked he decided to drop down a level. There are lots of QBs in the portal so landing a top spot is going to be tough for a guy who hasn't played much in multiple years. Going to a place like Illinois State will greatly improve his odds of landing the starting job.

I think a lot of the issues stems from the extra year of eligibility. Players taking advantage of it means more players in the overall pool with the same number of spots available. It's going to end up helping many of the lower level programs. Better talent will continue to trickle down.

Will be interesting to see what happens when the extra year is no longer a factor. The other thing that will be interesting to watch will be to see if seeing players go into the portal and not find a new school will make players rethink their decisions in the future.

Grass isn't always greener and maybe things aren't quite as bas at your current school even if you aren't getting the playing time you feel you deserve.

Yeah, there are just so many QBs in the portal and with him only having two years left, it felt like he really needed to go down a level to make playing time really likely.

In my opinion, I think this should make it pretty clear to people that Athan was going to be the clear #2 this year. I don't think Zack goes to Illinois State if he was going to be a backup and heir apparent in the Big 10. I also don't think Clark transfers to Rice if he was going to be the backup and heir apparent in the Big 10.

Best of luck to Zack. I'll be cheering for him, especially against Wisconsin.

The weird thing is it doesn't show him as committed to Rice anywhere. Not sure if he is still committed or what. Even seen several people on twitter say he's still in the portal.

The strange thing on Clark is he wore #15 and I know 100% I saw a #15 with one of the colored tank tops on (helping signal plays to Tanner) during the bowl game. This surprised me because I know PJ has said "once they enter the portal, we move forward." Not sure if there is anything to that - I see Clark is no longer on the roster at GopherSports - but just found it interesting.

thought he committed and decommitted all in the same day and haven't heard any steam since.

Annexstad Journey-

  • Norseland/St. Peter
  • Parents bought a 2nd home in Mankato to attend West. Didn't get on the field like Philip Nelson did a few years earlier.
  • Then goes to IMG and eventually beats out a Miami Commit, who ends up at Rutgers and then Illinois.
  • Walks on at MN and earns a scholarship and starts 6 games in true Freshman year.
  • Gets hurt and never gets back to starting or seeing the field until 2021 garbage time
  • Transfers to Illinois State.

Served as captain for coin toss for nearly every game until Mo took over in 2021/

if he's still dating darby davis, could be hard to leave minnesota

Yup.
"All in all, the transfer portal is a benefit for player empowerment, but as these numbers show, it also has its MAJOR (fify) drawbacks."

That is the understatement of the year. How many of the remaining players stuck in the portals have already earned a degree? If 75 % of players remain stuck in the portal, how do you call that player empowerment? This is only true for the 25 %.

More importantly, how many left scholarships behind and either had to quit college or fund their education?

Are they counting walk-ons who are not on scholarships? What is the net number of players losing scholarships?

Didn't Dunlap enter the portal at one point and came back? That is interesting, I could see him being welcomed back. I would think KC is a fan.

Any word why Clark is no longer listed as committed to Rice?

The portal doesn't show that Jacob Clark has committed to Rice University. Are the Gophers going to meet the 85 scholarship limit if they bring back JC?

247 reported Clark committed to Rice at one point. This was up for a few days at most and then disappeared. I wasn't able to ever find anything else via google about him ever committing to Rice. So I don't know if this was an error by 247, or what happened.

Yeah, that did happen with Dunlap. But I feel like his switch back came within the same week.
