Marcus Carr Rumor

It's just a guess, but I think the top Euroleague teams and even Maccabi Tel Aviv have players who are the equivalent of as high as late first round and all the way through the second round NBA picks. Carr is a good college player, but he's a full level below Carson Edwards, who was drafted in the second round, made it through half a season in the NBA and is in the G league today.

If Carr could get Euroleague money, he should be on the next plane to Spain.
They do have guys like that. They also have D2 and D3 guys, D1 backups, etc. The hardest part is fitting into the American slots in most leagues. Harder to come by. I personally know a handful of dudes who play in Europe who I don’t think are better than Carr

In Australia, each club has a salary cap of 1.03 M USD, so the average per player is about 100K USD, which seems ok, but the cost of living in AUS is really high, so that's not going to go too far.
They get almost everything paid for.

Unless he can improve on those other aspects of his game, Carr is a volume scorer who needs the ball in his hands.

So - if he's looking for a fit, it would need to be a team that lacks scoring and is willing to bring in a guy and let him jack up a lot of shots. I can't see a lot of major college teams or coaches being in that situation.

So, if Carr wants to have any chance of a pro career, I think the G League or Europe may be his best option.

Any idea what the G league pays? If he can get into the G league and be in the NBA pipeline while making as much or more than an Aussie league, that would be the route.

Carr has been exploring options for at least two years. He must not be getting encouraging feedback.

$7k/month so $35k/yr roughly is the minimum. Depends on two way deals and all that I believe.

Which is what he should have done last spring. G league would have been infinitely better if he still had the NBA dream or overseas to make money.
100% agree.

I actually think Carr would fit in well in China. They have a score first defense optional league. Look at guys like Marbury or Jimmer. I don't care who you are its cool to put up 50+ in games.
Yeah, he would be fantastic there. He is entertaining and would look like an absolute super star on those teams. In some ways, he is similar to a Jimmer type of player.

He likely would be in a top league almost anywhere. Definitely can make a few hundred thousand, if not more, in top leagues. No taxes, all expenses (lodging, car, food, whatever) paid
It'd be interesting to see what he would do in Europe. Most of the teams in Europe's point guards are guys who have had a cup of coffee in the NBA.

One of the best PGs in Europe is Nando de Colo who was extremely meh for the Spurs. Kevin Pangos and Wade Baldwin are good PGs in Europe and they are pretty similar to Carr (more scorer type of PGs).

The one thing with Carr is that the style of play in Europe is considerably less ball dominant than here. That isn't every team but just on average . There is also the truth that the Euro leagues are full of grown men. Pangos and Carr were similar in college (arguably), but Pangos is now a 30 year old grown man who has been a professional for 7 years. So I'm not sure Carr would immediately be one of the better players in Europe, but he'd have the talent for it.

Not to go off on a tangent, but the quality of basketball in Europe is precisely the reason it was such a head scratcher when Luka wasn't the consensus #1 pick. He left Europe when he was 18 years old and by that time he was a Euroleague MVP, he was named to the All Decade team, and he was playing against grown men.

Maybe it’s what we are all saying, but i think there is more nuance to Carr than simply being a ball dominant guard and volume shooter.

I’ve watched a small amount of Texas ball year and think he’s a much more willing passer with the talent/shooters around him compared to his time with MN. He’s looked really aggressive at times, but in late game situations (when Carr is at his most dangerous) it is clear he is being asked to share the ball with other ball dominant guards. I think it was the seton hall game where Ramey got the ball late several times and went into iso mode. Carr missed a shot with about 3 minutes left and never got another chance. Anyways, yes he needs the ball in his hands, but Texas has at least one other guard who is not shy about putting up shots. I don’t know where the best system for him is, but it seems it’s not Texas.

*defensively I have no idea.
**Texas has the ranking and recruits, but do we have any evidence they are actually a good team? With shaka, they ended last season on a 5 game win streak (all road or neutral court wins, 3 of them against ranked teams), but they were mediocre most of the year. Plus they lost 3 guys who’ve played nba minutes this year.

I don’t know if he was getting g league evals even or he wouldn’t have came back. He’s been making every move he can to be a pro and is seemingly following their advice.

True. It's a poorly kept secret that American dudes in China often engage in a mutual non aggression plan of sorts when guarding each other.

Gonna be interesting to follow his career. Guys never been happy wherever hes been so who knows what will happen. Fact that hes leaving texas now is a joke. Figure it out marcus!

If he is just banking his salary over there and living in team provided hotels and hospitality and paying for little himself, this should not be a huge issue.

Yeah but maybe that is the problem. Maybe he is leaving because he doesn't want to have to be the willing passer and be part of Beard's system. Maybe he feels it isn't helping his stock any. (which it likely isn't since no one seems to think he is an NBAer)

If you are likely not getting drafted either why make yourself miserable?

Honor a commitment to a team and coach who gave you a scholarship. Get a graduate degree from a respected university. He won’t make enough money playing hoops to live off the rest of his life, so prepare yourself for that.

Hope he finds success either on the court on in life after basketball my wish for all past and future Gopher players.

Just saw on the ticker he's got 12 for them today.

I doubt he plans to finish his graduate degree.

If he can catch on in a pro league he can make a damned fine living. Better than most make straight out of college I bet.

Love all the assumptions that a twitter account with 250 followers had THE inside scoop. Their handle looks like a fake.

Any idea what kind of money a player can make playing in a second tier league in Europe, Russia or Israel? Or the top league in Australia or New Zealand?
Ask Rick Rickert - he had like a 15+ year career in Japan -

Yep, and that’s short-term. Take advantage of the degree while playing college hoops, go make some money overseas and you’re set. He’s not the type of player who will make life-changing money with hoops. He’s going to need to be employed.

Depends on how Any he can get, if it is in the 300k range then he should go by all means, you've got a limited life span in pro basketball, make the money now and go back and get the degree when you are done.

Anybody know what kind of NIL agreement the Texas basketball players get if any, he might be making more at Texas than he could overseas.
