Gophers vs West Virginia in Guaranteed Rate Bowl

But it's in Phoenix - great this time of year. WV had a close loss to Oklahoma and beat Iowa State. The Bowling Green albatross probably hurt the Gophers in bowl selection, but fans should turn out in the Phoenix area, as they did last time we were there.

If they can make it affordable to get there.
My family of 3 spending $2400 on airfare is a likely no go.

I'm curious if Purdue and Wiscy fans are upset that PSU, with 2 fewer BG10 games in the win column, jumped them.

Ultimately it sucks, but just like the Thursday night kick off game, it's not always terrible to be the only game on for a nationally televised audience. Just kick ass and not be the ones getting their ass kicked.
Most of the country will be sleepy sleepy including me. Boring game and there might be 15 people there.

The wifey and I were excited to follow the Gophers to whichever bowl game they were going to play in. Airfare from Houston is also offensive, much the same prices as from Minneapolis. If we are going to go, we would want to do it up right, which would probably get to 4K-5K pretty quickly with tickets, airfare, nice hotel/resort, restaurants etc....all for a 10:15 kickoff, UGH. Pretty sure we will reconsider and end up watching from home or another destination. Go Gophers!

Valid I guess. You'd think they'd want to start it at 7 central at the latest. Is there another bowl game before?

UW has no real gripe IMO as they could have just beat PSU and it would have given them more of an argument. PU fans may though.

I checked Southwest tonight. They were $589 per round trip ticket. Bowl ticket prices are relatively cheap I think; top price = $100; lower price = $35. Hotels are cheaper than Nashville or Las Vegas as well.

I am just curious why the Guaranteed Rate Bowl isn't played at Guaranteed Rate Field. Asking for a friend. Chicago would be having great weather the end of December, oh wait never mind.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much say does the Big Ten vs how much influence do the bowl committees have? I know the Big Ten approach is a bit different than other conferences and has final say but I would imagine the committees have a lot of influence.

Oh Lord, the hits keep on coming. TT and Miss St before Gophers game on same channel? With those teams lighting up the scoreboard there's ZERO chance it starts on time. Hopefully they bump it to ESPN 2 or something.

Gopher athletic dept offering a $1000 per person (roughly) travel package .... that doesn't include any travel.

That almost $1000 gets you two nights in a double occupancy room in downtown PHX at a decent hotel, in the game, and a few game perks.

No airfare.

Airfare to PHX from MSP looks pretty stupid, and the airlines know exactly who is looking for this timeframe, zero chance they lower prices. If anything, will jack them up higher.

They could charter a flight, but still probably $3-4 hundred per person?

Driving there not a realistic option either.

Who TF is going to spend this kind of money to go to a shit bowl against a 6-6 team?
The many thousands of Minnesotans who are already there should be well represented.

All the games on ESPN just say "ESPN" . Probably means the ESPN networks.

The airfares are pretty brutal. Not beyond flying into somewhere within 4 hrs and driving but yikes...still in the $400+ range...and that's before the car rental that will be $100+ per day "guaranteed" going with the bowl game name itself.

This is one for the locals. Hope they are motivated to show up. Still, play better and receive better don't cha know?

This is what I expected, and it's understandable. Phoenix is a nice destination! I'd be making a case to my wife to travel there for it...if we hadn't just visited Arizona in October and are still trying to figure out how to pay for the trips we took this fall.

All y'all who go there: have a great time!

UW played in Tampa in 2019 also as they opened the season at South Florida. Was that a reason they were not chosen?

Vegas is odd because the basketball team just played in Vegas tournament over Thanksgiving. Doubt those fans are going to travel again.

Most UW fans wanted Vegas instead of Tampa anyway. Tampa is only great because it is on January 1.

Did Covid play a role in this? Were bowls afraid of poor travel by all teams so chose teams with most local fans?

Worst starting time on the nobody-gives-a-shit day.

Wonderful.

Hey. If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Kevin Warren, Big Ten Commisioner right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey sh*t he is. Hallelujah. Holy sh*t. Where's the Tylenol?
That’s the Holiday Spirit🎄☃️

Guaranteed Rate Bowl was formally known at different times as the Cheeze-It bowl, Cactus Bowl, and also Insight Bowl. Its also the same Bowl in which the Gophers lost to Texas Tech, Kansas, and Iowa State.

Those names don't sound particularly formal. Maybe next they'll name it the "Tuxedo Bowl."

Mississippi State got a shit draw too. Unfortunately this is a problem with contracting bowls against the Big 12. They only have ten teams.....so their barely eligible teams end up facing better competition. Texas Tech went 3-6 in conference play.
