Eli King says had Ben Johnson been hired earlier in his recruiting process he "definitely would have been interested in [Minnesota]"

You ask a seventeen year old a question and what’s he going to say ? He disliked Minnesota and Ben Johnson ? Seemed like a nice diplomatic response. Don’t understand the need to be critical?
Why even do the interview? Case closed he chose a different school

I believe King. Here is the question he was responding to:

"So do you think, let's say he was the coach through the whole recruiting process...would staying home [been something that entertained you], had a coach invested in you earlier on, could you have seen you and other MN guys team up there?"

Otzelberger has the established relationship with the King family. It's not just a 3 day difference. I think King is saying if Ben had been hired a year before and had time to build a relationship with him he would have considered it.

Yeah I think Suggs and Matthew Hurt were full of shit and never really thinking of coming here.

Probably most of these interviews are to build a brand or awareness which can help with NIL deals, just a theory.

Regarding King's comments not sure what the big deal is really. It's a hypothetical situation that's not able to be proven or disputed either way.

"Would have considered more" could mean anything from thought about for another 5 minutes to bringing out a Gopher hat on signing day.

I really dislike this type of media and players saying stuff like that
.. shoulda woulda coulda BS!!!

That's now multiple recruits saying they left the state because of Pitino.

And the same multiple Pitino apologists who just can't admit they were wrong, and Pitino should have been gone years ago.

Jeebus.
I know you're not the kind of person who can wrap their head around the simple idea that someone can dislike Pitino and also not believe Jalen Suggs, but it's Thanksgiving go find your smartest relative and pray that the gene pool wasn't quite as shallow for them and ask them to explain it to you. I'm sure they are getting sick of having to explain the mundane to you, but just let them know you're really embarrassing yourself again.

Ask them to read this to you slowly. . .I strongly disliked Pitino. I am ecstatic he is canned and I think it should have been done years ago. I was one of the most vocal people about wanting Pitino canned. I think he was a putrid coach and I think he deserves to get heat for not landing the in-state guys. However, Jalen Suggs is lying about wanting to come to the U to play basketball and football. Matthew Hurt is delusional and Eli King's story seems off. It's just common sense.

I don't think it is a really big deal, I think people are just listening to the interviews and remarking that they think some of the people are full of sh!t. I am way more interested in our current players than what these people are saying.

But to answer your question of why it's annoying for some people is because it lacks character and it's disingenuous. I cannot speak for the Eli King situation and he presented himself different than Suggs or Matthew Hurt.

Suggs and Hurt are people who made decisions to go elsewhere. For all intents and purposes, those decisions really did work out for them. I am not even one of those people who begrudges HS athletes for leaving the state. I get it. Jalen Suggs thought going to Gonzaga was his best chance at the NBA and he had a fantastic year and he's a great player. I think Pitino's dribble dribble dribble offense would have actually hurt his stock. For Matthew Hurt, he had a chance to play for Coach K at Duke. . . I get it. The issue is that these are people who are blessed with these amazing gifts and they made decisions that helped their career, but that wasn't enough for them. They also need to be considered martyrs for leaving for their hometowns. They REALLY wanted to come here, but this thing prevented it from happening. Jalen Suggs' story is a certifiable lie. He wasn't going to play football and basketball here. But he wanted to go on a podcast and whine that he wanted to come here so bad. He didn't. Matthew Hurt . . . we've talked about. The U couldn't have done more for him or his family.

People are way over them choosing to go elsewhere. The annoying thing is that they feel the need to cast themselves as victims or martyrs while doing so. They are sore winners.

I'll admit that I am one of those who begrudge HS athletes for leaving the state... and I'll also celebrate those that stay home. I'll also admit that I want to see Chet sob after losing out on a championship, much like Suggs did. I would have loved to see Paige Buckets cry after losing, but she's too fierce for that.

The annoying thing is that they feel the need to cast themselves as victims or martyrs while doing so. They are sore winners.
This is the crux of the matter... These platitudes are pure bullshit. They make Suggs, King etc. etc. look even worse (in my eyes, at least.) Loyalty is for those who've stayed, or will stay in the future... for the rest of them, good riddance. You left, leave it at that.

Oh, and I still hold it against Joe Mauer for signing a letter of Intent to play football at Florida State... 🤣

So do I believe the recruits themselves, who have no reason to lie ....or a known lying POS like Loblaw, who has an ax to grind?

Hmmmm
Let me think on that for a nanosecond...

If you were capable, you could just use simple logic.

For Jalen Suggs to come to the U and play basketball and football, he would have had to miss half the basketball season. He would have had to be on a football scholarship, bulked up, took hits, and then missed half the basketball season. Do you really think that Jalen Suggs - - a guaranteed lottery pick - - was going to focus on football for the 1 season he played college basketball? Do you really think that? You're a known idiot but even you know that's an insane proposition.

With Matthew Hurt, do you really think the U could have done more for him? We gave his family $100K.

What axe do I have to grind? I have constantly said that I understand why people leave MN and go to other schools. I am a little bitter, but I generally cheer them on. I cheered on Tyus Jones, Michael Floyd, etc. I have no axe to grind with them. I think Jalen Suggs might the right choice for him. I've never ripped on Ben Carlson, Dawson Garcia, Theo John, McKinley Wright, Kerwin Walton or any of the other MN kids who went to other schools.

Wouldn't I want Jalen Suggs to be telling the truth? Wouldn't I be ecstatic if Pitino was really the reason guys like Suggs, Hurt, and King weren't coming here? That would mean I get to look forward to our roster being flooded with the blue chip MN recruits.

Now this entire response is over your head because you're a painfully stupid person. I'm just screaming into the void and these very simple concepts are just bouncing around your empty skull.

Pitino hate was much much deeper than many of us can even imagine
It was pretty obvious how much he was hated for a long time. Yet half the posters on here loved them some Pitino while he was coach and would savage anyone who went after him right until the very end. You bastards know who you are.

Several people did not hate him. I simply thought he was a poor teacher , ran poor practices and was not impressive in person. Hate is a pretty awful thought and will destroy a person's soul.

Obviously some of the kids are blowing smoke up our asses and never would have come. But Pitino’s in-state recruiting was so horrendous that some of the misses most definitely would have. Walton, Garcia, Carlson, and Crowl are a few recent examples.

The mn club basketball cabal stories might actually have merit.

Ok clown. Pitino wasn't a reason in state recruiting sucked. All these recruits with DIRECT KNOWLEDGE of the situation are full of shit, but Bob Loblaw, by God, he's been right all along.

Pitino wasn't a horrible coach, wasn't what Minnesota needed by any stretch, not a Pitino apologist and no direct knowledge of his coaching but hardly at the level of scorn I am hearing. I don't get it, based on local recruiting or lack of success at the local level it appears to be personal dislike rather than professional one. That is not a good look for what I assume is at the AAU level.

agree. a lot of the criticism I’ve heard sounds an awful lot like petty complaints from people who think they (or people in their circles) should get more from the local university. Some criticisms are real, but the provincial complaints have led us into the current head coach experiment.

Some of these kids going to regret not coming to play for Ben. I don't blame any player for passing on Pitino though

I realize for you that common sense can seem like some sort of inside information but we all have direct knowledge on the only things that matters.

OPTION 1: If you believe Jalen Suggs was going to give up the opportunity to be a lottery pick this season in the NBA to play football and basketball at the U, then you believe him.

OPTION 2: If you don't believe Suggs was really going to give that up, then he is a liar.

Those are the only two options. I have DIRECT KNOWLEDGE about the rules of the NCAA something Jalen clearly did not before he stated his BS story (which only shows you how little he actually thought about it).

HINT: If you want argue about how I'm wrong, you're going to need to argue why OPTION 1 was even remotely possible. If you don't, you'll keep looking like a f'n moron.

USAF lives off of a fake disability. Deserves our pity not our scorn.

Yeah the Jalen stuff is weird. He was barely being recruited because everyone knew he was going to Gonzaga. The U wasn’t an option for him after his sophomore year. The others I do believe would’ve considered it more had Pitino not been our coach. Recruiting locally here isn’t as easy as some make it seem. No matter who the coach is, it seems like the local shot callers end up being upset at the U.

You are by far and away the biggest clown on this site and that is saying a lot. Low intelligence, low class.
