So, I've seen a lot of people in here wondering why Thompson hasn't gotten any minutes saying "is he that bad to where he cant get minutes over Curry and Daniels?" Honestly i think he could have played in each of the first 3 games and contributed but BJ has to be looking at the future a bit too. If BJ decides to redshirt Thompson and Thiam then he gets Carrington, Payne, JOJ, Thompson and Thiam for 4 years. Add a medical redshirt for Fox and Ihnen, and you get those two plus Battle for two more years after this year.

Two years from now you're looking at a seasoned roster of everyone mentioned plus additions (crosses fingers and dreams) Chatman, and maybe a seasoned transfer or two to handle the ball or add even more size.

We all know that this year is going to have more than enough moments that are going to be hard to watch due to lack of size, but the foundation that Johnson has built in a short recruiting period is actually really impressive. No need to worry about this roster in the future, it looks a little deeper than we think.

In the current transfer world, redshirts don’t make a ton of sense to me. The odds of Thompson being here in the 25-26 season are low.

well both guys played last night so redshirting is off the table

unless they changed that rule....i know there was talk about making a change for this year but i guess i never seen anything official

we shouldn’t be surprised that bj is super similar to his old boss re: coaching style.

Thompson is the ultimate project been saying it for two years. If you have seen him play at all it is extremely obvious. The coaching staff obviously has a plan in place for him I trust the plan it will work itself out.

Exactly. The only redshirts I can envision in the new era would be walk-ons who might hope to win a scholarship somewhere along the line. Reshirting a scholarship player, unless by his own strategic choice, makes little sense. AN entire year of development goes down the tubes when he transfers.

I thought they could play in like 6-8 games or something. Kind of like football where you get 4 I believe. I don’t think Ben would be dumb enough to waste a redshirt for 2 minutes

It was just a thought. If that was the plan discussed with both players and they have no intent on transferring I could see it. Especially if they can look in the mirror and see for themselves that they need development before contributing.

They can if injured, I believe

Thompson should be seeing the floor more. At some point this season Eric Curry's knees will be mashed potatoes and we will have one guy over 6'7 who has played all season. I really don't want Battle having to play defense against Cockburn and others.

Thompson and Thiam both got in last night, they'll both get some run, plus with the portal and one time transfer rule it's going to be impossible to red shirt guys now. Long term can't expect Eric to play 30 minutes a night, we are going to need every big body on deck in conference so Thompson will get some run then. We saw Thiam for a stretch last night, giving him 3-5 minutes a game and getting Suntherlin minutes closer to 20, should help shave a couple of minutes off of Lowe, Stephens and Willis' minutes

They both played yesterday, doesn't that eliminate the redshirt option?
Yes.

The only college sport where you can play games/matches and still then go down the normal redshirt route is football, now (up to 4 games, including bowl game).

All others still use the old rule: if you step on the court or field and have officially participated in that game/match, then that season counts as a participated season for you.

You get to participate in four seasons in college, end of story, unless you get a waiver (eg, for medical hardship or with covid everyone got one).

They can if injured, I believe
To qualify for a medical hardship waiver, it has to be a season-ending injury and you have to have participated in less than 30% of the total games/matches during the season.

I bet we see Ramsberg some...

Probably shouldn't read much into playing time over these first few games. Would expect to see the roster expand as the season goes on out of necessity more than anything else.

I think they were playing to win in the tournament so Johnson kept the bench short and went with the guys he trusts right now.

Do you know how medical hardship waivers work for players coming back from injuries? For example, if Fox came back in March for the big 10 tournament, and played in less than 30% of games on the year, could he still apply for a medical hardship waiver based on the games he missed at the beginning of the season? Or does it need to be a “season-ending” injury? I can’t recall that ever happening, but not sure what’s actually possible.

There is also a part in there that I didn't mention, where I believe the participated games have to occur within the first ____ (fraction) of the year. So in that scenario, 2021-22 would count as a participated season for Fox.

But, on the other hand, you could look at it like that he got the 2020-21 season "for free" (everyone automatically got a waiver for covid). So .... have to make that decision.

@skyman31 just did a quick Google search, and if you trust this site https://informedathlete.com/ncaa-division-i-medical-hardship-waivers/
then it says:

To qualify for a Division I Medical Hardship Waiver:

  • The athlete can’t have participated in more than 30% of the number of games or dates of competition in their sport.
  • The athlete also must not appear in a contest after the midpoint of the season.
  • The athlete must have contemporaneous documentation from a medical professional that their injury or illness prevents them from being able to continue participating in their season.

Thompson best get some minutes before the conference season.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for the info! I guess it probably is to ensure that you can’t have a player “recovering from an injury” until there is just under 30% of games left.

We have two true cupcakes coming up. I would love to see Thiam and Thompson getting 10 min apiece. Thiam played great defense yesterday in his limited action. It would be huge if he could emerge as a "3 and D" guy for us to spell our other guards from time to time.

Also, Sutherlin needs to be playing more than 19 minutes per game. I love his game and his mentality. He seems to be a superb rebounder on an undersized team, which is an added bonus.

I didn't even notice Thiam get in the game. Perhaps a draw back of broadcast team doing it remote. They can't keep up with the substitutions.

I didn't notice either one! Now I feel like I need to watch it again. When was Thompson in?
