3 more than those other clowns

Iowa remains at 16...surprising. Some thought they might dump from the rankings entirely.

When you think about it there's absolutely no good reason why Cincy would be #2 and MSU #6, other than pure inertia.

Let's say beating ND and Mich are equal. The rest of MSU's work is far deeper.
Good point. Also, bad news for Cincy: SMU lost yesterday.

I think voters have a hard time admitting how wrong they were. Since they had Iowa at 2 not that long ago they don't dare drop them out of the top 25.

I have been down on MSU but they pulled off the win yesterday. I will be very interested to see how they do against OSU. I still think they are a bit overrated but until someone beats them they have earned the right to be up there now after knocking off Michigan.

It looks like it'll be up to us to throw Iowa out of the polls. That suits me just fine! We need no other reason except Floyd, but beating the Squawkeyes and having them thrown out of the rankings, would be a sweet bonus.

MSU plays very little defense but they keep scoring enough and doing the little things right; kinda the opposite of Nebraska. It's still hard for me to see them getting through their schedule unscathed, but I've been wrong all year so far.

I'm going to make a bold prediction. Iowa loses to Northwestern this week and drops to maybe #20 or worse. For some reason, Iowa has had a lot of trouble with Northwestern in recent years. Maybe Northwestern gets pissed with all the Iowa fans filling their stadium.

Yup this is why early season rankings are worthless -- inertia. It's why Iowa is still ranked despite being crushed by two unranked teams after beating two other currently unranked teams. I'll be curious where the CFP rankings put all these teams. You're probably correct that MSU should be ahead of Cincinnati -- that's a great example.

I disagree. This is exactly why early season rankings matter. Because voters get it in their heads that this or that team is better or worse than they actually are, and that carries through for the entire season and can affect bowl invites.

I love to hear someone like Glen Mason tell us how seriously these 64 voting coaches take this poll. These guys all have to deal with post game press conferences, (potential) travel, updated scouting reports, injury updates, film analysis, etc. after their respective games. For example, PSU's James Franklin is among the voters. His game did not end until nearly midnight ET. Do he really take the time to sit down and analyze all the goings on throughout college football before he sent in his vote?

I would not be surprised if many coaches have some assistant fill it out and the coach maybe reviews it for a couple minutes.

Oh I think coaches have said exactly that.

In fact I remember one (I forget who) said they never even see it / what is submitted / don't have time for that.

I know I'm far from the first to point this out, but I think this is the biggest flaw in the rankings. A team that starts the season ranked low has too many teams to pass if they turn out to be better than expected. Teams are ranked before the season even starts.

But don't you think 13 weeks is plenty of time to work your way up? I certainly agree that pre season rankings are based strictly off the previous season, but this stuff sorts itself out during the year.

A 9-3/10-2 team will be no worse than top 12 when all is finished.

Two words: confirmation bias.

Maybe but it’s still Iowa and at Kinnick. We don’t have a good track record at Kinnick. I still think Wisky is going to be our toughest challenge even at home and Sr Day
You mean culture won’t rise to the occasion?
I think the Gophs and the culture are ready to get it done this time. At some time, our coach, his staff and all the players have to say: “…enough is enough…” and just plain pick up the ball and run with it. Take matters into their own hands and demand to beat that stinking badger. Same with that stinking hawkeye.

It is time for the entire Gopher Football Program and coaching staff to win these border battle games.

Enough is enough. THIS is the time. No excuses. Do it!!!

I think it favors traditional powers because they tend to be ranked higher sooner and a team rarely drops if they win. I do believe it sorts itself out for the most part though.
