RIP Charlie Watts

Damn. Saw the Stones live in '78 at the old St. Paul Civic Center. Peter Tosh was the warmup act - Tosh and Jagger had done a duet on Tosh's most recent solo album.

and, if memory serves, the tickets were $10. It was a different era.

and in closing, from the great John Hiatt's song "Slow Turning,"

Now I'm in my car
I got the radio on
I'm yellin' at the kids in the back seat
'Cause they're bangin' like Charlie Watts!

The overhand work on the snare and the swinging on the ride cymbal, you can really see the jazzman in him in this clip.

RIP Charlie. I have never heard another drummer say a word against his playing.
After reading this statement, it made me wonder about Ginger Baker and his thoughts on Watts and I found this interview from eight years ago, which is just too good not to unearth. Think Gregg Popovich sideline interviews on steroids for irascibleness--and spoiler alert, he was fond of Watts as a friend and as a drummer (I think)

Wilco pays tribute...

...and Jason Isbell

Even stones don't last forever but I wish these would.
