All Things 2021 Tokyo Olympics Thread

My wife and I have really gotten into the swimming. They’re fun to watch, especially the relays.

Yeah, swimming events are always so much fun to watch. Very weird not seeing Phelps in the lanes this year.

I was just watching rugby for quite possibly the first time and I've come to this conclusion:

Life is meaningless, rules do nothing but get in the way, and the only thing that makes sense is chaos.
When in doubt: just run the guy over. :)

Glad we get these nice, long vignettes on these unbeatable American swimmers …… who then win bronze. :cautious:

Highlights of Japan's Gold Medal win over USA:
The sensational double play spiking a potential US rally and closing the 6th inning starts at 4:19.

Why does the Biles thing have to be talked about so much? She dropped out and someone took her place. They still won silver. Move on already.

Funny how she dropped out because she felt the pressure of it being all about her and as a result makes it more about her....

Because talk is what makes money? I guess.

I personally get saturated on talk/hype/pre-game/post-game blah blah blah, really quick. So much talk.

I think women's gymnastic was supposed to walz in and dominate. Maybe swimming too?

I doubt anyone would say they've been disappointments, but clearly not a domination.

Yeah they were interviewing the other 3 gymnasts and every question was about Simone.

Too bad. I realize that she's the most dominant gymnast to ever exist.....but damn. Let it be. The other three and Biles's replacement went out and won a silver medal. Everyone's playing it up like this is some sort of travesty.

I heard this morning that she is a bigger hero for quitting than being the best gymnast ever. I don't think some people understand the word hero.

Well, we all hear what we want to hear.

Charlie Kirk called her a "selfish sociopath" and a "shame to the country"

It's juts downright frightening that people like this exist (and have a platform to top it off). Everything sucks.
Yikes... My wife and I were talking about it in the context of increased mental health awareness. In the past, the coaches would probably tell her to suck it up and get back out there. Lots of stories of intense gymnastics coaches. I think it's healthy and good for the athletes that they recognize the mental health aspect.

With Biles and also with Jacoby beating King, it always seems like the star athlete that gets all the press and backstories is usurped by a young upstart. Happens every Olympics.

That shouldn't surprise anyone. Just another asshole getting too much attention.

I have zero problem with her doing what she did, but I also don't think it was hero like. Too bad it will continue to dominate the Olympic talk.

Right or wrong... the action was, by definition, selfish

lol. No....it wasn't.

A) If she truly wasn't up for the event....then the team may have been better off with her sitting it out. She said that she had been messing up turns and such. Really.....if she had any inklings that she might mess up badly.....it would have been selfish to go out and do the event.

B) It gave one of her teammates an opportunity to compete on the Olympic stage.

Agreed.

She said she had some feeling of doubt during the vault. If that doubt turns into falls, or forgoing more difficult parts of routines on the other apparatus, then she thought she might cause the USA not to medal. She had faith in her teammates to at least get on the podium (which they did).

BTW, kudos to Jordan Chiles and Grace McCollum for their performances on apparatus that they were not scheduled to compete on during the team event (Lee & Biles were the only 2 that were to do all 4). They filled in and got the USA onto the podium.

I'll walk back my selfish comment. Guess I just have a hard time believing that the most decorated gymnast in history got psyched out. But she did say it was a weird year, 2020 definitely messed with people's heads.
