All Things Movie/Documentary Reviews/Recommendations Thread

I completed my annual watching of Dazed and Confused last night.

True, Benny should have not reacted as harshly about doling out a beer to Hirschfelder who had just been hazed, though I could understand if he thought it would be "wasted". As a freshman, I could see Hirschfelder, cracking it open take a first swig, gag and chuck it away. Benny was totally justified by ripping O'Bannion for literally wasting one by throwing it on the ground.

Hirschfelder totally deserved a brew though, he had it going on with a girl at the rec center only to be pulled away by buddies who left him out to dry when they encountered the seniors. I would start to hang out with a new crew if I were him.
Hirschfelder will dump those guys as soon as he gets a girlfriend who likes more than making out.

Tenet, well made and great acting. Utterly confusing plot.

If you're looking for a fun family movie, I recommend The Mitchells vs. The Machines. We watched this weekend, and everyone liked it. Many LOL moments for young & old.

I liked it and I tend to yawn at kids/animated movies.
I tend to think today's kids/animated movies rank among the best in modern cinema, and Mv.M is one of the best in a while. Similar feel to Lego Movie.

So my wife, convinced by one of her friends, convinced me to watch the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe in chronological order (vs. release order). I generally dislike comic book movies, and Guardians of the Galaxy is the only MCU movie I've seen. I'm told there's over 20 movies, and at least one person said GotG is the best one. Is this a worthwhile endeavor, or is it all downhill from GotG?

Low bar...very low bar with modern cinema, but you are probably correct.

It all depends on what you like to watch, or what you're looking for from a movie. The Marvel movies for the most part are good popcorn movies. some are better than others (Iron Man 2 and Thor-The Dark World are among the low points).

GotG is a different animal - a lot more comedic and less formula. So, if that is the type of movie you like, the more conventional superhero movies may not be your cup of tea. But, Thor-Ragnarok is also in the GotG vein - it is more of a comedy than an action movie. and GotG 2 is even more over-the-top. The two most recent Spider-Man movies have a lot of comedy mixed in with the action, with some critics comparing them to a John Hughes teenage comedy, only with superpowers. The Ant-Man movies also have a lot of comic moments and get downright goofy at times.

As far as the rest - Captain America-The Winter Soldier is in the vein of the 70's political thrillers. it's as much a spy movie as a superhero movie.

the others are much more conventional superhero movies. they won't change your life, but they're watchable.

I saw A Quiet Place Part II in a theater yesterday. Quite good, one of the best sequels I have seen. The kids are more the stars of this one, in my opinion.

Trilogy?

Definitely felt like another one was coming. I thought it was great too.

I saw it as well recently. I feel like both movies were not very positive towards the kids. The kids pretty much caused most of the trouble.

haven't seen "Quiet Place I" yet. I'm a little burned out on post-apocalyptic stories.

apparently every writer in Hollywood has an idea that features survivors struggling to get by in the bleak remnants of society.

I agree with your sentiment, but this isn't exactly like that.

SPOILER Alert - This movie is actually more centered on the family finding out whether or not there even is a remaining society.

Maybe that's disclosed in trailers, which I try to avoid.

I haven't seen either movie (not my genre) but did read/hear that Krasinski wrote it as a metaphor for parenting. We love our kids and would do anything for them; but they're a pain in the ass come the apocalypse.

I'm a big apocalypse guy. I always shake my head when the Walking Dead shows kids. No way they would survive.

Completed my annual end of the school year watching/Dazed and Confused. It never gets old.

That would be grounds for divorce in NY State.

Oslo on HBO Max is worth a viewing if you like movies that cover political topics. It's regarding the Oslo Peace Accords of 1993 and how 2 Norwegians got the PLO and Israelis to the table and facilitated the process.

It won the Tony Award for Best Play, so it has excellent writing and well told/paced story.

Clarence Thomas created equal. What an amazing life he’s lived.

Completely different sort of political movie.....and I cannot remember if I saw the recommendation here or not....but 'Dick' is a fun, funny, sweet movie about two ditsy, excitable teenage girls (Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams) who get wrapped up in the Nixon (Dan Hedaya) Watergate scandal. The secondary cast (Will Ferrell, Dave Foley, Jim Brewer, Ana Gasteyer, Ryan Reynolds, Ted McGinley, Bruce McCulloch) is pretty excellent and hilarious as well. I give this movie 85 tomatoes and only 15 green splats.

I saw Summer of Soul today, just tremendous. What a great experience in a theater but I am sure will play well at home too. Directed by Questlove, he weaves it all very well into a great story. Whomever filmed the footage originally in 1969 did a fantastic job.

It features Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Staples Family, Sly & the Family Stone, Mahelia Jackson, Nina Simone and other greats.

Watching it tonight.

Took the wifey to "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" the other day. I have to admit, it was pretty damn good, I gotta recommend it. Ryan Reynolds is good in most things he's in, and in this one, Salma Hayek is both smoking hot (as always) and has a mouth dirtier than a longshoreman. She gives one heckuva performance.

I may even go with a full two thumbs up. It was a good action flick

I tried to get the wife to go last night. No go. She thinks it looks lame. I will use your recommendation to sway her.

It's all about expectations. If you go in thinking it's going to be the greatest action film ever, you're likely to be disappointed. But I think it was better than the first? I liked it, and Salma Hayek was pretty good, Reynolds was good, and at the end of the day, the popcorn was pretty good and for me, that usually translates into a good couple hours spent at the theater
