All Things Gophers at Colorado Road Trip Thread

Not to derail the thread...but my family is going to Colorado this summer and planning on going to Vail Wed. (from Denver) and coming back Saturday....
We gonna hit major traffic?
Saturday should be good. But main thing is, you probably want to try to be back on I-70 by like 1-3pm (or maybe after 6pm). If you're trying to head back to Denver at same time as the day trippers, you can get caught up in traffic. Either way, Saturday is FAR better than Sunday for sure.

Agreed on the I-70 situation. Pretty much have to leave mid-afternoon on Fridays to beat the rush and definitely be aware of time on any Sunday drive back. It's pretty much why I stopped snowboarding unless I go rent a place or stay with a friend for the weekend.

The Light Rail situation is getting better all the time in Denver though. Bummer they haven't been able to build to Boulder yet.

I think now that the wife and I were lucky enough to land a house in Golden, I don't see us going anywhere soon - especially not with the way this housing market keeps going crazy. Although, if I could live in Steamboat Springs full time I'd seriously consider it.

From what I have seen from my friends, once you get past 25, Boulder is probably one of the worst places to live as a single guy. So many of the women are attached. If you're a couple or a family and have some loot, Boulder could be pretty ideal. Even most of the big hitters at my company (which has headquarters in Boulder) end up living in Superior or Louisville or Broomfield. Pretty much looking at close to a million-plus for any house worth a damn in Boulder proper.
We rented a place in Breck for a season with a bunch of friends. Would drive up after dinner on Friday, then drive home after dinner on Sunday. It was the best way to manage the traffic.

Glad you found a place in Golden. If I didn't live in the Park Hill/Cheesman/Congress Park area then I would go for Golden. Excellent choice.

Wish I would have bought in Denver. I have vivid memories of one of my coworkers buying a craftsman in the Highlands for ~$250K in 2009 at the heart of the recession. I remember telling him I thought it was a bit dodgy there and he overpaid. That place would probably be worth $1MM today if he had not put a single cent into it. Shows what I know!

We found a small town in Oregon (Ashland) that I think has a lot of similar things to offer -- walkable with an old downtown district, hiking trails accessible from downtown, good restaurants and breweries etc.

You should be fine, Sunday afternoons (3-6) are typically the worst for traffic. Saturday will be busier but shouldn't be too bad.

Any idea when the game time will be announced for this game? It would help a lot in making the travel plans.

Any idea when the game time will be announced for this game? It would help a lot in making the travel plans.

I have a call with the GM of the CU Ticket Office today. I'll see if he has any clues regarding game time. Hoping for a 5pm or later start. Highly doubt they would have a P5 matchup like this as a noon game and I don't really remember the Buffs having many 10am MST starts.

So I got some answers:

-- The CU Athletic Department is operating under the assumption that this game will be able to host full capacity. CU is the only D1 program in the state that has not announced 100% capacity for 2021 season yet and they are a bit salty about it. Apparently it's a holdup with Boulder County, but they believe it will be sorted out soon enough.

-- As far as the gametime (this is really not going to make anyone's lives easier):

1. The game is under Pac12 TV rights, so under normal circumstances, the Pac12 will decide 12 days before kickoff on the kickoff time and TV assignment.

2. Under those circumstances, the game could start anytime between 12-8pm MST. He said that if CU were to beat A&M or Minnesota beats Ohio St, obviously the national profile of the game will be higher and it's more likely to be an 8pm start (Maybe FS1?). If both teams lose those openers and come into the game 1-1, then it's more likely it will be a 1pm kick.

3. CU is making a request to use one of their three 12-day exemptions on this Minnesota game. In that case, they will find out the time well ahead of time. He said they will know in mid-June whether they get that exception.

Hope that helps a bit, but if you're trying to fly in on Saturday, you probably need to land by 9:30am (at absolute latest) to play it safe. Traffic on 36 going into Boulder the couple hours before the games gets pretty hairy. Also, based on the possibility of a night game, I'd say any thought of flying out Saturday night would be major gambling.

Any good spots to watch the Vikings the next day in either Boulder or Denver?

Working on that right now. Fly in Thursday and fly out Monday. .. first three nights staying in Boulder we were thinking Sunday in Denver. Vikes specific bar would be great they are in Arizona that Sunday... thank you!

The main Vikes bar in Denver is Capital City Tavern - http://capcitytavern.com/

It's 100% Vikes, so you will be among friends. It's not a huge place, so get there a bit early if you wanna get in. I tried to go for a Pack/Vikes game and the line was around the block 45 minutes before kick. But that's your spot.

Otherwise in Denver, Blake Street Tavern should have all the games on. Stoney's is good too, but they have fan allegiances there.

This list is dope too: https://www.uncovercolorado.com/denver-pro-football-bars/

If you are spending Sunday in Denver and want any recommendations on what area to stay in or great dinner spots, let me know what kind of food you like and happy to list out some ideas for you.

That AZ game will almost look and feel like a home game for the Purple. Lot of MN transplants and retirees there.

Hearing 11am Mountain Time...

From where? The CU ticket GM who I spoke with last week (and my memory) said that the earliest possible time for a Pac 12-controlled game is 12pm MST. But even then, he said unless they get approved for a special exception for the game in mid-June, they won't know the kick time until 12 days before.

The only time I recall a CU home game starting before 12pm was back in the Big 12 days when they played Nebraska as the main ABC game - this was also 20+ years ago.

Yeah, would be 1pm CST/12pm MST.

I'm gonna highly doubt this is correct. Haven't had a CU game start at 11am MST for 20+ years

Okay, I'm eating crow here. Just heard back from the CU GM. It actually is an 11am MST start. Very curious what network they are going to be on for that start time. I'll ask and see if I can find out

You might want to fact check just a little bit. The Utah game at CU last year was at 10am mountain. The Air Force game in 2019 at CU was at 11am mountain.

Fair enough. You must really like watching inferior football. I live here and I didn't even watch those games. But the fact that the GM of the CU ticket office told me last week the earliest the game would be was 12pm MST says that pretty much nobody saw this coming.

What section is the "gopher section" where are people sitting? We are buying tickets and planning the trip out there!

Generally visiting fans are placed in Sections 101 and 102. But those aren't the best sections. (basically lined up on the side of the north end zone). I'd just get seats that you like. There appear like there will be a lot of Minnesota fans there

I wonder when they will have information about tickets.

I wonder when they will have information about tickets.

According to the GM at the CU Ticket Office, they are opening individual game sales to Buff Club (alumni club) members at the end of June. I believe they will have an exclusive window of time to purchase first, I'm guessing public on-sale will take place some time in July.

As I mentioned in another post on this thread, Boulder County has not yet given the public okay for 100% capacity for CU football this season. So I don't imagine they can really do a full public on-sale until that happens.

Just bought my flight, rental car, and hotel........gambling that they will have a full stadium and I can get tix! Please let me get tix
