All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

Now that his college choice has been made I feel better about sharing my thoughts.
  • A player like this rarely makes a big impact on their college team because they aren't around long enough. Examples include Kris Humphries or Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, both who were the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft from teams that didn't make the NCAA tournament. Outside of basketball we have the local case of Casey Mittelstadt. Or Kyle Okposo. Back to basketball, even Joel Przybilla.
  • That soft conference is a WAY better place to protect your draft status than B1G where the season is a grind.
  • I really don't see him dominating college basketball because of his frame. He has all the tools to project as a "unicorn" or "stretch 4" or whatever they want to call him in the NBA. That's his future. His present isn't as promising, in my view. He won't be a ball dominant guy that averages 20. He won't post up and take the banging down low. He'll be great, tantalizing watchers with his array of skills. Putting the team on his back and playing clutch down the stretch? I don't see it.
I wish him well. Love how far basketball in Minnesota has come. Long-term I don't see not getting (or getting) Chet as critical to the future of the Gophers.

Agree. But her going to UCONN made her more of a national legend, whatever legend means to each person. I just do not see the value others do in in being a legend in Minnesota compared to other places.
It typically may not be as significant, but like I said earlier Lindsey put girls basketball on the map in Minnesota. It caused a lot of very good female athletes to pick basketball as the sport they want to play. She has improved the level of play in the state and helped produce the current players. Her impact was much greater than just bragging rights. The hope with Chet choosing the U is that it will make the U a viable option for all future in state players.

Chet isn't coming here (never was) and I can't say I blame him. Nationally, the U's men's program is a joke and will be considered such until they actually can prove something on the court.

He'll do well at Gonzaga, but I figure he's a one-and-one anyway, so it's Suggs 2.0.

The state is more than the university. Its fairly rare that high level players ‘stay home’ unless its UCLA
Actually I would take 'rare;' that'd be a step up from 'unheard of.'

Yeah, what a waste of time for Gonzaga to have had Suggs play for them. If they get the same from Chet, then we should be assured they will never take a risk on another MN kid, so there's your silver lining.

Georgetown is the head scratcher on that list

I'm not so sure about that. While they are quite different players....I could see the draw of playing for Ewing. Georgetown is a program with strong history and is on the rise.

I think the G-League might be a better place for him.

They probably have a better strength program, and he would be playing against stronger players than he would in the WCC (and in their backwards schedule). Better preparation than Gonzaga.

Perhaps Minnehaha Academy trains its students to pick schools where the competition is mediocre throughout the season. An actual P6 conference would be a better pick than playing below the curve all season.
Here's to another year where Gonzaga fails to win a national championship.

We'll see. They weren't particularly "on the rise" until they got hot in the Big East tournament. 26-44 record on the Big East four years in.

Jalen Suggs disagrees.

Go Gophers!!
3rd leading scorer on a Top 2 team that played the bulk of its schedule against double-digit underdogs. What exactly is the lasting impact of Suggs' time in Spokane? It was a great place to park for 7 months on his way to the NBA. He is not going down in the annals of CBB history as Kemba Walker.

Gonzaga had many other pieces in place. Suggs would not have taken the Gophers to the title game. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that was the point trying to be made. Take it for what it's worth.

Agree. It is likely she had a large influence on Paige

Still lost the championship....Nobody ever remembers the runner up.
I remember tons of guys that played CBB for years and made a huge impact. Garza is one. Suggs won't be known much for his exploits with the Bulldogs. There's nothing wrong with that. He's going to be fine.

He will be known for the buzzer beater against UCLA not as a champion like Tyus Jones or Khalid El-Amin

Chet to Gonzaga always made even more sense than Suggs, I think this is just about the ideal fit. He has an international feel to his game and there isn't a program more equipped to that style.

What is the meaning and purpose of sports? Without him, they don't run to the national final, which is a defining achievement for both the program and him. And the things he did in one of the greatest games in the history of the collegiate sport... That's an amazing legacy.

Personally, I don't have a lot of interest in one-and-dones. They're on the fast track and use college as a pit-stop. Nothing more. Chet falls right in line with the rest of them.

I'm more interested in players who grow with their teammates and want to represent their programs and schools. Gonzaga gets a lot of national pub and the talking heads drool over Few.

It makes sense for someone who wants to moonlight in college for a year. Get tons of love, win a bunch of games for one year and then look for those dollars.

It just doesn't build anything. And that's what the U needs. They don't need one-and-dones. They need to build a lasting foundation and they won't get it having a player like Holmgren for one year.

That's true. I guess I thought that Ewing was pulling in better classes. At least one or two top-150 guys....but still around 30-50th best classes which isn't going to turn them into a powerhouse. Does look like their 2021 class has four top-150 guys including the 20th top ranked player. Could kick off something.

And there is an entire thread on this I must have missed, lol. Sorry for the second post. I guess we can roll over our frustrated comments to my post if there is going to be so many. I expected this to happen though.

He's both a legacy and in-state, let's not go overboard on the we don't need yah.
