All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

It takes very little effort for you to do some research and realize you are wrong.

Try it sometime.

Every company is perfectly design to get the results they obtain. Changes in leadership, culture, expectations, accountability can easily change the direction of companies and programs.
True. Hire the right coach and success follows.

I should quit my job and work for a less successful company to help boost them to mediocrity per your logic.
If you really, really want to be "the man," then sometimes that's exactly what you do... If you really are "the man," you boost them past mediocrity and on to respectability or even greater heights.

When you know that you don't have it in you, maybe it is best to not quit that job...

You are wrong. Chet is a lock for the top of the NBA draft no matter where he goes to school.

Michigan could be a good fit, but who know if it would be better than the U. You have no idea how Ben will use someone like Chet in his systems at the U. You can bet that Ben and Chet (and his father) have had point blank discussions about the role that Chet would play on the team. If Chet feels comfortable about the role, has confidence in Ben, then the U would be a perfect fit.

You just assume that the U will stink based upon what other coaches have done in the past. That is like assuming that your new car will run just like the old one you traded in.
He will be a top pick no matter where he goes but only he can know where the perfect fit is for him. Perhaps Covid makes it perfect to stay home. Only he knows.

Oturo left early. Would have benefitted from another year to work on this game away from the basket. Made amazing gains from year 1 to year 2. His stock was way up at the end of his sophomore year, and today he is a Clipper, but my guess is that he would have been a first round pick this year (even though this year's draft is LOADED compared to last years limited group). You put Oturo & Liam on this year's Gopher Squad? Even after Liam & Gabe went down, that team is still making the tournament, probably round of 16
If Oturu comes back I think he and Carr have enough to get to the sweet sixteen without Liam. Oturu was incredibly efficient on both ends and could rise to the moment like Carr. Im hopeful he gets a chance to earn meaningful minutes in the NBA.

Anyways, we’ve been playing out these what ifs over and over for 8 years. Another recent example, if Coffey stayed his senior year we might have made a deep run with he, Carr, and Oturu. unfortunately neither of those scenarios happened.

Doesn’t mean Oturu and Coffey made the wrong choice for themselves, but I don’t think either of them gained anything but pride for their choice to stay home?

Prove it. I am not arguing with myself. The onus isn’t on me to prove myself wrong.

320+ teams want to be Champions. So what you are saying is that save for Baylor, everyone else wasted their time this season.

Did your company lead the nation in sales in 2020? No? Better quit your job by your logic. That's preposterous.

It is 2021. I remember every single player on the Gophers Final Four Team. They are legends. Are they Champions. No, according to the record books, that team / season never happened. But you make your mark for those that follow you.

Also, how is playing in a Sweet 16 mediocrity? How is making the round of 64 mediocrity? If you add the most talented incoming freshman to roster, odds are you are going to improve the overall quality of the team.
I get paid 100% on commission. Every dollar I make is what I earned. A good year is on me. A bad year is on me.
You said making the fourth round and losing isn’t better than being a 6 seed.
What did making the final 4 net any of those guys locally? I suppose Quincy is at the U working. The rest? Lol. Nothing! most people have no idea who any of them are.

Huh? Duke lost in the national championship game four years before Dawkins committed, and went to the Elite 8 two years before he committed.
Fair point, but I think most people would give that team credit for springing the program to what it is today. They'd been very good before that, but since then they've been near-perennial national title contenders. That's a leap.

True. Nearly always they go unnoticed.

Would you want to be just another "flavor of the week" or would you like to be the man who carried your home state's team on your back into the promised land, so to speak?

It's something Paige Bueckers is going to face as well... when she's all said and done at UConn, she's just going to be another name on the wall. Shoot, she might be second fiddle already next season... anyway, the point is, after a few years pass, who's going to remember Paige? Rebecca who? Mya who? Diana who? Paige who? Just another great that'll be replaced by the next great.

Chet can go to Gonzaga and maybe win a championship (or maybe end up crying like Suggs and Morrison.) Chet could, instead, decide to become an absolute legend in his home state. Would being a legend in MN for the rest of his life matter to Chet...? I've no clue.
"Rebecca who? Maya who? Diana who?" You just listed 3 of the all time best women's basketball players and insinuated people will forget them? I think Bueckers would be PERFECTLY fine with being listed as a nobody along those names.

Prove it. I am not arguing with myself. The onus isn’t on me to prove myself wrong.
It is really up to you to prove outlandish comments that are obviously wrong. But, since I said it was easy to do the research, here you go.... It took maybe 3 minutes...

Like what's her name the womens coach at the U. Just kidding everyone knows Lindsay Whalen.

I like Parcell's comment "The only way to change people is to tell them in the clearest possible terms what they’re doing wrong. And if they don’t want to listen, they don’t belong on the team."

I make no assumption. I have stated facts regarding why Michigan is a good fit for Chet. The only benefit for Minnesota is that his parents can watch more of his games.
It's funny how unrealistic you are.

Damn. Send this to every struggling program in the country. Then they'll have no excuse for being bad! Didn't realize it was so easy. Wonder why more programs don't do it? Maybe sell your knowledge to the bottom feeders?

True. Nearly always they go unnoticed.
I think this is true for 99% of college athletes once their career ends. Sure, some end up playing professionally or coaching locally but most just go one their way. My office has all-americans and some national champions (not basketball). 1 or 2 still have any association with the programs they competed for.
If Chet asked me I'd tell him to go where he feels most comfortable with the coaching staff to use and develop him appropriately--whatever that means to Chet.

Yeah... I had to look them up on Wikipedia. I guess I remember Maya because of the way she left the Lynx... and I read an article about how she married some guy she helped get out of prison. Anyway, I'm sure Paige will be perfectly happy being "Paige who?" With any luck it'll happen next season, when the next flavor of the week shows up. I'll give her one thing... she didn't cry when her championship dream was derailed, unlike Suggs.

That's kind of my point... Although Lindsay did have her championship-caliber run with the Lynx, too.

She also had a FF run with the Gophers, bringing that program to a level it had never seen before. I really have no idea what her opportunities were like out of HS, but Lindsay is a great example of someone who stayed home and became a legend in her own right. She wouldn’t have the same adoration with some other fan base as she has now if she’d gone elsewhere.

Exactly my point regarding Paige... and Chet, for that matter.

Yes you do make many assumptions. There are many more benefits that what you assume. It all depends what his priorities are.

Say it Chet - one for the hometown! You are an NBA draft pick no matter where you go. Going to Minnesota is more impactful than going to another team.

Here, you will be memorialized forever like Kevin McHale, and Mychal Thompson, and others.

Paige is already far better than Lindsey and known nationally on a level far beyond what she would have been here. She will have a shoe deal that sets her up. She played for a brand, a great coach and a program covered nationally. For all this legend talk, most high achievers enjoy the respect of others in their craft rather than being interrupted over dinner or the like.

Being respected and being legendary are not mutually exclusive. Lindsay is a good example of that.

Each person decides on their own. For me,no one on that '97 team is a legend. But i do think there are many ways to have a very successful season. Winning the conference and making the tourney are great and good in their own right.
That is because you are NOT a MN fan.
