All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

Seriously?
Put it this way: Why would anyone want to be a golden gopher fan? Why wouldn't you just cheer for Gonzaga? Kansas? Baylor for a year? You make choices. Joe Mauer elected to take less (a little) because being a Twin was part of his identity. Maybe Chet, like Parker Fox last week, says "Screw it. I want to represent my favorite team growing up." Like Chet, he had a ton of other options. We make such choices because the pros outweigh the cons.

In my opinion, there would be more value in playing for your childhood team, lifting them to a 6 seed, playing them into the second round, and becoming the #1 overall pick, than being the "next guy" at program X to help them to a 1 seed and lose in round 4 of the tourney. That's me. That was Oturo. He could have gone to Kansas in the middle of 12 Big 12 Championship runs. That was Humphries. He could have gone to a number of ACC teams. That was Coffey. He could have taken his talents tot he Big 12.
The players you mentioned did not win a thing. I always thought there was a chance he would come here but never knew this was his favorite team or dream school.

That’s fine if that’s what you want, but it’s a preference, not something inherently valuable.

Suggs had a nationally featured article on ESPN about how much of a legend he is in Minnesota... BEFORE he hit the shot. These guys can achieve legend status by playing on a stage other than MN. If Oturu went to Kansas, imagine the comparisons to Embiid. His national spotlight was diminished because he played for mediocre gopher teams and wasn’t the most highly touted center in the conference (Garza). Where’s the value in that?

What does Oturu think about that? That he made a mistake playing here?

I guess you will have to ask him, wouldn’t you?

edit: what about Suggs, do you think he made a mistake by not coming here?

You ok? You didn’t answer my question. I asked why anyone would want to do that. You named people who did it. Round 4 of the tourney is what—the elite 8? You act like its nothing.
I should quit my job and work for a less successful company to help boost them to mediocrity per your logic.

LOL, did you read my last line?

I am a realist, not a comic con person like yourself.
So you think some little one line disclaimer offsets the whole context of your whole message?

And saying your are a realist is just an excuse to stay with the status quo.

Changing the situation begins with believing that you can win and making it happen. Fans always look forward to the next season with eternal optimism. And players have to believe the sky is the limit in order to achieve greatness. Imagine what PJ would say to you if you worked for him and he heard you advising one of his recruits to pick another school because it is a better opportunity?

Go ahead and call me names, what ever you want. It reflects more on you than it does me.

The pitch I would always make to a player like this is that, for every elite program, there's a Johnny Dawkins who saw the potential of the situation and took the leap of faith. Dawkins is the legend of legends at Duke in my opinion, the father of his country. Do you want to be that, young man?
Huh? Duke lost in the national championship game four years before Dawkins committed, and went to the Elite 8 two years before he committed.

If that is all the impact you can make, then they do not want you.

People all the time gamble on themselves and work for shaky start-ups instead of Google or Apple. If you continually discount the impact you can make then you will never achieve anything better.

MJ, Kobe, LeBron have much more talent than most other players, but they also put in the most work to get better, to make their team better, to not accept failure, to make it happen. If does not always work, but you are guaranteed for it not to work if you do not try.

A 5’9” dude who can move very well, could.

Therefore, being 7’1” (and 130lbs) sounds like it’s irrelevant?
Correct. But you just keep changing the argument. Chet isnt 130 and he won’t be in the NBA next season. Guys can change and grow and improve. Not Gopher players but other guys.

Shitty companies almost always stay shitty. Shitty programs almost always stay shitty. There are outliers of course but the Gophers in the past 40+ years have had what—5 good seasons? Not .500 but challenge for a conference title type of season. That isn’t even mediocrity. Its simply shitty.

Well that's not very genuine. Yes, the Humphries era was a trainwreck season. But, Coffey & Oturo helped house Louisville. Then, the centerpiece of their team, Jordan Murphy, couldn't walk in their matchup versus Michigan State in round 2. Who knows what happens if not for that piece of bad luck. Pop Quiz: If Murphy plays 32 minutes in that MSU game and the team goes to the Sweet 16, do you really think Pitino is in New Mexico today? Me neither.

Oturo left early. Would have benefitted from another year to work on this game away from the basket. Made amazing gains from year 1 to year 2. His stock was way up at the end of his sophomore year, and today he is a Clipper, but my guess is that he would have been a first round pick this year (even though this year's draft is LOADED compared to last years limited group). You put Oturo & Liam on this year's Gopher Squad? Even after Liam & Gabe went down, that team is still making the tournament, probably round of 16

320+ teams want to be Champions. So what you are saying is that save for Baylor, everyone else wasted their time this season.

Did your company lead the nation in sales in 2020? No? Better quit your job by your logic. That's preposterous.

It is 2021. I remember every single player on the Gophers Final Four Team. They are legends. Are they Champions. No, according to the record books, that team / season never happened. But you make your mark for those that follow you.

Also, how is playing in a Sweet 16 mediocrity? How is making the round of 64 mediocrity? If you add the most talented incoming freshman to roster, odds are you are going to improve the overall quality of the team.

Pop quiz does not include if or maybe. My answer would be he should have been in NM long ago. Besides, it is players deciding where to go and why,not me.

Each person decides on their own. For me,no one on that '97 team is a legend. But i do think there are many ways to have a very successful season. Winning the conference and making the tourney are great and good in their own right.

Being a Gopher fan, and for the immediate future, finishing 500 would be a successful season.

This coming year does not even need to be .500 for me as i will be looking for something else in the process of building.

Am I wrong in my assessment?
Take off your homer glasses and look at this with the best interest for Chet's basketball career. If you did, you would see how Michigan is a perfect place for Chet in his one year college career.

The Zags assist. coach who was likely recruiting Chet since he was a super recruiter away from the west coast just resigned yesterday and took the Arizona HC position. Maybe BJ better go harder for Chet now. However two 7' centers have entered the transfer portal to leave Gonzaga, maybe they knew he was leaving and didn't want to stay. Maybe Few isn't good recruiting/coaching centers?
Go Gophers.

With kids being able to play a year me then go somewhere else the commitment is finished but still if he chose the u. Best hs school player at his position that I ever saw.

It takes very little effort for you to do some research and realize you are wrong.

Try it sometime.

Every company is perfectly design to get the results they obtain. Changes in leadership, culture, expectations, accountability can easily change the direction of companies and programs.

You are wrong. Chet is a lock for the top of the NBA draft no matter where he goes to school.

Michigan could be a good fit, but who know if it would be better than the U. You have no idea how Ben will use someone like Chet in his systems at the U. You can bet that Ben and Chet (and his father) have had point blank discussions about the role that Chet would play on the team. If Chet feels comfortable about the role, has confidence in Ben, then the U would be a perfect fit.

You just assume that the U will stink based upon what other coaches have done in the past. That is like assuming that your new car will run just like the old one you traded in.

Chet is not a center, he is a unicorn.

Would you want to be a star among stars or the best player on a mediocre team?
Would you want to be just another "flavor of the week" or would you like to be the man who carried your home state's team on your back into the promised land, so to speak?

It's something Paige Bueckers is going to face as well... when she's all said and done at UConn, she's just going to be another name on the wall. Shoot, she might be second fiddle already next season... anyway, the point is, after a few years pass, who's going to remember Paige? Rebecca who? Mya who? Diana who? Paige who? Just another great that'll be replaced by the next great.

Chet can go to Gonzaga and maybe win a championship (or maybe end up crying like Suggs and Morrison.) Chet could, instead, decide to become an absolute legend in his home state. Would being a legend in MN for the rest of his life matter to Chet...? I've no clue.
