2021-2022 Roster

Whatever the roster may be, I don't see next year being a good year for the Gophers. 12-14 place in the BIG. We sort of knew this might happen, anyways. When your best player next year will probably be Liam Robbins or Gabe you know you're in trouble. If for whatever reason Dawson Garcia opts out of Marquette (I doubt it) and comes here, then maybe we are talking about a bubble team at best. The Gophers opted to rebuild under Ben Johnson and could have had Eric Musselman, who would have taken at least three transfers with him from Arkansas. Instant Sweet 16 team under Muss. I still am puzzled. The roster next year will be a disaster piece as will the team.
They could've? I highly doubt it and highly doubt u would've spent the money to get him even if he did want too

So is the team going to be made up of the guys on the Women's Scout team, or will it be the A League champions of intramurals?
Yeah he is just going to be looking at the intramural champions to fill out the roster. Some of you have less patience than the teenagers I teach.

I can actually remember a Gopher team that had to play with like 5 program players and maybe some guys from the football team. I think they beat a top team at Williams Arena that day. I'm pretty sure Tim Hanson, who played basketball with Chet's dad at Prior Lake was on the team. John Shasky was the center. They had a good guard too...Wilson? I could look it up, but I'm sure we will have enough other posters who could fill in the gaps.

Currently, he would have to sit out. The covid transfer rule is for guys who have not transferred before.

But.......we know the NCAA and how they handle transfers. Not exactly consistent.
Well, he could always request another waiver. No idea how likely they would grant it.

How is it not a reflection on Johnson? He thinks Johnson is the greatest coach in the world, but he just doesn't want to play for him? What kind of mental gymnastics is this?
Maybe Johnson defined how he sees his role and he wants to check other things out. Maybe he’d already made up his mind he wants to try something else, and now just following through on that. Who knows? It doesn’t mean he doesn’t see Johnson as a quality coach, it just may not fit between what he wants and what coach is offering, or the U is offering.

Gabe's got a year left of college basketball (two if he wants to take advantage of the COVID year), if he wants to be on a good team before he's out of eligibility, it would be smart for him to look around because it's likely going to take Johnson a couple years at least to get things going. Think that would have been the case for any coach honestly. Even before the guys jumped in the portal, there wasn't much upside with the underclassmen group.

Let's see....

~4500 D1 MBB players.
~1000 MBB players in the portal. (I assume they are all D1?)

About 22%.

Seems like anybody who isn't 100% solid in their situation is in the portal.

I don't know if there is a program more fluid right now than the Gophers.

Get some coaching established and panties will get out of their twist.

Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but I noticed that Ihnen lists himself as a small forward on Twitter. I wonder if that’s something he discussed with Johnson, since he played the four most of last year this could potentially affect roster construction.

That's fine put Battle at the 4.
Starting lineup

G Gach
SF Ihnen
PF Johnson/Battle

I like this 5 actually haha (I get we need a PG and bench..) They're may be a lot of Gach doubters but I am not ready to give up on him. He's definitely got the talent just needs somebody help him reach that full potential. Could say the same for Ihnen of course too. Hopefully Johnson (and assistants) can help bring that out.

A line-up that has a fighting chance to finish 10th and avoid Weakling Wednesday. Nothing more.

Gabe going in the portal is just like my wife going out clothes shopping. She'll try on this outfit and that outfit and then that outfit over there, and she'll admire herself in the mirror and the sales ladies will say how great she looks, but she doesn't have to buy anything. At the end of the day she knows she can still put on the clothes she was wearing before.

Yeah, I'd expect a 11th/12th place finish with a lineup like that next year. Luckily, I believe Ben will assemble talent to form a starting 5 better than that. I can't imagine its his goal to have Gach or Ihnen in the starting lineup next year.

I don't mind all the roster turnover. Feels like a fresh start and hopefully a brand new culture. We don't need to be that good year 1, just looking for some positives IMO. Battle, Johnson, Robbins, and Ihen is an extremely solid front court though. Add a couple quality guards and these guys will be competitive.

Do you think there's a reasonable chance to hope for something better next year, honestly?

Way too hard to tell. Every single team is going to look so different in the Big Ten. No clue who will be good, average, horrible until this transfer mess is sorted.

I thought we would really struggle in Pitino's first year and we were 1 game out of the NCAA's then won the NIT. I think top 10 is doable if we get the right pieces.

They have 8 open spots. You can't project an opening line up based on what we know now. Robbins is your starting center, Battle either at 3, same with Johnson at 4. Guard is wide open and they will need probably 4 guards at least from the portal.

I also think Tyree Ihenacho would be a great get. Big guard with crazy quickness and only a Sophmore.

Right now we have:

PG Luke Leowe
SG Both Gach
SF Jamison Battle
PF Isiah Ihnen
C Liam Robbins

or has Robbins even committed to returning? We have a long way to go!

The timing is certainly odd. I could totally understand it if he had gone in the portal before the hire. Doing it after is a little iffy. That said, I agree with others who think he might want to see if he can find a team with some better prospects for next year given that he is near the end of his college career.

Hopefully in the end he ends up back with the Gophers as he can add some stability to the roster. Going to be a rough year no matter what but hopefully they can put something together that at least gives the team the chance to compete most nights and maybe finish somewhere around the middle of the pack in the BIG.

If Gach is relied on to log major minutes, the off-season has gone horribly wrong.

He was pretty good at Utah, right? And last I checked, the PAC seemed to be pretty formidable in the tournament?

I still think something was just very off with him this year. Hoping for the best.

He did have surgery on his foot right after the season ended, that could have had a greater impact than we realized. Looking for him to come back more confident this year for sure.

So to update:

Outgoing:
Carr
Tre Williams
Mashburn
Curry
Freeman
M. Mitchell

Staying:
Gach
Ihnen
Thompson (?)

TBD:
Gabe
Robbins
Johnson
Pohto

Incoming:
Battle
Loewe
Stephens

So we have between 3 and 7 open scholarships at the moment.

Agreed. Hopefully last year was a wash for Gach and we can see his upside these next two years.

I think getting to be around his family this summer will do tons to lighten his load and help him get back to where he was at Utah.

From the prep article I read about him, would be cool to see a contingent from Austin come up to cheer him on for some Saturday tilts as well!
