GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

Sure. I believe all the other things trump hes black

If coyle felt he could've got muss or other home run white guy, he would've.

Mn gets hammered for losing local kids, so he hired a guy highly respected by local basketball community
Coyle absolutely could have gotten Mussy. He would have loved to come here and fire his dad's legacy up again. That said, Coyle doesn't write the checks and I'm guessing that was a check no one at the U was willing to sign.

Yup.

Coyle taking risk and banking on his local connections. I have no idea if it'll work, but he's got my full support.

I have no issue with people concerned by lack of experience

I have issue with saying he's an unqualified diversity hire.

Those are two separate items
He is way under qualified and he is a diversity hire. He is also our coach and I fully support him!

Your statement he has no resume is bullshit.

People saying he's only hired due being black is an insult

As I said, calling it as I see it. Have a good one
#1: He doesn't have the resume for this job. That's crystal clear to everyone (except you). Even his biggest supporters are saying he is hired despite not having a resume for the job.

#2: I never said that and I've told you multiple times I've never said. You know I didn't say that. You've made my point. You're afraid of reality so you make stuff up to try to guilt people into agreeing with you.

I never said he was ONLY hired because he was black. I am saying he wouldn't have been hired if he wasn't black. There is a difference there. I hope you're pretending to be too stupid to see the difference. Lets try one that won't send you into an hysteria. He also would not have been hired if he wasn't local. That does not mean he was ONLY hired because he was local.

Then again, you know all of this. You're just running from reality and pretending to not follow. It's okay, you can always fall back on guilt-tripping people.

Again, whatever helps you sleep at night.

I'm sorry his qualifications don't meet your requirements.

One box this hiring definitely does not check is the fan excitement box. I too am underwhelmed by this, and was hoping for one of the several names thrown out from existing coaches. I hope as much as Gopher fan Johnson succeeds, but given I don't think there will be a bump in interest or attendance, I think there could be more pressure on him within a couple years than a coach with more experience.

If he didn't have money, that means he couldn't have gotten him.

Well, this refutes the general rule that organizations always go with the opposite qualities with the next hire. Was sure we'd hire an experienced head coach after Pitino's 8 years of on the job training didn't pan out.

I heard KFAN on the way home from work talking about how they were excited for the Gophers having an African American coach and breaking through with that. I assumed they had hired Gates and was minorly disappointed (I wanted Smith).

Buddy texted me a couple minutes later asking what I thought of Ben Johnson...

For what it's worth I had a buddy who worked with the team for a couple years under Pitino when Johnson was on staff. He thinks he absolutely can recruit and for sure will get kids to come here. He's just not sure he's a head coach. Might be too nice of a guy. Preaching patience to me.
I've seen him interviewed, and that's one of my concerns, too: laid back guy.

His qualifications are extremely low for a major conference job. Correct?

How it Started: "We'll conduct a national search!" "We have a B1G level budget for this hire."

How it's going: "We hired an assistant from a school that didn't make the tournament. We didn't bother to interview anyone who did make the tournament. We'll pay him half of what we paid the last coach."
Pretty good summary.

His first recruiting test will be keeping Robbins on the roster. Also getting nearly 2M in salary seems kinda high.

This makes zero fucking sense. It’s depressing. Also some of the comments in here are embarrassing.

As we're on page 28 you may have missed my take

Coyle knows there's pressure to win and get more minnesota kids stay home. Tyus/Suggs/Chet probably not, garcia/wright/etc you need to keep more of. He went with obtainable guy with local recruiting connections and respected by local community

No buyout to school, minority, were bonuses but not reason.

And with that I'm out of the thread, nothing left to say.

If Bueckers wins four titles at UCONN and the Lady Gophers don't at least win a big ten title then we can expect to see a new women's coach soon.
Can't really blame Whalen for missing on her. Paige had built a relationship with UCONN long before Lindsay was hired. Same reason you won't be able to blame Ben Johnson for not landing Chet Holmgren.
