Hole Poll: What grade would you give Mark Coyle in his decision to hire Ben Johnson as the Gophers coach?
 












I am shocked by this decision and don't instinctually think it's the right hire.

That being said, I think quite highly of Ben and hope that he just absolutely runs away with this thing and becomes legendary. It'd be an awfully nice situation and story for the Gophers if he does.

For sentimental reasons, I'm gonna take the D- away and give him a very hopeful C.
 


I'll continue to support the program and hope Ben succeeds. But on paper it's an F.
 




I just can't. I'll watch the first 10 games of next season and make my judgement based off of that.

He will NOT bring in top MN recruits until he shows he can develop players and win some games
 


I haven't read all the comments, but was this guy brought in because Coyle tried to save a few bucks?

Who possibly would want him to crash and burn? There is a difference between what you want and what you think the most likely outcome is.
 






As of today this is an F.

Johnson will get plenty of time to prove he can raise the grade.
 



Having positive Gopher fans truly helps in the recruiting process. Unfortunately we have knee jerk fans here. People didn't like the Kill hire, the Fleck hire and so forth. Loved the Tubby and Haskin's hire and what did that get us? Probation and losing seasons.

With zero experience as a HC at any level and we all know it took years for Pitino to learn on the job...look how that turned out.

So when the program is still bad in three years you will be blaming the fans that questioned the hire as the reason?..ok
 

There's a great line in the movie "The Right Stuff." Reporter: "Are you saying you don't want the best pilots?" NASA official: "No. We want the best pilots -- that we can get."
 

Solid B at this point. Lots of positives, but some uncertainties too.
