GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

The Strib runs an article about whether or not Coyle would hire an assistant with no head coaching experience... and some minor-league ESPN affiliated blogger tweets something about it... and everyone is freaking out.

Black has nothing to do with it, Ben Johnson can coach, people usually love the HE IS one of us MANTRA. I like Ben Johnson as a player, I don't understand the hate, head coaches have to start somewhere and XAVIER, is a good basketball school.
Coaches usually start at a smaller program. We just had a coach who basically got all his experience here and it didn't work.

Xavier has not been that good recently.

I guess I don't hate it. He better hire some experience assistant coaches and keep Conroy ( or whatever his name is).

Underwhelmed to say the least, but won't you guys at least give the guy a year or two before cancelling tix? Honest question.
My tickets are $1540. Doesn’t include parking obviously. So let’s say an even $1700. So they can hire a discount coach with no head coaching experience? Not like we can’t get them back. Season ticket base is dead.

Wow, what a disappointing hire. Is there anyone on the board that is happy with this hire???

Kfan saying aau circles wanted Ben and now it's on them if they send their kids to Minnesota. We need to chase Dawson Garcia now and try to reel back in Mashburn and/or Carr. One last run at Chet, maybe get Hercy Miller. I'm optimistic with the hire

Very, very, very underwhelming hire based on the other names being thrown around. Even if he is a good recruiter, which seems questionable based on how the UMN and Xavier teams he coached performed, is there any indication he can actually coach? Nowhere he’s been has had success seems like.

Only saving grace here is that Coyle seemed to want him, and Coyle has done a nice job of picking revenue coaches so far.

Head coaches with zero head coaching experience don't walk into Power 5 head coaching jobs. They get their HC start at smaller schools. Giant failure on Coyle's part.

I like Ben Johnson... From the beginning, I wanted the Gophers to bring home Brian Dutcher and also bring back Ben Johnson as a top assistant...

Never really thought it was a possibility that Ben would come back as the head coach, though. While it surely isn't my first choice, I wouldn't loose my shit over it.

So is Holmgren a possibility? Landing a local like that right away would go along way to showing this has a basis in logic. The easiest way to win us over seems to bring in the big Minnesota fish right away.
No.

This is only a head scratcher if you don't know how AAU connections drive recruiting.
If the only thing we are trying to do is bow down to AAU coaches, then I guess we made the right hire. If this is how it works, and coaches/parents are willing to hold their kids hostage unless you hire one of the guys they like, then I'd prefer we hire a guy that can recruit elsewhere and give the AAU people a big middle finger. And I've been one saying we need to sign more local kids.

We ain't getting Holmgren now. These local kids want to play for a proven coach.

Exactly. If they're going to hire a discount coach, do we now get a discount on tickets, too?
