WOW. They didn't make the NCAA Tourney. Providence make the field over Minnesota. Providence was the last at large team. Gophers run of NCAA appearances ands at 13.

That's tough for the woman. I doubt that Providence had a schedule like the they did. League clearly getting tougher with Wisconsin always tough and now Ohio State creeping up towards the top as well.

Can't say I'm surprised or even disappointed. Stated frankly, this team took 3 or 4 steps back from previous seasons. They simply weren't very good and have nobody to blame but themselves for not making the NCAAs.

There's a lot of growing up to do with Gopher women's hockey at the moment.

An argument can be made the gophers deserved to go over Duluth. Plus the fact that two hockey east teams made it in over having 4 WCHA teams is a joke. 3 of the 5 people that drives the bracket were the AD of Duluth, the Boston College coach, and the hockey easy commissioner, so there could have been some self serving interests. Providence had no business being in the field, but the committee didn’t want to have another gopher badger game.

I also agree that there is a lot of work to be done.

Mark Coyle should be searching for 3 new coaches - I think women's hockey and wrestling are as disappointing as the mens basketball program. Women's hockey and wrestling should be competing for national championships, not be also rans. Women's hockey team has the talent - losing all the games to Wisconsin is inexcusable and can only be attributed to the coaching. Wrestling team does not recruit to be able to compete with Iowa or Penn State - that needs to be fixed with a new coach.

I agree. The women’s hockey team should NEVER miss the tournament. They probably should have been selected because they are better than Duluth and probably Providence, but you can’t just play like you did this year getting dominated by Wisconsin and expect to waltz into the tournament. I would love to see the OSU coach and former Gopher be our new coach.

Who is that? (I’m not up on women’s hockey). Any background would be great. Thanks in advance!

Really good read... the way I read it is the Bulldogs benefited from only playing Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio state twice each during the season. Unlike the gophers who played Wisconsin and Ohio stare 10 times this year.

Its called equity of outcome.

There are teams in the tournament that I think the Gophers are better than, but if you finish fourth in a seven team conference, I don't think you should be blaming the committee.

Disappointing season, but surprised to hear people calling for the coach's firing. The guy has won four national titles, four conference tournaments, and five conference championships. It's going to take a lot more than one missed tournament for me to want to move on from him.

I don’t follow the program as much as many, but what I see is the development of other parts of the country at the high school level catching up to Minnesota. We don’t have the dominant Wendells and others others. Coaching will determine how far they can advance in the future.

They played the 2nd and 3rd rated teams a total of 10 times during conference play and then played Wisconsin again in the frozen face off. That’s a pretty difficult schedule.

For comparison Duluth only played Minnesota, Ohio state, and Wisconsin 7 times. Duluth had been behind Minnesota in the polls all year and still are. Minnesota also beat Duluth head to head their one series of the year.

the fact that the AD for Duluth was on the committee and they made it into the tournament was a joke.

then you look at providence and they are 9th in the polls and 11th in the RPI. Minnesota is 8th in the RPI and Duluth is 12th in the RPI.
Given all this you can’t feel that there was some motivation from the committee to keep Minnesota out of the tournament based on personal bias or affiliation all motivation.

I don't disagree that we should have made it, I just think we didn't play well enough to cry foul that we were left out Being number 8 RPI (USCHO actually has us at 7) and number 4 in conference (even with the unbalanced schedule) is not the kind of performance that screams "mortal lock." If we had managed to do better than 0-4-1 against UW or 2-4 against OSU, we probably aren't having this conversation. If we had won two games at the WCHA tournament, we definitely wouldn't be. When you don't play well enough on the ice to leave no room for debate, then you are at the mercy of the process.

I feel the same way about the men's team. I think the B1G system of win % is less equitable than point %, but I am not going to complain about it, because we were in a fight with Wisconsin, and Wisconsin took 3 of 4 from us (including 2 thumpings in our own building). Win one more of those games, and we are B1G champs under either system.

I remember being a young kid complaining about the refs on a drive home from a youth hockey game I played in. My dad turned to me and said "when you play a perfect game, and there is nothing left for you to improve, but you still lose, that's when its time to start talking about the refs." That always stuck with me.

Agree, they could have played better against the BADgers and Ohio state. They just seemed to be missing something this year, not that I watched more that the 4 games against the badgers.

Watched them a fair amount this season and I can unequivocally say they were the worst women's team I've ever seen the program put together. Made silly mistakes a lot of the time and were often out-hustled, out-fought and out-played by the opposition. Simply put, they weren't very good.

They had noticeable lulls in virtually every game I watched where they simply switched off and stopped playing with intensity or focus, which is frankly unacceptable considering the supposed level of talent they have on the roster.

People can gnash their teeth about the snub if they choose, but I'm hoping the team takes a hard look in the mirror and steps it up in every way next season.

Agreed on all points.
