Nov. 4: Gophers throttle Iowa, wind up in the Rose Bowl

Gophers football players celebrated their decisive 27-10 victory over No. 1 Iowa on Nov. 5, 1960. The Gophers earned the national championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
Coach Murray Warmath had been hung in effigy on campus at the conclusion the Gophers' 2-7 season in 1959. A year later, the No. 3 Gophers and No. 1 Iowa were both 6-0 and attracting a record crowd of 65,610 to Memorial Stadium.

Tom Brown tipped over the Iowa center and won the Outland Trophy. Sandy Stephens led the victory and became the first Black quarterback to be an All-America pick.

And Roger Hagberg, the Rochester fullback, steamed 42 yards for a touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter to clinch a 27-10 victory.

There was an upset loss to Purdue, but a throttling of Wisconsin in the finale gave the Gophers the coveted trip to a Rose Bowl. Plus, the wire-service voting took place at the end of the regular season, and the Gophers stand eternally as national champs for that season.

All because of that afternoon when Murray went from an effigy to being served a large helping of what he termed "Hawkeye pie."

The Twins, the Vikings and the Gophers (baseball and football) were ready to host celebrations in 2020, in honor of the huge happenings that took place in Minnesota's sports world 60 years ago. Edgerton's Dutchmen would have been extolled once again. Then came COVID-19, the 60-year celebrations...

Greatest Gopher game I ever attended - toward the end a chant picked up and began to spread - couldn't quite make it out, then it became clear, "We're number one, we're number one." Prior to the game, Iowa #1 in both polls, Gophers #2 in one, #3 in the other. Media attendance was the biggest in history and the game was carried by Armed Forces radio world-wide. Sports Illustrated did a masterful story the following week, saying the game eclipsed the Kennedy-Nixon election.

I remember listening to the game with my Dad and our neighbor who was the Mom of former Gopher great, Phil McElroy. We listened to WCCO with play-by-play being done by Dick Enroth and color by Halsey Hall. What a wonderful day that was .

Gophs did a throwback pretty close to that in the last 10 years...think it was based on 1967?
