Surprised to not see a starting five trail yet.
Likely because it is pretty cut and dry with Carr, Gabe, Both, Johnson and Liam.

Ihnen could break into the starting lineup as well or could be a great sixth man?

It will be interesting to see how Pitino handles this? Thoughts

Mashburn will be one of the first guys off bench
 

I think Ihnen should start over Johnson. His perimeter shooting combined with Gabe's would be massive for major minutes.

It was just a scrimmage but with limited practice time and a game Wednesday I’d think you play with your first unit? That was Curry at the 4.
Few of us wouldn’t do it that way but at least it must be added to the possibilities.
6th man depends who doesn’t start but Ihnen and Mashburn should get lots of minutes if coach is being straight with us Mashburn.
10 guys need minutes. Will it happen?
 

Depends what you mean by "6th man". Just based off which bench guy gets the most minute's i will guess Johnson or ihnen. Mash may be the most talented bench guy but with stalwarts in Carr/Gabe, I think there is less time and production available there than at the PF/C spot

And less likely to be foul trouble with the guards.
 



The 6th man should be Ihnen or Johnson - - whichever one is not starting.
 

Certainly doesn’t have to be, but often it’s a guard. I know not in the NBA, Kevin McHale et al but often times. Generally, you want your 6th man to contribute points, change tempo, be disruptive defensively, drain threes or somehow give your team a kickstart. I don’t know enough about Johnson to be sure but he seems more steady than flashy ala Mashburn or Ihnen
Philosophy of many coaches, back to McHale as an example, your 6th man is one of your better players. He comes off the bench to pour it on or stem the tide. First time maybe, Richard has had the opportunity to really use a talented guy as a weapon off the bench?
I’d say first subs should be two guys. We gotta get these guys on the floor.
 


I've covered a couple of teams over the years who's 6th man was a defensive specialist who could guard any of the 3 perimeter positions. His main job was the put the clamps on the other teams hot hand for a few minutes to break their rhythm. Helps if you have a guy with some length and the quick feet needed to stay close to a point guard and who takes more pride in getting stops than getting shots up.

One of the guys I remember, was also capable of knocking down a 3 when needed, but the other guy i remember from 10 years ago, couldn't shoot a lick. However, the 2nd guy was one of the best at giving 20 minutes of holding the other teams weapon to a 1 for 8 with 3 turnovers, so it was worth it.
 



Are we going to see the return of Tubby-style line changes? Hit 'em with 8 minutes of Carr/Kaleschur/Gach/Curry/Robbins, only to pivot into 4 minutes of Mashburn/Mutaf/Ihnen/Johnson/Omersa? They'll never see it coming.
 

I think Tre Williams will give some really good minutes off the bench and may push Gabe for a starting spot

So who'd gonna be upset with their role and jump ship? Going to start happening fast if we don't win right away.

Yeah, he looks way better than 2018-19 Curry.
 

knowing who to substitute and when to substitute is a huge ability for a coach.

I understand that each opponent is different, and different styles can impact substitution patterns, or whether the other team is going "big" or "small." Foul trouble can also blow up the rotation in a hurry.

but, having said that, I tend to prefer a more set or regular substitution pattern or rotation - so that all of the players know their roles and know what is expected from them. if a guy is getting 10 minutes one game and 3 minutes the next game, some guys can handle that, but other guys will get bent out of shape.

And FWIW, I did not mind Tubby's "line changes."

Lol, the two parts in bold are two comments that I 100 agree with (Knowing who to sub) and 100 disagree with (Line changes). Then again I've been pretty supportive of Pitino's minutes and usage on here compared to others.
 

Johnson's video is impressive. I did notice there was no defensive shown or passing. If he had some great highlights in those two areas I'm sure they would have been included.

He certainly could be an instant offense guy though. Might be a great 6th man. Should never start the five best shooters. I'm a big fan of your sixth man coming in and shooting often to add a spark..

While I agree having instant offense off the bench is a major asset. That requires a unique individual with an "Elite" level of confidence in their stroke. Having a "Microwave" come in off the bench is highly desired and not easily achieved.

I’d think Ihnen and Mashburn are both quite adept at this type of a role...
