2022 Recruiting

Great get ! Ranked # 45 nationally and Whalen is on a roll.

Where do you see #45 nationally?

Looks like here: https://www.prepgirlshoops.com/2022-rankings

Heyer and Holloway are ranked 36 and 45 respectively. Only Minnesotans ranked higher are Nnaji, Braun & Battle at 7, 21 & 29 respectively.

Holloway looked impressive on the video. Very active, agile and lots of energy. Don't know if she can shoot the 3 to help keep things spread out when she is on the court but she seemed to have nice touch from midrange.

Doogie interviews Mallory.

Chaska junior Mallory Heyer talked to KSTP Sports about her recent commitment to play for the Gophers women's basketball team. Before her junior season begins, she's already topped 1,000 career points.

Heyer is also a standout player for the Minnesota Fury AAU program, and dominates for Chaska's volleyball team.

She chose the Gophers over Utah, Iowa, Iowa State, and other high-major programs.

Brianna McDaniel, 5’10 G, Kenwood Academy (IL) ESPN Ranked #30 announced her top 15 schools.

Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan State, Clemson, Georgia, Louisville, Texas, Maryland, Florida, Miami, Mississippi State, Duke

I would love to get Braun to join this class. How many scholarships are available for 2022?

There are no current scholarships available for 2022 with the recent verbals of Mallory Heyer and Nia Holloway.

If the Gophers get immediate eligibility for Kayla Mershon, that would open up a spot. I have not read if they have applied for a waiver. But it seems like the NCAA is approving more of them this season.

Holloway to stay home, verbally accepts U of M scholarship

Here is a joint virtual interview with Mallory and Nia.

Here is a list for the remaining 2022 with known offers. The Gophers may not still be actively recruiting some of them but these are the ones who have not publically excluded the gophers (to my knowledge) and had an offer.

Offered/In-state:

Amaya Battle
-Hopkins-Hopkins-5’11 Guard

Mara Braun-Wayzata-5’9 Guard

Out of State Offers:

Ayanna Patterson,
6’3 W, Fort Wayne HS (IN) ESPN Ranked #3

Brianna McDaniel, 5’10 G, Kenwood Academy (IL) ESPN Ranked #30

(Top 15: Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan State, Clemson, Georgia, Louisville, Texas, Maryland, Florida, Miami, Mississippi State, Duke)

Alyssa Crockett, 6’2 W, Westfield HS (IN) ESPN Ranked #36

Emily LaChapell, 5’11 W, Appleton East (WI)

Aaliyah Smith, 5’5 PG, Verona HS (WI)

Acacia Hayes, 5’7 PG, Riverdale HS (TN)

Heard rumblings that Braun and Battle have cut their lists but nothing official or public has been seen so assuming both are high on Gopher's wish list

Thanks for posting this interview. This is one of the things I really enjoy about GH. Lol, Mike Peden needs to make his opening ? shorter and make your bed! Looking forward to watching both of them @ the U. Go Gophers !

Mara reminds me of Amy Dilk and Doyle..

been waiting and waiting for the Gophers to get a big guard like one of those two.. IMPRESSIVE get for Lindsay and Co.

they are SLOWLY closing the boarders

Nice to see someone choose the gophers over Maryland and Oregon State.

"I was going to wait a little longer to make a decision," Braun said in a phone interview. "But, with COVID-19 happening I wasn't able to visit some other schools. Ultimately it got down to knowing where I wanted to go. It was time to call coach [Whalen] and commit. I saw an opportunity to stay home and play in front of friends."

This is a trend. Whalen's 2021 class already includes Roseau guard Katie Borowicz and Watertown-Mayer guard Maggie Czinano. The 2022 class includes Minnesotans Holloway and Chaska star Mallory Heyer.

For a good indication of how well-regarded she is, consider Braun's final top-six list: Minnesota, Arizona State, Michigan, Oregon State, Maryland and Iowa.

"I told Lindsay that Mara was upstairs saying no to the 14th-, 15th- and 19-ranked teams in the country," Chris Braun said of a conversation with Whalen. "Coach Whalen is awesome. And the staff, they're good people. It's going to be great."

This is awesome! Congratulations to Mara and the Gophers!

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about Gopher WBB recruits in a long time! I love that there are so many Minnesota kids committing! Braun is good! I had no idea how good she was until I watched video of her playing Hopkins. Wow I am just so excited for this class!

This is fantastic news ! Whalen will continue to make strides forward in recruiting the best in the state.
