Nebraska's state AG threatens Big Ten -- time to kick Nebraska out !!

Nebraska attorney general notifies Big Ten that it appears to be out of compliance with state nonprofit act

The office of Doug Peterson on Friday issued a letter to the Big Ten notifying Commissioner Kevin Warren that the conference appears to be out of compliance with the Nebraska Nonprofit Corporation Act. According to a news release from Peterson's office, the attorney general is responsible for overseeing compliance with the act by nonprofits operating in the state.

Peterson has instructed Big Ten officials to provide documents and records to determine if they've operated in compliance with Nebraska law and their own governing documents.

"In order to receive the advantages to operate as a nonprofit organization in Nebraska, it is imperative that the organization operate with complete transparency regarding its decision-making process," Peterson said in the news release. "Nebraskans expect transparency from nonprofits in this state, and the Big Ten Conference is no exception."
 


Not a lawyer, so I have no idea on the contractual obligations between Nebraska and the B1G. But I suspect that kicking a team out of the conference - or a team choosing to leave a conference - is going to involve a room full of lawyers pouring over every line in the agreements and by-laws.

As a practical matter, no conference wants to have an odd number of teams. So - hypothetically - if NEB goes, then another team has to go, or the B1G has to bring in a different team to replace NEB.

As a traditionalist, it still grates on me that the Big Ten has 14 teams. But, I have grown to accept the two-division setup, and the financial implications of having a conference championship game.

So bottom line, if NEB goes, then the B1G either has to get rid of another team and go down to 12 teams, or find a replacement to stay at 14.

Swap for Iowa State.

That's the easiest. Would be a huge upgrade in all aspects, geography, academics, and football & men's basketball.

Lose BTN being on cable/satellite main tiers in the state of Nebraska .... maybe in KC and Denver as well (this hasn't been confirmed).

Jim Delaney lost his mind near the end of his tenure. Notre Dame (somehow) should have been the 12th team. For crying out loud, even Louisville would have ben better than Nebraska. Maryland and Rutgers...dont get me started.

IMO - that was a strategic move for the East Coast TV market - very unlikely that BTN would have been carried by East Coast TV suppliers at that point unless there were teams that made it desirable to do so.

Two caveats -

Obviously much has changed with TV broadcasting since then.

ND will always choose to remain football independent as they are a true national program and have their own TV deal with NBC; as soon as it is save to do so, they will leave the ACC and go back to being football independent.

I love the suggestion of Iowa State - make sense on so many levels and they are a comer where Nebby is fading into the sunset.

Notre Dame was refusing to lose it's independent football status and/or profit share. That's a non-starter. No Big Ten team gets special treatment or gets to make demands. The reason Nebraska wanted out of the Big 12 (other than for $$$) was because Longhorns lorded over that conference. And at the time....Nebraska was still a prestigious football program. I thought it made sense and still do. But in hindsight....they were an average addition....now that they've become a middling program and they lost their AAU status.

Louisville would have been a solid addition too. If we moved on from Nebraska....they'd be an attractive replacement. Mizzou would still work. West Virginia or Cincinnati wouldn't be bad either.

In hindsight, Missouri was the correct decision.

Delaney got sold on the idea that the Huskers would return to national contender status. Has never happened and clearly never will.

Considering Nebraska has the full support of Ohio State, on this matter no chance of that. Ohio State is the straw that stirs the drink in the Big Ten.

Ohio State doesn’t scare me. Let them leave too, if they want to be SEC.
 

Nice drive by Iowa State. I’d take them in a second over small red.
 

Their fear of, and failure to compete at the top level of the B1G has never been more apparent. Somewhere along the line in the last 10 years, they have developed a huge inferiority complex.


Let them move to the MAC so they can win and crow all they want (except vs Akron).

The AG sent a letter... we will see if he wants to do more than grandstanding.
 


I doubt the B1G would ever again invite a school to join that doesn’t add televisions to their footprint. Iowa State will not do that.
 


The way Iowa State and Kansas State opened their seasons, Nebraska would fit right back into the Big12 and maybe even be competitive.
