Covid-19 hospitalizations in US have been increasing daily since mid June.

Someone should invent a drinking game with the phrase "moving the goal posts".

I think it's a stupid phrase/analogy anyway. The NFL used to have the goal posts right on the goal line. They moved them to the back of the end zone because WRs & DB could knock themselves out by running into them and the kicking game had evolved.

"Moving the goal posts" could be an absolutely reasonable decision based on new information or changing circumstances.

If it's a single play and everyone in the world is a Vikings fan (as I assume everyone in the world is in favor of defeating Covid), then I would have been in complete favor of moving the goal posts to the left before Blair Walsh kicked that FG against the Seahawks.

To avoid a left/right political bias I would be just as in favor of moving the posts to the right before Gary Anderson's boot vs the Falcons.

Kind of depends where you're at. Things are bad in Phoenix and Houston with ICU's at or above capacity. Here in Sarasota, ICU beds occupied by Covid set a record yesterday at Sarasota Memorial, our biggest hospital. Exceeded April numbers. So, we'll see.

and these numbers can be verified by the ICU's that you mention? I'd like to see it. There's some confusion by the information that is real and the information that is politicized. I'm sorry....with all that has happened...not sure what you can believe anymore. Not taking sides...just not sure who is telling the truth.

The NFL is considering requiring fans attending games this season to sign liability waivers shielding the teams from COVID-19 lawsuits, sources said. The waiver proposal is likely to be forwarded to clubs by the middle of next week as part of a broad range of league recommended best practices for re-opening stadiums amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is probably something you do electronically, just trying to figure out the operational challenges associated with waivers,” said one source familiar with plans under development by the stadium reopening working group headed by NFL Sr. VP of Security Cathy Lanier. “Just have to work out how best to do that.”


If the NFL can do it, then the Big Ten/U of Minn can do it. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise, but would like to read any such arguments.

The virus is weaking and dying out.
While I will concede, since hospitalizations and deaths are still trending down, it does look like the effects of the virus are weakening due to new treatements and hospitals catching up and having ICU beds for everyone. However, as you said in an earlier post, cases are still rising so it can't really be argued that the virus is "dying out" at all.

By September everyone will be embarrassed by this freakout, don't be a dead-ender.
September is fast approaching, 2 months. I am fairly confident the virus will still be around then, and even if it is far safer to catch, I don't think anyone is going to be embarrassed about being wrong about a pandemic? Most scientists will probably be like "Wow we were wrong, but now we have data to analyze so that we won't be wrong in the future".

Like, don't project "being embarrassed about being too careful" onto everyone, because most people I know don't get embarrassed by that.

The virus is running out of fragile people to infect.

The great thing is that the Infection Mortality Rate is tiny compared to original estimates...and almost nil for the young and healthy.

When they ever get around to publishing random population antibody test, we will know what a clusterf# this was.

I had a restaurant require signing a waiver the other day. I think that is the norm now, but since they haven't issued tickets, maybe they can tie the waiver into the ticket process (i.e. read the online waiver and check the box before we will ship you tickets) I'd hate to see how long it takes to fill a stadium with people signing stuff, plus 20,000 people sharing a pen isn't exactly covid friendly and I don't think they could keep up with trying to clean pens between uses.

Jebus.... considering how getting through the doors at TCF has been... other things like just dealing with crowds and consessions (I mean who would want water?!?!?!) ... I wouldn't put it past someone to think that everyone signing at the door is a good idea....

Quoting from this morning's Sarasota Herald Tribune. "SarasotA Memorial Hospital had a record 50 Covid 19 patients on Tuesday......The hospital also has a record number of Covid -19 patients in the ICU.....
On Wednesday, SMH had 49 Covid patients with 16 in the ICU. The hospitals previous high was 13 patients in the ICU on April 16. There are now two ICU units full of Covid-19 patients."

But what is the age group of the people in the ICU? Age 70+? 65 and above? Is it Teenagers? Babys?

Article didn't say. Since it's Sarasota, I'm sure it skews older. However, the population base didn't change between April and now. Just saying the virus is having a new surge in some locations.
 



FWIW - I was talking to a friend of mine who is a HS football coach. he in turn was talking to someone who is active in the MN State HS Football Coaches association. The contact in the Coaches' association said at this point, he does NOT expect HS football to be played this fall in MN.

I offer that only to show the mindset of people who are making decisions at the state level.

now, I still tend to think we will have college FB this Fall. But if there are fans in the stands - especially to start the season, I will be very surprised.

If there isn’t “regular” school in the fall...there won’t be fall sports.

the current MDH and MDE guidelines would pretty much make bussing impossible for in person regular school...so unless there are huge changes quickly from MDH and MDE there is going to be online or “hybrid” school and no fall sports.

Even if there is "regular" school, high schools don't have the resources to start a regular testing protocol, so even if the kids are not in danger when catching COVID, you run the risk of a large portion of your team all getting sick at once unexpectedly.

If there is no high school season, I wonder if MN set up sort of a High School Combine so that seniors can still try to show what improvements they have made since Junior season.

If there are no high school sports I expect one bedroom apartment rents will go up in Hudson, Superior, Sioux Falls, Mason City.

All the parents who think their kids deserve scholarships won’t let their kid sit out a season. I smell transfers.

If there is a season, there won’t be any regimented testing protocol for schools.
