Sorry if this has been covered, but why did Donnell Kirkwood go along with James Louis punking the Gopher fans about coming here before signing day? I understand James messing with people, especially when he planned on Ohio State all along.....but why would Donnell play along?

Are you positive Kirkwood was mocking us? Maybe Louis told him he was thinking about going to Minny and Kirkwood went with the words of his "friend".

Maybe he was getting played too, or maybe Louis was actually having second thoughts.

You're making some assumptions that may be unwarranted. We don't know that James was messing with us, he may well have been wavering in his committment to Ohio State. Perhaps Kirkwood was trying to persuade James to come here.

Um, I think it is INFINITELY more plausible that Louis told him he was switching and then changed his mind again. It's not Kirkwood's fault that his friend is indecisive and immature.

Louis

Louis WAS coming here.

No idea what changed his mind back at the last minute but the coaches and I'm sure Kirkwood thought he was coming here.

I'm sure someone got to him (in a dead period).

Trying to figure out the thoughts and behaviors of 17-18 year old dudes is a losing game folks. Ask any parent.

Louis posted his thoughts on facebook. Donnell's sister (well, she's a Kirkwood at least) inquired and supported Louis when he said "I'm thinking about Minnesota". Donnell openly said 'I heard good news, I hope it's true'.

In my opinion, Louis hesitated but followed through with his initial verbal. He did visit here afterall, one of only three officials -- and I highly doubt he'd take a shot at his friend for no reason. Don't stir the pot man...

while i think that this is very plausible, you have to remember that these kids are infinitely more PR savvy than us old fogies are. their heroes are chad 'ochocinco' and TO. they know that to make the most money in this game of modern sports media that they need to be a reality star on top of being a great player.

you rarely see tim duncan as the first story on ESPN. today's game is all about hype, and particularly when you are a football player and your face is behind a mask all game, you have to create that hype off the field.

i find it possible that james louis could have been ahead of the game and realized that all these players getting dap from the the sports sites were getting their name out there better than he was. it is possible that he wanted to create a stir and get that name back onto the lips of those who follow recruiting. maybe

I have no idea if Louis was gaming the system. After all the crazy recruiting stuff we've all seen it sure seems possible. I'm confused how this conflicts with my assertion that it is extremely unlikely that Kirkwood was helping him with his PR push. I have a very hard time believing that Kirkwood would risk backlash from the coaches or his soon to be teammates by helping Louis "punk" us.

I'm at work

But Brewster even believed he had Louis locked up right up until signing day. I think Louis even told Brew he would be a Gopher and then he changed his mind

He didn't mock or mess with Gopher fans at all. He just posted something on his Facebook page.

Some pathetic fan, with nothing better to do than stalk high school kids Facebook pages, then decides to make a big fuss over it.

Why do you even come on this forum? Seriously.

You actually contribute something on the basketball forum (which I rarely even visit), but your sole purpose on the football board is to mock and ridicule posters, especially when they talk about recruiting.

We get it. You don't like recruiting. Here's a hint: nobody cares. When you get your own forum, you can moderate it and control all the content.

Until then, shut up and let those of us who actually like talking about recruiting do so.

If you have time to check every recruits facebook page, then i seriously feel bad for you, and possibly a little creeped out. maybe he chose not to come here because of stalkers

I don't see anything "creepy" or "stalking" about looking at a recruit's facebook page. These are statements that people make to the world, why shouldn't people read them? The fact that it is on facebook doesn't matter, it's just one means of communication.

The facts as we know them:
A recruit made a statement that he was considering switching to Minnesota.
It's obvious that this would be of interest to Gopher fans.
He wound up staying with the school he had originally committed to.

That's it. There's no reason to suppose that this was some sort of prank, let alone assume that one of the Gopher recruits was in on the "prank". Given how hostile the comments from OSU fans on his facebook page were, I highly doubt that comments by Gopher fans persuaded him to switch back to OSU.

well i consider facebook as a way to communicate with friends and keep in touch with friends, not stalk random 18 year old kids, if they wanted you to stalk them, they'd do a twitter page

+1 to this.

I don't think that facebook is for "stalking" either. But I don't see how looking at a recruit's facebook page constitutes "stalking". If that's stalking, then we're all stalking just by following recruiting at all.

I went to the Radioshack web page today. Did I "stalk" Radioshack, by reading the information they put out to the world?

So, Twitter, OK; facebook bad. And If I want someone to "stalk" me, it's not stalking.

sorry, stalking may be too harsh, creeping sounds better. Is radioshack an 18 year old kid youve never met before?

No, it doesn't sound any better, at leat not my any honest measure. Radioshack makes communications with the rest of the world. From time to time, people stop and check out what they have to say. It's no different on facebook - no one is eavesdropping on private conversations.

If this is "stalking" or "creeping" than anyone who pays attention to recruiting is "stalking" and "creeping". If a recruit starts talking about changing committments, people are going to pay attention. Does it somehow matter by what means these communications are made?

By all means, we should delete all threads about recruiting to avoid stalking or creeping.

+1. Facebook is a vehicle for the dissemination of information. Nothing more, nothing less. If you don't want the rest of the world to see your posts, then you restrict your profile as private and only give your friends access to it. I fail to see how reading information that someone wants you to read could be considered either stalking or creeping.

If you put the pieces together there is a more plausible story here than James Louis and Donnell Kirkwood conspired to punk Minnesota fans.

No doubt Louis was threatening to attend Minnesota as a ploy to get more money from THE Ohio State University. We can only assume that it worked.

" If you put the pieces together there is a more plausible story here than James Louis and Donnell Kirkwood conspired to punk Minnesota fans.'

Most of the non-Minesota or tOSU sites think it was the Buckeyes who were being punked. Kirkwood and Brewster too. I'm pretty sure that Louis's training camp won't be real pleasant.

And yet there are still other possibilities, like, nobody got punked.
