It’s worth noting Fleck’s historically excelled with his evaluations. It’s a big reason why Western Michigan went from 1-11 in his first year to 13-1 three seasons later. Bateman, who finished as a four-star prospect, is an example of a strong early evaluation. He’s not the only one.
Of the 23 high school members of Minnesota’s 37th-ranked 2018 class, 16 of them ranked higher in the 247Sports Composite at the end of the cycle than they did when they committed to the Gophers. Part of that is because Minnesota adds the large majority of its commitments prior to a players’ senior year. But it’s also a testament to Minnesota’s early evaluations that their targets continue to rise into their senior seasons.
