curious. since the coach kicked him out, would the ncaa still make him sit a year?
I'll give Freddie the benefit of the doubt on the timing. Entirely possible he doesn't know the finals schedule of his players. Just looks like bad form on other fronts, though.
Wow. Heiman is an in state Nebraska kid. What was the local reaction?
Wow. Pretty cold and hard to defend.
Through the years, there has been a ton of conversation on Diedhiou on Gopherhole. Pitino wanted to fill out his roster and took a risk with Gaston. It obviously didn't work out, and even knowing that after a couple of years, Pitino did not push him out the door.
I will say this, if a coach asks a player to leave then that player should be allowed to go to any school they want.
.....I thought this kid looked pretty good in spot duty as a frosh. At the best, this is not a good P.R. start for dear Freddy. As worst he made a bad basketball decision too.
Yeah...If a kid doesn't fit your system, there are ways to encourage him to look elsewhere without pulling this.
Oh, C'mon now. Pitino isn't an angel here. It was almost a forgone conclusion that Buggs, Gilbert, and Washington would leave the program based on Pitino's conspicuously differential treatment of them. Gaston may have been a different story given that he was an international student and may have had to leave the country if he lost a scholarship.
There is a huge difference between not playing bad players and asking a kid to leave the program and give up his scholarship. If Pitino asked them to leave, I would have a problem with it. Pitino benching them, nope, that's called coaching.
Not all guys put out a public notice that the coach told them to go, either. I think the vast majority of "transfers" are amicable, with the player and coach realizing it isn't working and isn't likely to get better. We have heard arguments for years that players should be able to come and go with limited hardship. It's happening with grad transfers and easier waivers. Getting forced out is the other side of the same coin.

What if hoiberg came here and told Jarvis to kick rocks?
The fact that Heiman told a reporter about it probably means he wasn’t pleased about being forced out. I don’t blame him. It’s one thing to have the “here’s what your role would likely be” conversation. It’s another to flat out tell a kid he has to leave, as appears to be the case here.
A coach technically can't force a kid to leave. B1G scholarships are guaranteed for four years. The most a coach can do is say "You are going to be on the scout team and there is no chance I'm going to play you in a real game. You should transfer." That's about as bluntly as a coach could put it.
The only way a scholarship can actually be pulled is if the student-athlete becomes ineligible, commits fraud or misconduct, or leaves the team. This idea of having an athletic scholarship pulled for no reason doesn't exist anymore in B1G schools.
Some people might not like it, but if a coach has already made up their mind about a kid it's only fair to tell them. The sooner the kid knows the more time they have to find another school. I would have no problem with Pitino doing the same. I'd bet most D1 coaches have done something similar at some point in their career. It only becomes a problem (and potentially hurts in recruiting and morale) if the same coach is doing it all the time.
It's Nebraska. You bet he'll have to sit. UNC, Puke, etc. No, go ahead and play right away.
Good points above about pushing out a local kid with a pretty depleted roster. I'll give Freddie the benefit of the doubt on the timing. Entirely possible he doesn't know the finals schedule of his players. Just looks like bad form on other fronts, though.
(1) The only thing that I'm aware of that could arguably be considered differential in the treatment of these three players is that they didn't play much (except Buggs);
(2) There was nothing conspicuous about that treatment for Gilbert and Washington, they weren't very good.

Isn't this approach called "Creaning"?
It got named after Crean, because he did it too much. Which is why I said it can be a problem if the same coach does it all the time. Though Crean has the 10th ranked recruiting class in the country at Georgia this year so maybe not a huge problem.
It was going on long before Crean started it, and there are very few D1 coaches who could honestly say they've never done anything like it.
